The exhaust system has developed a squeaky clatter - especially when moving from a stationary position. At speed the squeak disappears. When I grab the end of the exhaust pipe at the back of the car and shake it, the squaking is more obvious. I would like to be able to look underneath to see whether the problems is with the hangers, or clamps, or other damage/wear and tear - before deciding on course of action. Question I'd like to ask is - is it SAFE and worth my while jacking up the car on its side (using two jacks) to inspect underneath - or shall I just take it to the nearest garage - and fork out ? Any advice welcome! :-)

Greetings,
Looking back a few months i have some problems with my 406hdi 110hp. It simply isnt strong as it used to be. There were some troubles with MAF before that but i cleaned it with carbcleaner and it works just fine, but when i start the engine, "check engine" lamp stays on for a few secs and then goes off.... Yup. So many of these 'my turbo has failed, the dealer wants £1400 for a new one' boil down to a problem of turbo control, rather than the turbo itself. The turbo itself only has one moving part, and providing it is kept lubricated and cooled, it seldom fails. I don't know why turbos always seem to be the first thing people blame when a diesel engine doesn't behave correctly. Turbos are feedback loops; they can only spool if the engine provides sufficient fuelling to heat the exhaust gas sufficiently. Normally, 'lack of boost', is a symptom rather than the cause of loss of power.
I guess the turbo has replaced the carburetter as the whipping boy of choice. In the old days, everyone was convinced that a malfunctioning engine was due to the carb providing the 'wrong mixture'. As soon as an engine started misfiring, the first thing people did was to fiddle with the mixture control, usually ending up with an overly rich mixture, because that masked the true cause of the fault.
Durning the cold spell my 2004 7 seater Terrano central locking started to play up. Once i turned on the igination the doors all locked. I manually opened them and that was fine. On one occasion i got out of the car to put the trailer on (engine still running) and when i tried to get back in the doors were locked with key in. I used the spare key to open, and i have to carry it around with me yet to i find out what the problem is. Any ideas? Read more

Are you a first time driver that can't afford to keep your car on the road? Have you renewed your policy and found that your prices have rocketed? Hiya
The bonnet release has stopped working, it won't hold the bonnet so I'm relying on the safety catch. I called out a breakdown company, the mechanic said it's an electrical catch so there is nothing he can do, I don't think that's correct as I had a look and the wires appear to go to a sensor that registers when the bonnet is down (c/l lights flash). The cable is intact, I'm guessing it's a spring or something that has gone on the catch.
Can anybody confirm that it is a mechanical catch and is it possible to fix or does it need replacing, if so best place to get one.
TIA

Wife skidded on black ice and ended up in the ditch - no one else involved. She walked away OK. Seems the car will be an economic write off. She has full comprehensive insurance, tax and service history although when we went to get all the documention out and ready she'd forgotten to get the MOT renewed when it was in for a service last November (car has full service history). We have records of MOT certs upto expiry of the last one in Nov 10. The insurance could now been nulled, but do you think the insurance company could be sympathetic to her sitiuation? otherwise she has a previously spotless driving record. Also would you recommend coming clean straight away with the insurance company or wait until their assessor has been out and they give the final verdict on the claim?
Any advice or direction would be most appreciated. Read more
Well done.
When I first bought my Polo it vibrated quite alot on tick over and got noisier, and so decide to give it an overhall.Firstly I changed the diesel filter/air filter and oil and oil filter replaced the timing belt and tensioner aux belt and hydraulic valve lifters when doing this amongst other things I had to remove the righthand engine mount under the car and noticed the nut and bolt connecting to the engine was undone and rattling then when I got to changing the cam belt I set the diesel pump sprocket at TDC and noticed the timing was out on the fltwheel mark anyway put everything back together, but for some reason the car has developed a coldspot when first starting and within the coldspot it chucks out loads off smoke,so somewhere along the long it has got to be something to do with the idle booster from cold or in that area but dont know how to set it up.The engine runs ok once its is warmed up and has curd the vibration. Can anyone explain to me how to set the injector pump idle booster or cold start up. I learned today from an 'officer of the law' that West Yorkshire has disbanded its motorway traffic dept, gone entirely by all accounts.
If anything happens on the motorway then officers from the neighbouring areas will be expected come and sort it out. I couldn't help thinking that late at night the M62, M1 and A1 around Leeds and Bradford could well become a race track if there is not even the fear of chance of a ticket anymore.... Read more
When we do our monthly trip from Bury St Edmunds to Leicestershire using the A14/M1, we look out for the Eddie Stobart lorries to police car ratio. Last week Eddie won it 7/nil. That is unless all the police cars were unmarked.
