West Yorkshire - Motorway Police Dept Gone - Trollhattan

I learned today from an 'officer of the law' that West Yorkshire has disbanded its motorway traffic dept, gone entirely by all accounts.

If anything happens on the motorway then officers from the neighbouring areas will be expected come and sort it out. I couldn't help thinking that late at night the M62, M1 and A1 around Leeds and Bradford could well become a race track if there is not even the fear of chance of a ticket anymore.

Reason given was cutbacks.

Two or three years ago Humberside,N Yorks and West Yorks Police formed a Traffic/ Crime fighting Unit for jointly patrolling the area mentioned above so all is not lost but maybe a reduced strength.

Suspect the Traffic unit around Bradford gave up the struggle some time ago. Purely from observation of driving in daylight hours, on the occassions I had to visit.

Humberside still exists for some functions. Police and Fire Brigade still use the old boundaries.

Reducing Traffic cover is becoming increasingly the norm and IMO a somewhat short sighted option..as crooks drive...over and above the other essential work required.

Pursuits, if done sensibly and within the appropriate guidelines need to be done by properly trained staff in the correct vehicles...for many Forces, that is Traffic only.

There must be someone available to cover a m/way...they can't just withdraw and wash their hands of it..who would investigate a Fatal?

When we do our monthly trip from Bury St Edmunds to Leicestershire using the A14/M1, we look out for the Eddie Stobart lorries to police car ratio. Last week Eddie won it 7/nil. That is unless all the police cars were unmarked.
