Recently noticed a slipping feeling as the accelerator pedal is depressed to increase speed/revs in a higher gear. A manual model, clutch is okay in engaging gear and pulling away. Just has this action when you want to put your foot down to increase speed or overtake. Any ideas whether it is mechanical or a diagnostic/sensor problem. Nothing lit on dash. Read more

The more you let it slip the quicker it will wear. If you drive it gently so it doesn't slip it could last some time.

Hope someone can help me here with some info, I have poor cold running for the first few minutes of driving. Then once warm car runs fine. Car starts first time and does not stall. Idle is fine no hunting etc...

I unplugged what I thought was the coolant temp sensor on the side of the engine gearbox side, car started fine etc still had problem as mentioned above. All this seemed to do was stop the temp gauge on the dash working.

Are there 2 sensors one for the gauge on the dash and one for the ecu?? Or does this one sensor do both jobs.???

Thanks phil Read more

Hi,

I have an intermittent problem with locking or unlocking the rear offside door on a Mondeo 1999. In general, when the weather is warm/dry it works but when it is cold/damp the lock is not responsive. I have just also noticed that 1 press of the remote, which should release the driver's door and boot only, also releases the o/s/r door. I suspect I have some corrosion on a connector somewhere which is hydroscopic causing loss of power to the lock. The trouble is, I don't know where to start looking. Does anyone have any suggestions, please?... Read more

Heat shield cracked on my old Mondeo which gave it a tinny screeching noise. I parked with the front wheels on the pavement to make sort of a gap to slide under, got some big scissors and a stanley knife and cut the whole thing off.

Job done.

13 yr old BMW E39 535i being laid to rest for a couple of years until she's a classic (hasn't even done 100K, never failed an MOT can't bear to part with it for the kind of valuations I'm getting (£500-1000!))

I will be using a MkIV Golf (10 yr old) in the meantime as it's a bit cheaper to run about it on a daily basis and my wife's just got a 7 year old Volvo V40 (tells me the Golf was too small but it will do me!!)... Read more

If there is No Tax and or No Insurance on BMW SOPRN it pdq - save hassle for the future.

Whilst I can see you are trying to protect the mechanical condition until such time it comes back on the road, that will only apply for the day of the MOT. Seek advice here and there as to protective measures you should be taking to preserve the old girl.

We are in the process of selling our b6 audi avant for something bigger. 2 young children mean car seats, buggie's and the kitchen sink normally come on every journey. We need something bigger.

We do approx 12k per year, mostly A roads, our budget is a maximum of 4k. The VW transporter would ideal but there out of our budget, perhaps a TDI MPV? Any suggestions or advice? Read more

I'd second the FRV. We got one late last year when number arrived. So we drive about in it weekly with a full load. The benefit for us with a new born and a 2.5 year old who still occassionaly wants to cadge a lift in the double buggy is that you can fit an enormous amount i.e a full size Phil and Teds buggy in the boot. Funnily enough ours has just returned from a round trip to Devon with no problems.

Now look here you chaps. Over the past week or so I've been looking at second hand cars in the £6000 to £9000 bracket at franchises and well established dealers. When I most politely address the matter of warranty, they all dismiss what we all read in the Telegraph every Saturday, namely that they are legally obliged to guarantee their vehicles for 6 months after the sale. One today in Southport said it was "a load of rubbish" and that they warranted their cars for a month, or "mumf" as he put it. But they might be able to throw in another three months. Maybe. It's more or less the same story everywhere. Everywhere I've been anyway. What in tarnation is going on here? Are they ignorant, lying, or, heaven forbid, actually right?

Now then, it seems I have failed to discern the niceties of the issue.

The dealer is at liberty to offer whatever WARRANTY he wants. This will vary in cover and length, but I think the minimum is a month....

Back when I had my 2005 S80 with proper Volvo seats (and zero Ford parts AFAIK), I had a loan of a 2008 new S80 with all the Ford input that goes with it.

My impressions were that the seats were different from the older Volvo, still supportive but less squidgy- more Germanic I suppose. Mrs OB liked them better than the old S80. FWIW overall interior quality was just as good on the whole (and less old fashioned), but there were places were the new car felt cheaper, I was particularly surprised by the very tinny sound when closing the boot of the new S80 compared to the made of granite thud of the old car. Not that that really matters of course......

My brother in law had a Jazz from new. It is now a 55 plate with low mileage, and has had a gearbox rebuild under warranty, and now has another failed bearing in the gearbox at 30K miles. So much for invincible Honda engineering !
