Hi. Can anyone out here give me some help or advice. I think I may have accidently reset my service indicator when I was trying to get it to just disaply next service due. The indicator (using the spanner button) now says next service due 9,400 miles or 744 days. (It did come up with "service now" in red but no longer shows this message as I may have reset it.) The last service was done at 71,000 in November 2010. The car has now done 81,500. I guess I need to take it for a service. if you say yes, do I need to go for a time/distance service or long life service? I am confused. Thanks. Read more

We bought a polo from friends for £500 who said it was an insurance write off. To get log book i had to take it for VIC. It has passed 2 MOTs in our ownership but when we came to sell it on (again to friends for teenage learn to drive) their insurance company refused to insure it saying it was category B. I have checked on idata and it is listed as cat B, but per dvla it is c. My understanding is we shouldnt drive this vehicle. It now worth scrap £150 v sale to friends of £650 ie loss £500 - do we have any redress? Appreciate sale of goods doesnt apply to private sale - but the the seller had been advised it was category B by third party insurers and sold it as road going... Would small claims work? criminal action...

thanks - ps "friend" who sold it is a grumpy lawyer.... Read more

Any legal fees you incur would exceed the value of the Polo - don't go there. The only possibility I can think of is for the potential buyer to try another insurance company or consult a broker.

Do we need to buy European breakdown insurance for our trip to France? Some cover is available from Mercedes. My husband thinks this is enough but I'm not so sure.

Hi all,

I've just looked at a 2006 Honda Civic that I really like and want to buy. Having done an HPI check on it, I got the dreaded "discrepancy" which looks like the below:

On numerous occasions I have had punctures, all in different places but all in locations where I am sure there is CCTV, not that this would help I think. I think you can only view yourself in video footage and everyone else is blurred out due to privacy etc.

I suspect someone had intentionally placed glass in front of, behind and either side of all four tyres because the punctures happened within seconds of the car moving.... Read more

I can't remember ever getting a puncture from glass. Nails and screws, yes and even thorns on pushbike tyres.

Are you sure someone isn't just letting your tyres down?

Reading in the papers today about Rowan Atkinson's unfortunate prang with a tree in his McLaren F1, it was reported in the Daily Mail (so it must be correct) that the makers recommend a service every 6000 miles and the cost for this is £30,000 each time.

Can this be true?... Read more

Tracey Emin's soiled bed has also been described as 'art'...

It's just occured to me that instead of paying McLaren £30,000 to re-attach nanolayers of gold foil after 6000 miles, you could buy a genuine piece of innovative British design-a brand new Ariel Atom. It accelerates and stops quicker than the McLaren to boot....

Hello. I have just bought an 06-plate VW Passat. I need your kind help (i) how do I get the next service to display? I have a "spanner button" but nothing happens when it is pressed. What am I doing wrong? (ii) I also have a large mutli-functional display screen on the dashboard which shows the warning lamps in the upper part and miles left in the fuel tank and temperature etc in the lower part (when the ignition is on/engine off in Position 2). However, following the manual's instructions, I have tried using the extra buttons on the wiper and rocker switch to bring up the menu and settings for things like winter tyres, next service, coming/leave home functions, etc in the upper display. However, nothing happens. Please help! (iii) do I have front fog lights on my car. I have the symbol indicated on the round lights dial (showing all external lights and rear fog lights) but i cannot push the dial to the front fog symbol without breaking the dial. Maybe I don't have front fog lights but why have the symbol on the dial? Thank you. Read more

Just read a letter in HJ motoring section of the Daily Telegraph. It seems someone has just become aware of the proposed new legislation, which will be used to persecute and fleece ordinary motorists, whether guilty or not.

I refer, of course, to the Protection of Freedoms Bill. Section 2:Clause 56. Lobbied for, by that great altruistic organisation, the British Parking Association or BPA for short. I can think of some appropriate words to fit the acronym BPA. I have responded to that letter with my letter to HJ, in which I request some technical assistance to organise a campaign to oppose this vile piece of legislation. I have written to my MP, to Phillip Hammond Minister for Transport and many other people in government and urge all motorists to do likewise.... Read more

I understand that this bill will get a reading in parliament later this month so there is little time for action.

I have signed the on-line petition, but think that an email to my MP would have more effect....
