I'm looking to buy a used car for around £1,500 and have just started looking around at what's out there... Today I saw a very decent seeming Mondeo 2..0TDCi 130bhp (2001).
Just one problem... when the seller revved it I noticed some (not a huge amount) black smoke coming from exhaust. This occurred when first starting from cold and then later to the same degree once warm. No smell of deisel btw. This particular car has done 110k and has fsh. It's generally in great condition and drives nicely...... Read more
On the 4th of July a lorry drove into the side of my car causing me to spin and be pushed sideways up the road by him. Now this was 100% his fault; two lanes were merging into one (I was on the inside lane) and the lorry driver just tried to push in and caught the side of the car (by the petrol cap so I was very visible to him).
As I only have 3rd party fire and theft I have been claiming through AI claims and its taking ages for my cheque to arrive, the car has been inspected and written off. I've accepted the offer so I'm just waiting for his insurance to pay out; it seems to be dragging on now and even AI claims said that Aviva would have usually paid out by now, so i'm starting to worry,... The update is now that the witness is refusing to make a statement for either party (despite initially telling AI claims that it was the third party that was at fault) he says he's sick of being bombarded by insurance companies and won't be filling out any accident forms. So thats that!
So now its just my word against the lorry drivers AI claims said that they are still confident that I am not at fault and I should be able to claim the full amount of my car due to the photographic evidence I provided and the fact he hasn't claimed off my insurance (its been two months now)...
Even when sitting 'bolt upright' , which my wife finds difficult to do because of curvature of the spine caused by lifting heavy patients long before lifting aids were introduced, there is a gap of several inches between her head and the head restraint.
Is there an accessory on the market which could be fitted to the front of the head restraint so as to fill the gap and provide her with the support which she would need in the event of a crash so as to avoid whiplash injury? Read more
Most people in this country own and drive cars or other vehicles. And yet the BBC doesn't have a proper motoring programme. Many years ago there used to be such a programme, it was called Top Gear. It's true there is still a programme called 'Top Gear' now, but I think that's something different, a sort of re-make of Last of the Summer Wine for a target audience of 11 year-old boys, from what I've seen of it. Top Gear doesnt try to bear relevance to your motoring needs. And you say we need a program which informs us about these things, nobody would watch it. Why is this message not getting through? It wouldnt get enough viewers or interest for the BBC to bother doing it. Video reviews on official car testing websites is about as close as you'll get.
Been to peugeot today they want to put a particle filter in, new additive pump all for £900 plus, there must be a cheaper way? any ideas Read more
Beware lots of MOT changes coming our way next year.
I live in France and my car is registered here. I was stopped on a motorway on 29th May 2011 and asked for my details. I received two notices which I signed as being the driver even though I stated that the speeding offences were on the 18th March and I could not be sure I was the driver. The GM police replied that it was fair of them to issue the notices as they couldnt find who owned the car as it was not registered in GB and they had used due deligence. They have sent me two Conditional Offers which I thought I might as well pay as to challange would probably cost me more. Unfortunately they wanted me to send my licence back to the UK. I said that would not be possible as it is a legal requirement in France to have your licenec with you at all times and police over here do spot checks with spot fines if you don,t have your licence with you. The GM police are now saying because I can't comply with the Conditional Offer notices they are forwarding to the prosecutions department for the consideration of having them dealt with by way of a summons.
Is it likely that I will be summoned? This seems terribly unfair as I offered to pay the fines. Can anyone help?

I would suspect by now the die has been cast and at this very moment there is a file lying at CPS with a view to the issue of a summons against you....
A month ago starting on the motorway the car started to shudder with the same sendsantion of going over some rumble strips. Took the car back to SAAB( under warranty, purchase only in March) and was told that the "regen" was not responding on manual. Told to carry on as normal but arranged for a check up. Found that 2 of the "glow plugs"(?) were defective so they replace the complete set of 4. No problems for 2 weeks driving only locally. Last Saturday drove up to London (150 miles) at 70 mph and eventually caught in the jam on the M25. Whilst costing at 40 mph the car started to shudder so violently that I was tempted to stop but carried on gingerly. No problem since after having come back again 150 miles at 70 mph. Is the shuddering normal or is something else to look at. I have owned SAABs for the past 20 years and this has never happend before. I am concerned that something may happen. I noticed obviously a loss of power, icreased the speed but returnind down it started again. No smell of burning at all.
Any advice or suggestion.... Read more
Moved to Technical.
Im replacing pads/discs and fluid soon and heard a few people mention dot 5.1 would give a firmer pedal feel.
I was wondering if its worth chaning from dot 4.1? If so can I just bleed the brakes as normal and top up with 5.1?... Read more

When this additional light is connected up the brake and tail/index lamp are wired in parallel with the existing wiring....
Have you ever noticed that most of the chassis dynos employed by aftermarket companies usually give a baseline higher than quoted stock?! Either evereyone has a better than average car or (more likely) the dyno is incorrectly calibrated or drivetrain losses are over estimated to give a flattering figure.
It's still a slobs' approaach. Ford diesels were never at the forefront of the pack in terms of economy or refinement. Turning the fuelling up past the smoke point is considered antisocial, DPF or not.
