Am I missing something with hybrid cars? As far as I can see, none of them exactly eclipses the consumption and CO2 figures of their conventional petrol or diesel rivals. Am I right in saying that none of these can be charged from a charging point like a full electric car? If that is the case, then the batteries fitted to the hybrid car are always charged by the engine and therefore by petrol or diesel. This is a much more expensive way of charging than from the mains, especially with the spiralling fuel costs.
I have a 10 mile each way commute which I could do easily in an electric car. However, it wouldn't have the range I need for my other motoring needs and this is where a hybrid would come into its own. I would like to be able to switch in or out of fully electric mode depending on the type of driving I was doing... Read more

I'm looking for some advice on buying a small automatic car. The car will be shared between myself and my girlfriend and needs to be a "conventional" automatic box as opposed to a semi-auto or CVT. The car needs to be of Fiesta / Clio size but not any smaller as I am 6' 3" and dont fancy hopping in and out of a Micra every time I fancy a drive. Budget is 5k max.
Im not too bothered by style, reliability is the most important criteria, followed by economy and driving enjoyment.... Read more
How about a Nissan Note 1.6 Auto? Seems OK for tall people including in the back! (I’m 6ft 4” and I’m OK)
Chain Cam 1.6 engine with bullet proof conventional auto with an overdrive.
A colleague of mine has one (06) with no issues at all from new. He has also found it surprisingly economical – regularly in the 40’s occasionally just over 50.
I have an intermittant problem, can anyone help?
On starting from cold, just sometimes it makes a horrendous noise for a few seconds. It is coming from the belts area of the engine and sounds a bit like a number of tin cans being stirred in a metal bucket!! After a short while all is normal and quiet running. Nothing is visible, there are no leaks etc. I am otherwise well pleased with this car which has only done about 15,000 miles.... Read more
Thanks, that sounds a definate possibility. It is due a service in about 8 weeks, so I'll make sure the engine is flushed with the oil change.

I remember some years ago when we last all got upset by big fuel price hikes, an email round robin went around suggesting a boycott of the 2 major brands arguing that if enough people stopped buying these brands they would have to reduce their pump prices, thus starting a price war. Did anything ever happen?Just curious. Read more
The rate of improvement in fuel economy which is faster than the duty rise, should mean that you can even reduce the amount of fuel duty you pay over time, if you can resist that large-engined model!

Hi John, I have a 1.9D VW Polo and its driving me mad. I have to jump start it everytime I use it . I had a new battery in June last year and have been told the battery is ok. The altenator is charging so after a 150 mile run, you would think it would be ok the next day, but its not. It turns over very slowly or fails to start at all. Please help/advise. Thanks Read more
assuming you have been out in it for day after jumping it why dont you get a tester and test the battery before you leave it parked up overnight,,,then if its ok check the voltage again in the morning,if its fully charged or at least not lost any charge from the night before then probably your starter as peter suggests,,if battery has lost power then something electrical is obviously draining it,but at least doing it that way you are eliminating the starter,,,,,is it turning over ok to begin with and gradually draining because you are turning it over or is there just no life from the off?
Hi all,
I have an 05 2.0 TDCI (115) which is currently suffering from a rough idle. I've done a search on Google and various forums, but I can't seem to find anyone who is suffering the same symptoms as me, which I have detailed below.... Read more
What sort of bike carriers are best? I need to transport 2 bikes, one teenager sized and my adult one, to Devon & back in summer. One option I looked at is the towbar mounted ones, but as I don't have a towbar on my 06 Focus, makes the whole thing pretty expensive!
I have looked at the ones that attach to your rear hatch, but is all that weight good for the hatch itself?... Read more
Towbar and Maxxraxx are the best, great value for money, dont damage the car and very tough!

Plentiful but not infinitely lasting. There is a key difference.
