The father-in-law had an issue with the revs rising on his Auris on Wednesday this week although it wasnt accelerating. At first it sounded like a sticking accelerator (popular Toyota issue!), but at the same time the brake pedal went solid and there was a strong 'clutchy' smell. All this happened very quickly and took him a bit by surprise. Does anyone have any experience of similar events or ideas/suggestions as to the problem. He's 80, had the car 3 months and in a worried state about it. The cars 3 years old and bought from a dealer. Read more

Hi ,
I'm after some advice , someone has stole the corner of my roof trim from my mini cooper . After visiting a garage and asking for advice they told me to contact my BMW /Mini dealership. i have done this anbd they have advised me I will need a complete roof moulding costing 345, for the part only, this does not include fitting. Does this sound right to you. Seems very strange as its only the small corner bit missing... Read more

jc2, Don't think my door had a catch! I worked as an occassional van-boy in the rag trade in East London. I sat, half-out of the van, with my shoulder holding the door open and my feet on the windscreen pillar - crazy days!
We read a lot in the press of all the special offers manufacturers are offering in relation to the VAT increase. Conversely, Volkswagen, has taken the opportunity to incease its list prices, in addition to the VAT increase, but I haven't read anything about that. I wonder if we're about to see a round of increases from other manufacturers as, if one does it, often the others arent far behind. Read more
10 years ago VW used to sell cars for 20% more in the UK than Germany. Since Sterling weakened, some of their cars are now cheaper in the UK so I assume VW feel they now have to pass on price rises.
I am currently considering ordering a LHD Jaguar from a UK dealer as that may end up being cheaper than buying in Germany....
I have recently taken my car to a garage for repair, upon being advised of the costs for the repair i kindly refused and advised id collect my car, after refusing the garage informed me there was a charge outstanding for the time it took an engineer to determine the fault and compile a quote, now they wont release my vehicle!!! can they do this??

They can charge but you have to be warned of any charge in advance or it is a clear breach of Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008 (CPRs) and you could involve Trading Standards if they did not warn and are holding your car.
im thinking of part exchangeing my bmw for a fiat 500, i only brought this car from new in 2010 and its on finance but the repayments are huge! on a fiat i would save about £320 a month, would this be a stupid thing to do ? any suggestions please Read more
Welcome to the forum.
If your BMW is on a 3-year finance contract, you're best advised to keep it for at least 2 years to avoid negative equity (i.e. as mentioned above, the settlement figure being higher than the value of the car).
when i first start my car it runs fine without any problems, and i can drive it around for a while untill the choke knocks off then i have problems...

Ah! Not too many carby cars left on the road these days. You'll need to find an 'old man' to fix this, a lot of garages will be scratching their heads because they can't find the diagnostics port...;)
Most problems attributed to carbs are not actually due to the carb at all-resist the temptation to 'tweak' the mixture screw. Unless you have a CO probe, you're just guessing, and you can do a lot of damage if you get the mixture wrong (too rich can be as dangerous as too lean). You don't know how your new mixture will behave under load (which you CANNOT simulate by blipping the throttle).
This is a one instance where 'reading the plugs' is likely to yield dividends. Run the car on your drive until it warms up and stalls. Leave it to cool down. Do not restart the engine or the results will be invalid. Remove the plugs and look at the colour of the tips. If the tip is black and sooty, the mixture AT THE LAST FIRING EVENT was too rich. The block capitals are intentional. The engine must be switched off/stall under the conditions of interest, otherwise the effect will be masked.
If the mixture is too rich, I suspect that the carb float bowl is stuck open, flooding the intake manifold with fuel, which under low air flow conditions causes a very rich mixture.
Conversely, if the spark plug tips are grey/white, the mixture is too lean. Given the age of the car it is highly likely that a vacuum hose has started to perish and is admitting air. Check any hoses that are connected directly or indirectly to the intake manifold. A good 'leak test' trick is to spray a gaseous fuel-(I use a bottle of propane cigarette lighter refill) around the vacuum hoses. If the revs momentarily pick up, you know that: a.)you have a vacuum leak and b.) that the manifold mixture was too lean.
If the revs momentarily stumble you know that: a.) you have a vacuum leak
b.)the manifold mixture was too rich. (unlikely!)
Good luck!
