the engine ticks over at 1200 revs until i turn the temperature ie' heater down to as low as possible, then the revs drop to a more acceptable 850. this heater control does control the revs until the car reaches absolute maximum temperature. is this normal.

If the Lexus had an electric heater which stood in for the conventional water heating matrix when the engine was cold then the symptoms you describe would make sense. I don't know if it does though. When you start your car from cold, how quickly can you feel hot air from the heater?

Secondly, I suggest you try turning other high demand accessories on instead of the heater and see how much they affect the idling speed. Try the heated rear screen, a/c compressor, heated seats....

Mine does the same and I've been told it's normal, stupid but normal. Switch off the fan and it idles normally. I've never known another car to do this though (and I've had quite a few!), but that's the least of my problems with an unco-operative Toyota dealer(was a used car) who'm I may have to take to court to fix my DMF and clutch master cylinder.

Chuckie888 - If that means there is an electric heater which provides instant cabin heat rather than having to wait several minutes for the engine to warm up on a cold morning, then it sounds a great feature to me. If it doesn't do that then it just sounds very strange!

There is no electric heater and it takes 10 miles to warm up fully in our current weather conditions! It's just strange as I said initially, but all the Toyota 2.2 177PS diesels do it apparantly. BTW I've had a new block and head due to Head Gasket failure and the coolant levels are fine now (no gas escaping into the system, no air locks) so it's just a "feature" as far as I am aware.

thanks for that steven, as mentioned by cookie888 it's a 'feature' one that i can not live with. it's driving me nuts sounds like a boy racer at the traffic lights. it will have to go.

If it bothers you that much, whatever you do, don't buy an Avensis 1.8 petrol, not only does the fan increase revs when cold, but the initial idle speed starts somewhere around 1600-1700 rpm, and takes about 1-2 miles to settle down to normal!

I have to say though, doesn't bother me at all.
