Hi, The air conditioning on my astra 2007 packed up a few months ago, I took it to have the gas topped up and was advised that there was a leak, and to sort this out would involve coloured gas to locate leat etc. Has anyone any experience with this problem, and can anyone recommend a suitable specialist for repairs in the Stockport area. The most common cause of leak in air conditioning systems is the condenser. It looks just like the radiator in your car, and in fact it's positioned directly in front of your radiator in the main air stream. Its purpose is to condense the high pressure gas produced by the compressor into a high pressure liquid. They can suffer damage from being hit by stones which are thrown up by other vehicles on the road.

Other components of the system use 'O' ring type seals. These can dry out if the system is not used and so will cause leaks. When air conditioning systems are re-gassed a dye which shows up under ultra-violet light is put in along with the R134a refridgerant. This dye is to enable leaks to be located easily....

Looking to purchase new (since Sept 2010) VW Touran 1.6 Blue motion with a towbar. Am told by VW Corporate that they have not yet decided if they are going to "allow" towbar to be fitted as it interferes with the superior mpg of Blue motion technology! Local dealer says he can fit one, no problem. Lease company says it will invalidate warranty. Result Impasse. Tried to get a definitive answer to no avail. No e-mail address available that I can see to get answer. Help please - even threatened to buy a Ford but the efficient Germans will not be moved. Read more

I had a problem with jaguar over a towbar even though it was a jaguar bar & jaguar electrical pack. hence to say I voted with my feet.

If its genuine tow bar & electrical pack I really can't see why there is a problem even with the lease company....

This whistle only occurs in the winter when the temperature drops below 10C and at a speed of between 27 & 29 mph. This happens even when the a/c is turned off and all climate controls are off. It also happens when free wheeling. The sound seems to come from the middle of the dash. The warmer outside the quieter the sound. The whistle comes in on acceleration and on decelleration between the 27 & 29 mph. Can anyone help - its driving me nuts! I have a recording if required. Read more

also if its more of a swish or whine, its very possible it could be the pinion beaings in the transfer you can hear ! often noted at slow speeds on & off the throttle and only on AWD model

I have a PD diesel with 25k on the clock and the yellow 'engine light' is showing (for 4 months). I have had it into my local dealership, paid £45+VAT for a diagnosis, and they have no idea, It could be this or that, and they need to fit new bits-not in stock- to find out what it is....this is not satisfactory. Has anyone any ideas as to what it is and how much to rectify? Suggestions geatly appreciated. many thanks. Read more

Be careful not to throw the baby out with the bath water.

You and I have both found VAG dealers to be wanting. I have found VAG products marketed with a "Skoda" sticker and assembled by them to be satisfactory (good, in the case of the AWX diesel engine) subject to the correction of (fixable) design defects. Your verdict is less certain....

Anybody used them for an MOT, they offer MOT for £25 with discount voucher, but do they make up the extra by finding minor (or worse) things wrong as other local garages I have used do (last one 'found' 5 things wrong but I was suspicious, so took it to my local specialist -they said none of them were failures and re-tested OK, still cost me price of another MOT though)..any experience? I realise this comment is way too late for you but hopefully it will be useful to others...

I got a quote for putting a set of new tyres on my car. The quote was really good and they are very local so I dropped my car off to have the work done. When I got my car back the steering was no longer aligned so the steering wheel now points left when I'm going straight ahead and at speeds of above 50mph the car starts snaking around. I phoned them to ask them to check the allignment and rectify the issue. They said I would have to pay to have it checked and pay for any subsequent work. I went elsewhere and will never return to this place....

My N reg VW Polo 1.4 petrol engined car which has done only 31k has just failed its MOT on exhaust emissions test. I do not think it has a catalytic converter. It has had a new exhaust system last year. What can be done to get it to pass?

31,000 miles on a 17 year old car is as much evidence as anyone needs. The car has never gone anywhere, so thrash it hard up the road and then present it for re-test.
