Have just received an email from a friend on the vexed subject of fuel prices. It suggests a way for buyers to bring effective pressure to bear on the sellers, rather than leaving them to control the market place. I am copying the whole email, and urge all consumers to support this initiative.

It may be worth a try

Dear All,
Here is an interesting idea to think about (and act upon?)...unless you've already received the same message independently!
Please see what you think and pass it on if you agree with it.

We are hitting £129.9 a litre in some areas now and soon we will be faced with paying £1.50 per litre. So Philip Hollsworth offered this good idea:

This makes MUCH MORE SENSE than the 'don't buy petrol on a certain day campaign' that was going around last April or May! The oil companies just laughed at that because they knew we wouldn't continue to hurt ourselves by refusing to buy petrol. It was more of an inconvenience to us than it was a problem for them. BUT, whoever thought of this idea, has come up with a plan that can really work.

Please read it and join in!

Now that the oil companies and the OPEC nations have conditioned us to think that the cost of a litre is CHEAP, we need to take aggressive action to teach them that BUYERS - not sellers control the market place. With the price of petrol going up more each day, we consumers need to take action. The only way we are going to see the price of petrol come down is if we hit someone in the pocket by not purchasing their petrol! And we can do that WITHOUT hurting ourselves. Here's the idea:

For the rest of this year DON'T purchase ANY petrol from the two biggest oil companies (which now are one) i.e. ESSO and BP.

If they are not selling any petrol, they will be inclined to reduce their prices. If they reduce their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit. But to have an impact we need to reach literally millions of Esso and BP petrol buyers. It's really simple to do!!

Now, don't wimp out on me at this point... keep reading and I'll explain how simple it is to reach millions of people!!

I am sending this note to a lot of people. If all of you send it to at least ten more (30 x 10 = 300)....and those 300 send it to at least ten more (300 x 10 = 3,000) ... and so on. By the time the message reaches the sixth generation of people, we will have reached over THREE MILLION consumers! If those three million get excited and pass this on to ten friends each, then 30 million people will have been contacted! If it goes one level further, you guessed it.....

THREE HUNDRED MILLION PEOPLE!!!

Again, all YOU have to do is send this to 10 people. That's all (and not buy at ESSO/BP). How long would all that take? If each of us sends this email out to ten more people within one day of receipt, all 300 MILLION people could conceivably be contacted within the next 8 days!!! Acting together we can make a difference. If this makes sense to you, please pass this message on.

PLEASE HOLD OUT UNTIL THEY LOWER THEIR PRICES It's easy to make this happen. Just forward this email, and buy your petrol at Shell,Asda,Tesco, Sainsburys, Morrisons, Jet etc. i.e. Boycott BP and Esso

Wouldn't be possible for us, as we only have one petrol station near us and thats an Esso. The only other one on my 18 mile journey to work is a BP !!. The next nearest to us, 8 miles away is also Esso.

the engine ticks over at 1200 revs until i turn the temperature ie' heater down to as low as possible, then the revs drop to a more acceptable 850. this heater control does control the revs until the car reaches absolute maximum temperature. is this normal. Read more

If it bothers you that much, whatever you do, don't buy an Avensis 1.8 petrol, not only does the fan increase revs when cold, but the initial idle speed starts somewhere around 1600-1700 rpm, and takes about 1-2 miles to settle down to normal!

I have to say though, doesn't bother me at all.

Hi All. I've now had both front tyre pressure monitoring (TPM) valves / units replaced as they'd fractured during the cold weather.

I note that the new parts are modified - they valve stem is a different metal to the original alloy ones. The engineer who fitted the last said there'd been a bulletin sent around advising not to use air pumps at supermarkets (long metal handle and metal barrel to place around / over valve) as these are rigid and can damage the valve stems if applied off-centre.... I take it Lucy that DOC will no longer be covered by Insurance requirements at S 144A (2) (4) RTA 1988 because it does not comply with the requirement:

In need of help from all the professionals out there, My mondeo SCi has recently started "pinking" between 30 -60mph, that is when it is more noticable, but it does tend to do this at all speeds.

Just took it to ford and they tell me that it is not showing any fault codes, therefore there is nothing wrong with it??!?!?!? I told them to take it for a test drive, and they said they couldn't "find" the problem, thing is It only does this when the engine is warm? Anyone any ideas? Read more

I suppose pinking could occur if the knock sensor's failed (although I've never heard of a failed knock sensor). Has the connection fallen off?

What are the diagnostics?

Friend has a 1.3 (skoda engine). It starts ok, ticks over ok, and accelerates ok. But on a steady throttle it just dies. So you have to go down the road gently accelerating, then it coasts as you back off, then picks up again when accelerating.

Any ideas? Read more
