Hi we have recently had a problem with the pump leaking on the rear (the seal where the feed pipes join the main body of the pump) Bosch pump. whilst removing the pump end the drive shaft was damaged (the pump shaft internal) we bought a second hand pump and replaced the end cap and drive and rewired the edc and now the engine will not start at all (checked the timing both valve and pump checked fuel to the injectors all seems to be ok) any suggestions would be helpful Read more

If you have fuel to the injectors but its not starting that would suggest that the pump timing is out, do you get any exhaust smoke when you try to start it?

my corsa broke down a few weeks ago and the top end wont turn, I have been told its the timing chain by a mechanic, but I can only find reference to a timing belt, and no one seems willing to look at! has the engine been damaged too much or what can i do:-( Read more

Yes it is a timing chain. Expect a few bent valves and a hefty bill. Look up good garages on this forum header. Regards Peter

I've got some 10w/30 fully synthetic for my Nissan.

Can I use this to top up my wife's 2004 petrol Punto that ordinarily uses 10w/40 semi synthetic? Read more

Dutchie

A six year old car well run in engine. I can't see any problem topping up with synthetic oil.

When I see that, I park tight up against the driver's door, if I'm in the car I bought for fifty quid.

I have just purchased a high mileage , ex lease company VOLVO S40 1.8 PETROL 2007 Model from a large motor trader in South Wales.

The Dashboard Fault light showing the Transmission / Engine symbol has just came onto the dashboard screen. I have looked into the book and it say there is an Emission Fault with the vehicle and requires to be checked by the manufacturers main dealers.... Read more

Hi all, my TomTom One needs to be updated quite often via the PC otherwise it takes ages to find the satelites. My daughters basic Garmin to my knowledge never updates but finds the Sat's straightaway all the time.

Can anyone explain this please?... Read more

I've always found the older Tom Toms really slow to get a GPS fix, especially if moving or in a poorer signal area. GPS quick fix is software cheat which tells the device where the satellites are - speeding up the process. Presumably the Garmin models might be quicker at acquisition.

To speed the process up on the Tom Tom - go to the GPS screen showing the satellites and signals being received - and position / hold the unit so that at least three grey bars are continuously above the horizontal line - three seconds after the next half minute mark you should get a lock and the bars will change to solid blue.

I bought a brand new Lancer last month and am pleased with it. It has a fancy reversing camera viewed via the sat nav screen on it, which failed after two weeks. The car went to the dealers for repair. They had a look and need a part that has to be ordered.

Touché: As Area Manager of Cambridge University Press, I cannot fault your answer! However, rather than snobbery, my point is that the word technician is now mysteriously disregarded in favour of the term "engineer", which has become stretched almost to breaking point. It seems that anyone who has done any course in anything vaguely technical or electronic instantly becomes an "engineer"; I have engineers in my family who have amassed years of apprenticeships or university degrees. I much prefer the definition I found in an online dictionary "One who is trained or professionally engaged in a branch of engineering" (but please don't tell my manager!)

The most extreme example of title-consciousness (snobbery?) is to be found amongst Austrian engineers, who insist on being addressed as "Herr Diplom-Ingenieur Schmidt" in both professional and private life. (I don't think "Herr Klimaanlage-Ingenieur" would cut any ice at the Vienna Motor Show!)
