I was involved in an accident on July 26th. A Range Rover let me into a queue of traffic and then hit my car from behind.

We both stopped and exchanged details, but he said that someone had hit him from behind and pushed him into the back of me. He made no attempt to find this other driver and the traffic was moving very slowly because of diverted traffic from the M5. I was very shaken and concerned as we were leaving the next day at 10am to go away for my Husbands 40th Birthday celebrations, by neithr myself or my children were badly hurt. The passenger side front bupmer of his car had collided with the rear drivers side of my car, suggesting he was turning the wheel to the right when he hit me.... Read more

Hi Bonzo

Thanks for your reply. However, when I tried to call my credit card provider, I struggled to explain my circumstances. I could claim if the exhaust had been damaged during the accident, but as the car has been written offand the exhaust was usable, they will not budge. Unfortunately English was not the first language of the call center operative I spoke to, so I may go into my bank and try there....

when the engine is turned on for a few seconds it makes a knocking sound after that the car runs without any trouble. thank you Read more

Are you sure it is from the engine. The other possibility is the dual mass flywheel has bust a spring. Does it do it every time you start it even when hot/warm. Regards Peter

Having passed a year with the car I thought I'd scribble my comments for what they are worth.

Firstly I bought it because I've always liked something different, I think its gorgeous, and trail to Aberdeen most weekends: a round trip of circa 350mls. Its perfect for this: refined, quiet, very comfortable but not quite as frugal as my Golf 140 TDi : in real terms 46/47 mpg and I've always got good mpg from my cars due to my driving style i.e. relaxed with the odd burst of tomfoolery. ... The gearstick in my Nissan Primera p12 seems slight sloopy and does not return to the centre. Can anyone advise me how to fix this? It looks like it has to be access from below the car to get access to the linkage. When I was under the car I shook the gear linkage and a slight rattling noise came from the gear stick linkage area. It looks like a heatshield may be in the way and need removed. Anyone any advice on this? Thanks Read more

Please see my other post in the Back Room where I was basically having a whinge. Well I am afraid it goes on.

The incident took place on the 15 July. Yesterday 03 08 2011 my car (which I had retrieved from repair centre - see other post if it's not too boring) was finally inspected by an "independent" engineer and I have no doubt that the end result will be a Cat D total loss in their own sweet time.... Hi All,

I'm new here and this is my first car, so please treat me as a kid compare to all your knowledge.

Car Details : Toyota Avensis D4D Saloon, T3X Silver

Recently by mistake i fulled my tank with Super Diesel, which according to pump owenr should give better engine performance, for couple of days i enjoyed less noice and smooth engine performance

But...now when even i stop at traffic light the engine dont show much power even if i push the gas pad fully to the floor. after around 3 seconds car shows lot power and suddenly get speed in first gear, if i dont wait for this sudden power and get in 2nd gear as car moves slowly, in around 30 seconds time i get jerks then i have to get in 3rd gear to smooth run again.

yesterday after around 5 miles run i had to stop at trafic light at round about and then when i released cluths and gave gas it stalled and people behind me started blowing horns, i had to start hazard lights as when i started the engine back and tried to run the car in first gear it stlled again and again for almost 4 times, i gave a minute and then turned the engine on again and it slowly picked up the speed. it happend again in 20 mins time on another trafic light.

on the other note might be related might not, my car trip computer shows between 35 to 45 mpg average but in reality i dont get this milage.

When i bought this car the seller told me that clutch is a bit hard and told me that he was runinnng same hard clutch for 2 years, when i got it serviced spent £250 the mechanic told me that clutch seems good and might work for anotther 6 months or so.

So now i'm not sure is this a Super Diesel issue or clutch or engine. Car dont really go above 45miles speed even in 5th gear.

please help.

Thanks in advance

Hi All.

I'm considering buying an Economy Tuning Chip Box for my VW Crafter, can you tell me if all the claims are true? More power, 15-20% on fuel economy & can they do any damage to the engine?... Read more

unthrottled

It's a bog standard fuel dump. It modifies the signal from the ECU to the injectors. So if the ECU requests, say, 50mg/stroke of diesel, the tuning box will increase it to 60mg.

You'll get an apparent gain in fuel economy on the trip computer because the engine is injecting more fuel than it thinks it is. But a brim to brim measurement should reveal no change. Increasing fuelling without modifying the turbo map will increase EGTs and might cause smoking. The increase in power and torque is genuine-but it isn't free!...

clutch, starter, alternator, belt tensioner, electrical sensors will all suffer water ingress and slow corrosion. I would advise against.

No doubt someone will be along in a min to say it will be fine !

Am wanting to buy a used estate car for around £1,800. I'm quite drawn to the Rover 75 (I'd only go for the diesel version) but am just a little worried that any future repair costs could be so much more than other makes/models given that Rover are defunct. Anyone know whether this is indeed the case? Many thanks! Read more

I think the Focus is an estate-light when you can get a bigger, better looking Mondeo for around the same money. The Peugeot 406 HDi i was going to suggest, a well maintained one with the 2.0 HDi engine is a very strong car and alot of taxi drivers near me still use them with 250k on them with no problems, although most of them will be high mileage now and how much longer they've got left is uncertain. The Volvo V40 isnt ideal and for that money V70's will be the older less economical models.

Check out the VW Passat 1.9 TDi Estate also, few kicking about on AT for under 2k
