Various - Why don't cars have door guards anymore? - John v2011

Hi

Why are there so many cars built these days without door guards?

My car has just received yet another small dent and scrape by some inconsiderate driver who has caught my car as they have opened their door.

Door guards would prevent these issues and spare the expense of getting the problem resolved.

What do you think?

John

Its style over substance.

Along with why are bumpers so easily damaged? The used to be black plastic or chrome steel which could cope with touching another car at <1mph. Indeed, I seem to remember Volvo mounting the bumpers on dampers so they could compress in by half an inch or so.

Although annoyed at the first dent on mine, I then relaxed. I notice I'm up to about 6 now.

The original KA was sold with bumpers and mudguards in non-painted plastic and made in three sections so that each could be replaced on it's own(£25 each);people hated them-wanted them painted to match the car.Style over substance-form over function.

Have you tried looking on Ebay or in Halfords etc.? I feel sure such guards can be bought for most cars and simply glued on. I know my car (Fiat) can be supplied new with these guards fitted,or bought as retro-fit for about £20. The truth is they look dreadful on any car. Try to park away from old, rough looking cars, avoid parking next to any 4x4 or van. I also try to park so that only one side of the car is next to a car,the other side being next to a wall. This cuts the risk by 50%!

Door guards have to be pretty substantial to be of any use and the fickle car buyer will not buy the car that looks industrial.

They'd have to be to the tops of the doors to survive assault from the various rear door shapes now around that form a decent enougn point when opened wide...when satans children vacate the family from hell's mini charabang there's little hope for anything other than something miltary to withstand the inevitable clout.

edit...check the car beside you for rear child throne's before turning engine off.

I try and park in a quiet area far away in a supermarket car park YET quite often when I return someones parked right next to me in an otherwise empty car park - anyone know why?

My wife's old Grandis came with out them but I found that they had them as an option. As her car was dark blue, you hardly notice them (as they come unpainted).

What I wish they'd bring back are proper rubber bumpers.

It's like the nutter who will come and sit next to you on an otherwise empty bus or train.

As a dubious solution to the problem of door scrapes, I've noticed some people in car parks - especially pubs - park their car in the middle of two marked spaces (so that the white line goes up the middle of the bonnet) to try and prevent anyone else coming too near them.

Is that clever, or arrogant and selfish?

When I see that, I park tight up against the driver's door, if I'm in the car I bought for fifty quid.
