BMW 535i - SORN,MOTs and all that gubbins - Chris on the road

13 yr old BMW E39 535i being laid to rest for a couple of years until she's a classic (hasn't even done 100K, never failed an MOT can't bear to part with it for the kind of valuations I'm getting (£500-1000!))

I will be using a MkIV Golf (10 yr old) in the meantime as it's a bit cheaper to run about it on a daily basis and my wife's just got a 7 year old Volvo V40 (tells me the Golf was too small but it will do me!!)

Question is: shall I renew the MOT on the BMW? (due in 1 month) Or should I do a SORN (statutory off-road notification)? I don't want the expense of insurance for the BMW but I wonder if I am storing up trouble for whenever I take her back out on the road in a couple of years? (when she will have neither tax nor MOT)

Is letting both the MOT and the tax lapse a good idea or should I keep the MOT going?

I can't think of any reason for getting a new MOT if you are planning to take the car off the road for a few years.

If there is No Tax and or No Insurance on BMW SOPRN it pdq - save hassle for the future.

Whilst I can see you are trying to protect the mechanical condition until such time it comes back on the road, that will only apply for the day of the MOT. Seek advice here and there as to protective measures you should be taking to preserve the old girl.
