Gantry signs - greenhey

I was on the M25 on Thursday afternoon when a real cloudburst occurred just as I approached the M$ junction clockwise.

This is at the best of times, a tricky place as it becomes something like 6 lanes.Inevitably, despite several miles of signs, people try to cross 3 or 4 lanes in a hurry when they realise the M4 is where they need to go.

As ever, though, large numbers of drivers reacted to the conditions and the spray by using totally indequate parking lights or no lights at all to make themselves visible.

It was scary. I carried on up to the M40 junction and could see a gantry sign illuminated.Surely, I thought, it would remind people of their legal responsibility to use headlights in these conditions?

No- "remember to take your litter home with you"

My favourite is the one on the M6, approaching the M61, that reminds me to 'Take Care Whilst Towing'. 'Don't hog the middle lane' is a good one as well. I once saw one that just had 'error...........' on it. I guess it was advice to me to avoid the drive to Manchester.

There's probably a motoring law specialist somewhere who's found a legal loophole whereby instructions on road signs on gantries that span the carriagway, and supported on both sides of the carriageway, are not legally enforcible!!!

I didn't think they were enforceable. With speed limits I think the only signs that have legal force are those with a red ring surrounding the figure.

Someone correct me if that's out of date.

The Matrix signs are incorrect and even dangerously misleading about 85% of the time in my experience. They are largely pointless.

That's my experience too. They warn of queing where there is none, and suggest a lower speed limit with no apparent reason. The only warnings which seem to be reliable are the workforce-on-the-road noticess.

Yes!! I used to see that every day on the way to work! It actually created queues because people would slow down as the matrix sign suggested.
