My 7 year old car was MOTd in March 2011 and passed for 12 months. Last week I suffered brake failure due to corroded brake pipes. BMW have replaced the pipes at a cost of £1000. How can brake pipes become unserviceable within 3 months?.....or has the MOT been carried out by someone who is incompetent.?. Should I report the MOT station to VOSA?. Read more

Hi there,

I had an accident in my Punto yesterday which I only bought on Sunday so not the best start! I need a replacement headlight for the drivers side and I'm not sure if the car is Mark 2 or Mark 3. The car was registered in September 2003 and is the new shape. If you lift the bonett the Punto logo stays attached to it but the grid stays attatched to the bumper. I'm almost certain it's Mark 3 but don't want to get caught out buying the wrong lights. I'd really appreciate your help : )... Read more

Best thing to do is take a quick look at the Wikipedia entry. It shouldn't be too much of a problem in any case as the headlights of the MK2 are quite different from the MK2b.

If you're buying a new one from FIAT, then they'll order it from your chassis number, which should get you the correct one....

Hiya,

Have just replaced the turbo on my 1 series 120d, while there the tech found a mucky caramel coloured film on top of the coolant, he advised he has not seen this type of thing before, there was nothing in the oil and the engine isn't over heating so I am desperately hoping that it isn't the head gasket!

I have read on the web that if you mix coolant types this can happen?

Can anyone help?

Thank you

Why did the turbo fail? The turbo is water cooled-if it failed, oil could have mixed with the coolant. Alternatively, your oil cooler might have sprung a leak allowing water and oil to mix.

My son has a scruffy 10 year old 1.6 Zafira, its done 100k miles with him having done 60k of them. It's been serviced on an irregular basis and always as cheaply as possible. He's had to replace discs and pads, back box and a battery but nothing major has gone wrong in 7 years. I've driven it and the engine is surprisingly smooth and has enough poke to get about quite nicely. He gets high 30s on a run. If it departs this planet tomorrow he's had his money's worth.

I helped my dad change the front brake pads on his Scenic and after we had finished, we tested it and found the brake pedal had become spongey. We completely bled the system so it now has nothing but fresh oil in it and it is still spongey. The old fluid had no air bubbles in it. We've gone through the checks in the Haynes manual and worked out it's not the vacuum servo. Can anyone help?

It's not at all uncommon for the brakes to feel soft initially after changing brake pads. Assuming that you have no obvious serious problems that you're not mentioning I would take the car for a drive making good use of the brakes along the way. You probably won't have to go too far before you see a noticable improvement.

Brake linings no longer contain asbestos which had excellent frictional properties due to the health risks, but unfortunately this is also why pads and discs don't last as long as they used to.

Around 10 months ago my van started blowing out black smoke and running flat out whilst on a journey.

I managed to bring the van to a halt as was towed to our local citroen garage where i was informed the engine had run on its own oil due to oil overfill and that had blown the pistons.... Read more

I have read the terms they are saying that the crankshaft is not covered by the repairs however i believe if the repair to the pistons was not carried out properly this can cause damage to the crank, also the van is only a 56 plate with low mileage what is the chances of the crank going on its own without this work being carried out.
