Hi, I was wondering what the circuit board on the side of the throttle body actually does? I recently had the problem of loss of power after the engine had warmed (roughly 10min from cold start). When the temperature gauge reached roughly 1/3 of the full scale, upon acceleration the engine would be starved of fuel and would jerk violently. The engine would idle roughly but the fault occurred mainly when the accelerator was pressed. I solved the issue by resoldering all the joints on the throttle body circuit board and now I'm curious as to what the circuit actually does?? Read more

Cheers, thanks for the info.

Incorrect fuelling could be eliminated by changing the cross section design of the pump nozzle and fuel tank filler pipe. For petrol the nozzle and filler pipe could continue to be round, for diesel the filler pump nozzle and filler pipe should be square section. With the correct dimensions it's possible to ensure that only the petrol pump nozzle would fit the petrol filler and only the diesel nozzle would fit the diesel filler. Read more

Hi i drive for Royal Mail, have noticed in last 6months or so that at least 70% of all drivers (from HGV to cars) do not bother to indicat, does not matter if they are changing lanes on motorway, driving round or leaving a roundabout etc, my fav is when im driving along a main road in a town and the car in front puts its brakes on stops then turns right into a side street!! If you are a driver who does not use your indicators is it cause you are thick or bone lazy!! Read more

I'm in the market for a new Astravan Sportive. Pentagon Vauxhall have got some in stock in the spec I want, pre-reg'd with delivery miles for £12495. Now I've not bought new before but I've read plenty of stories where people have relatively easily knocked off large amounts of cash. Spoke to the dealer today to ask what their "best" price was and apparently the "best" they can do for me is to include 1 year tax.... and that's it, as they claim the price is already heavily reduced from the list price, which is apparently RRP £17492 according to their site (for the base model).

I'll be paying cash for it with no finance deal or PX but I've got to be honest I am just slightly annoyed that I'm essentially being given the choice to pay the screen price or do one, especially considering it's January which is traditionally a slow sales month.... Read more

Am i missing something here? The OP has said that the price(£12,495) is the cheapest he can get.

And yet he wants to try to knock some money off?...

I've a July 2001 model, the first ones. The outer CV joints need replacing. However, all aftermarket parts have an OD which greater than those currently fitted (the originals). The new ones also have an ABS ring on them. My car doesn't have ABS.

Main dealers have been 100 pct unhelpful in telling me if the original models were fitted with ABS as standard and, what the OD of current OEM cv joints are. THey won't actually supply these, only the complete drive shaft.

I ask if there is any info out there and, would there be a problem in fitting the new, larger OD joints to my car? Read more

Why not ask Top Gear, they had a Liana which undoubtedly had tons of repair work such as this done on it !!

I enjoy reading HJ's reviews of cars which are comprehensive. I've been thinking of buying a diesel although my annual mileage does not justify it but i enjoy the power delivery. However I am put off by the problems logged with DPF, DMF, blown turbos, injector issues etc. and going for the prestige German marques or Japanese does not make for any better reading! Is it the case that many people have relatively little problems and those who do make a song and dance about it? Indeed even many petrol cars seem to have issues! I must say I have thought about going for a particular vehicle (not brand new and therefore out of manufacturer's warranty) and have decided against it based on HJ's reviews! Read more

From the experience of people I know, I would say that there are more failures in recent turbo cars where they have extracted far more hp than they used to. For example, the current BMW 320d is as powerful than the 330d from a few (7-8) years ago. While the old 330d could often manage 400,000km, the newer 320d will quite often blow a turbo in half that.

Company drivers don't mind as they dispose of the car by 100,000km and they benefit from low CO2/km figures and low tax, but private buyers who keep cars longer may find it an expensive choice....

Hi all

My once beloved 306 is now becoming the bane of my life. I drove the 30 mile commute today, in torrential rain for most of it, and my wipers worked fine. After stopping at a garage and setting on my way again, they started operating VERY slowly, and still were when I left the car.... Read more
