My son has a Golf Mk 4 which may have ECU problems. Engine management light comes on, and the revs are cut down. Diagnostics didn't reveal anything, and it seems OK again now. If it is the ECU, is it feasible to get secondhand ones, as I understand they're expensive? Any other ideas>
Thanks Stuart Read more
I doubt if it is the ECU itself - usually it either works or it doesent.
What age is the car and what engine has it got?
Hi Stupid question but I don't know how to ventilate my car properly i.e. how to prevent windows from frosting over on the inside.

I think the Swear filter caught my link above.
The fix is described here too, but more long-winded:...
Hi, my husband and i have recently seperated. He has been missing for a week although i know he is alive and well as hes been withdrawing money etc.
how ever he is in my car, hes registered on the insurance but as he has ran out of money i am worried that he might do something like fill up the tank and drive of. can i report my car as taken without consent even if he is on the insurance. I dont really want to cause him trouble but i want to cover my own back.... Read more
Hi Tyke,
Just a thought but if you say he has been 'missing'/AWOL for a period of time, have you considered contacting the Police on the basis of 'concern for welfare'? They ought to be able to flag up the car reg and if and when he passes a traffic unit they would presumably make an attempt to pull him over and establish his intentions etc. It also avoids you taking what could be made to look like malicious action, as you can state that you contacted the Police purely out of concern....
Hello All,
Our Micras interior light is not working. It hasn't worked as long as we have had the car (1 month). I have checked the fuses in the compartment to the right of the steering wheel and also the bulb itself + connections.... Read more

No claim and hence no loss of no claims. Make sure it is removed from the stolen list with the police and the vehicle registers (especially HPI and Experian)
I have a Mazda Xedos 9 that has started to have an over heating problem.
The car starts and runs fine until you get stuck in traffic, the temperate gauge goes up just passed the half way mark and the electric fans cut in ok but, then steam starts coming out of the front of the radiator. I had a looked when the engine cooled down there was plenty of water in the radiator, but there is a hose that goes in to the engine block with a radiator cap on it. When I undone the cap it seemed bone dry in side? Would this be the thermostat gone? ... Read more
If the water water was boiling, thus the steam, the gauge would be much higher or in the red. I would suggest you have the header tank smapled/stiffed for signs of combustion gasses in the coolant. This could be a head gasket seaping. If all is Ok then a stat change may be in order but odd the gauge does not climb up. Regards Peter
I've just bought a Renault Clio RT 1998, but a few worrying noises coming from her, so hoping one of you lovely lot can help reassure me! She idles like a dream and looks well looked after - very tidy bodywork and interior; 65,500 miles on the clock. Bought her last week for £725, she had just had the cambelt and water pump done.
I am a relatively new driver and a bit concerned over a few things I've noticed!
Firstly, she has a whirring sound that comes from her engine when slowing right down from speed - when she comes to a stop, the whir comes from under the bonnet, like something winding down - lasts about 5 seconds, gradually fading out. My boyf thinks maybe the clutch? Also just noticed that turning round a corner (braking and downshifting from 4th to 2nd) she was a bit crunchy - she can be a bit crunchy trying to get her into 1st (especially block changing from 3rd, but also from 2nd).
Also, when doing a tight turn, there's a 'thunk' from the back left (I think) when I release the steering from full lock - worried the steering rack is on the way out or a problem with the bearings.
Also a squeal when I pull off - we think it might just be wheel spinning (I'm used to a diesel tank and not a nippy petrol!) but also worried it may be something else like a belt?
Finally (sorry for so many questions!), when waiting at a roundabout yesterday, the engine just died! I'm sure it wasn't a stall, as no lurch or judder. Just went very quiet. This worries me!
What do you think could be causing these various problems and do you think these could be costly to fix? I was ripped off with my first ever car and it totally died after 7 weeks - now concerned that I have saved up again to buy this one and she'll do the same! Just noticing clunks and noises more as I drive her - don't mind spending money on her, but I need to know she's safe to drive, especially as I have a child in the car with me a lot :-/
All advice gratefully received :-) Read more
Those cars are simple but require a bit of driver input to go well. They will stall at the slightest provocation-no computer assistance here. Don't worry too much about the downshifting-those gearboxes are not the slickest. I find the gearbox reluctant to change into 2nd-and first is even worse-don't go from 3rd to 1st! better to stop and start all over. The belts are often noisy (whirrs, squeaks etc), but if cambelt and water pump have been done, i wouldn't worry.
The car is safe to drive-but if you're an inexperienced driver, she won't flatter your driving! I learned to drive in a diesel, and the switch to this engine was a baptism of fire. The clutch is heavy, the throttle jerky-stalling, lurching etc. No guarentees with a car of this age of course, but I reckon you're good to go.
been on holiday for 3 weeks returned to start car, started fine but all needles on speedo and rev counter went over to max ,presume computer resetting as trip computer went back to zero also.
problem is now every time i start the car the boot release opens the boot resulting in me having to get out and close the boot , strange ,any ideas welcome. Read more
put in garage and they said it was the boot switch in boot so disconected it.
cant open boot from out side now but it still works from remote or by pushing button on dash so waste of money fixing it
