Mazda Xedos 9 - thermostat gone? - gb51fun

I have a Mazda Xedos 9 that has started to have an over heating problem.

The car starts and runs fine until you get stuck in traffic, the temperate gauge goes up just passed the half way mark and the electric fans cut in ok but, then steam starts coming out of the front of the radiator. I had a looked when the engine cooled down there was plenty of water in the radiator, but there is a hose that goes in to the engine block with a radiator cap on it. When I undone the cap it seemed bone dry in side? Would this be the thermostat gone?

If the water water was boiling, thus the steam, the gauge would be much higher or in the red. I would suggest you have the header tank smapled/stiffed for signs of combustion gasses in the coolant. This could be a head gasket seaping. If all is Ok then a stat change may be in order but odd the gauge does not climb up. Regards Peter
