I owned an Alhambra for 4 years and it was a great motor. Def go for the 1.9 PD and check that the aircon works. Ask plenty of questions about the aircon, it can be prone to leaks that are expensive to fix. Some leaks need the dash to be removed which is nearly two days labour on its own. Other problem for me was the secondary heater but that was an easy glow plug fix.

Hi, been away for three months left my car with my brother now the car wont start. it was turning over before he changed the battery i think he may have connected the terminals the wrong way round. i have checked the fuses on top of the battery all good and also the ones in the fuse box. have i missed any? also could this be an alarm problem as the solinoid will not even click. all the lights on dash board light up and the heater relay clicks any ideas? If the battery had been connected the wrong way round it would likely have done considerable damage to the electrics, the fact that no fuses have blown and some of the electrics work would indicate otherwise. It sounds as though either there is no voltage reaching the starter solonoid or its faulty. Try connecting a length of wire from the battery + to the small terminal on the starter, solonoid if it then operates you probably have an alarm or ingnition switch problem.

Personally I wouldn't pay £20,000+ for a car which didn't give me anywhere to put my left foot when off the clutch.

It mightn't sound important, but it is if you're going to do long trips in it, which presumably you are or you wouldn't be going for a diesel.

The ommission symbol has come on twice in the last 4 or 5 weeks when starting the engine ''bit lumpy not running properly'' but dissapeared on re-starting, should I take it to a vw garage, would the problem show up on their computer ? Car seems to be running fine though my miles to the gallon have dropped from about 38 to 34 in the last 3 months.

I would appreciate any avice you can give me.... Read more

Most modern cars occasionally show the orange engine management / emissions light. The extreme weather conditions can be a cause, particularly when a cold spell ends and condensation ends up where it shouldn't, a little rough idling is quite common on start up. If you have only had the orange light (NOT red) and the light doesn't reappear when restarting then you don't need a dealer visit in my opinion. Keep an eye on the issue and see if it happens after some particular sequence of events (several days without use, drop in temperature, thaw after a cold spell....) which could help future diagnosis.

Could be a few things such as a dirty or blocked diesel or air filter, However........

If you've checked the obvious then I would suspect the SCV (Suction Control Valve) which is attached to the diesel pump by two small allen screws. The symptoms range from cutting out, to poor starting, to rough idling, etc. All these are classic symptoms on the 2.0ltr diesel....

I was sitting in driver's seat of my car, engine switched off, in private service yard behind shops where I work, when Transit reversed into my nearside front door. (Nearly £1000 damage, and £200 excess)

Transit driver showed me his insurance documents, and I noted his number plate, Policy numbers, private address, and insurance agent's details.... Read more

The company who issued your "legal protection cover" will probably not be interested in this because there is little margin without an injury and/or a credit hire.

Your claim is directly against the third party insurer. If you want me to deal with it, get your repairs authorised and recover your excess I can do so with my costs covered by the other party. Send me contact details including a phone number to asklucy@honestjohn.co.uk

Recently bought the above car and have discovered a problem with the front wipers. When you turn them on, you cannot turn them off again with out turning off the engine/ignition. if you leave them switched to the off position they will eventually come to a stop in 5 or maybe 10 minutes.

I thought at first it was the switch was the problem, but I changed that and it made no difference.... Read more

Hi Mark, did you have any luck fixing the wipers? (My Tino 1.8s 2003 has just started having exactly the same problem!)

The broker is pushing you to their preferred "accident manager" to make sure they make as much money out of you as possible. They will be trying to secure a commission out of a credit hire, possibly for a credit repair (with a bung from the garage) and a claim for any injury. In a non-fault case your accident could be worth around £1200 in referral fees to your broker.

In this case however your claim is not against the underwriter or indeed your insurer but potentially against the insurer of the third party (if you went to direct to your insurer they would be seeking the "referral fee" for using their "accident manager" - in my experience accident m,anagers working for brokers tend to be better than those working for insurers as the broker wishes to ensure their client receives a quality service....

Hello everybody,

I have a question? I bought a car in copart auction. It's categody D but doesn't have V5? I found some information that i should send V62 to DLVA to get V5. But on the form i see that i should give them only UK adress and this is a big problem for me because i'm not living in UK. Maybe i should just ignore and give them my home adress (in Lithuania) . Do you know if they are sending V5 abroad? Read more
