I have a 1991 1.2 Nissan Micra, it's done about 56,000 miles and has been a good car, until recently. Over the past 4 months the head gasket has gone twice and as you can imagine that's cost me quite a bit. Just before Christmas it died again and the garage have told me it's now in such a bad state they are looking for a second hand engine to put in it. They have told me this will cost me about £450. So, my question is: is it worth paying more to keep it going; if I do get it fixed, will it be worth £450 if I part ex it, or should I cut my losses, scrap it and buy a new-ish second hand car? It's already become none stop repairs over the last 6 months. I'm thinking you could be right, maybe a yaris or peugeot 107? Whatever, it's looking like the best thing is get rid of the old banger :-)

Did you use a non-permanent sealant when fitting,if so might as well have used grease or oil!Did you clean all oil from seal housing before fitting new seal and not handle new seal with oily hands?

Probably not a good idea to reuse the seal which has popped out as it may now be damaged. ...

help, I"m at my wits end. About one month ago on a cold morning, i started my car and left it to warm up as usual. when returning to it ten mins later, i found it to have stalled. Since then the car has given me nothing but trouble. sometimes it starts, sometimes it doesn"t. sometimes it stalls when braking coming up to roundabouts and when stationry or idlling, sometimes its fine. sometimes it kangaroos everywhere and sounds like its running on three cylinders. It seems worst when its wet or damp. Now it keeps going into limp mode and wont go above 2300rpm. If i disconnect the battery and leave it for a period of time say 24hrs, it seems to reset itself and run as normal and like its old self. then 30mins into the journey or the next time i start it any of the above problems might surface. To date i"ve tried changing the fuel filter, changed the lifter pump in the tank, cracked my injector pipes to see if there working, they are. checked the timing, all good, plugged it into a computer, the reading came back that " the fuel pump relay was malfunctioning". I"ve changed this (located behing the ecu) and still no joy. I"ve also checked the wiring for brakes or wear and tear. Where i have found anything, I"ve securally taped and joined the wires. I"ve read on quite a few forums that this seems to be a reacuring problem with the hdi, but i cant find anyone who has actually been able to fix it. What do you suggest? Read more

Although the OPs issue is probably long sorted (the thread is dated 2011) I've found on three occasions that this problem has been down to the in-tank pump, either the strainer filter being blocked or just sticking. A strong tap on the top of the pump usually sorts it. But this has been on cars made before 1998 and / or done over 150,000 miles.

I've got a rather perplexing issue with a Renault immobilizer. After unlocking the doors using the key fob, and before the immobiliser light starts blinking I put the key in the ignition and the immobiliser kicks in. But this is intermittent, as I can cycle the ignition and it will work on the 4, 5th or 6th time. There doesn't seem to have any difference as to whether I try before or after the solid light indicating the key-check has finished or not. It has both started and immobiliser in either situation. So I'm thinking this is some sort of intermittency issue... I opened up the key and didn't see any issues there (I can provide images if that would be helpful) all connections seem to be fine. I did a successful resync of the key fob following the instructions here (www.programyourkeys.com/Renault_Megane_Key_Remote_...l). and the problem persists. The fob (RF+Chip) unlocks the doors just fine, so I'm fairly certain that it isn't a fob battery issue either. I've tried to determine the four digit unlock code but haven't had any luck with that either (www.bba-reman.com/content.aspx?content=Test_for_Re...e), as I have an 8 digit ignition key number which doesn't seem to match up with the software floating around the internet. Any suggestions? I'd be most grateful for any suggestions.

Hi all

My escort van has started playing me up for the last 3 months. It started getting sluggish so i put a can of injector cleaner in what a mistake that was it vertualy killed it ,coughing, spluttering, wouldnt start , smoking like a bonfire , after being towed home the rac had a look he bypassed the fuel filter and all was ok for an hour then it went back to all the mentioned problems. So then my local garage had it in all the injectors were blocked so they were all sorted all new filters and pipes £250 later all was ok for about a week. Then it has since gone sluggish again 70 flat out on the flat 50-60 up hills . It just seems to me that something is just not fireing correct like in a petrol engine that is miss firing .Also my biggest concern is the drop in fuel consumption i used to get 475-540 to a tank now it is down to 360-380 . I have spoke to my local garage and the reply was it must be the fuel pump very expensive to sort out . Can a fuel pump make this happen i think it is something very simple that has been overlooked but i know nothing about engines so im useless. Could someone shed any light on this or is the end of the life for the van coming.... Read more

What speed are you looking for from your 15 year-old van on the flat??? :(

Injector cleaner will not help in a contaminated fuel system!15 years of tank condensation and often previous owners using old cans to top up between service-station fill-ups and fuel filters left unchanged, along with fuel tanks run low, will have put water/muck through the pump.Lost count of how many old diesel tanks I removed when in the trade to clean out....

Hi would appreciate some help my Golf 1.9 GT TDi 2000 has been taken a good few attempts to start hot or cold i have now change the glow plug relay(167) green coolant tempreature sensor and the glow plugs its now starting a bit better but not how it should be, still sometimes it may take 3-5 turns of the key, once its started i have no problems the car runs fine, before i had this problem the car sometimes would not start untill i had taken out the key put it back in again would that be the immobilizer and do think both problems are linked.

I own a '97 saab with a 2.0 liter turbo engine. At idle a clanking sound occurs and disappears. The sound is unlike a lifter or ticking, it is a distinctive clanking, rattle of a metalic nature. The car has made these noises for 30,000+ miles. Any thoughts? My guess is perhaps a timing or balance chain guide.

Thanks,... Read more

Most likley timing chain issue, I would be very carefull about driving it as they do fail! Another possibility is if its an auto is the flex plate rattling! If it has a crack
