Hi, I have a Ford Mondeo estate and I am trying to put some more oil into it but cannot get the oil cap off. It clicks when I turn it but does not come off, when I try and turn it the other way it does not move at all. I have tried pushing down on it and turning but it just clicks. Any ideas? Could I put oil down the dip stick channel in the short term? Read more

You should turn the cap anticlockwise in order to remove it. Turning clockwise tighens it and it will then "Click" indicating that it's now tight enough.

Try to unscrew the cap with the engine hot if you can't move it when cold. Might help to loosen it.

Hi everyone need some advice quickly.

Sold a car 2 years ago. Was then contacted by an insurance company and police 2 weeks later to say the car had been involved in accident after sale date. I told them the details of the buyer and advised i was no longer the owner. I also sent a letter to the dvla to advise that they had not taken my name off the logbook and to do so with the correct details asap and provided date of sale.

2 years later now a third party company presumably working for an insurance company has contacted me advising me to prove that i sold the car, i advised all relevant parties are aware who the owner was at the time as i have given the details, it seems to me that the person that bought the car has refused to accept liability one way or another and now the company has come to me?

I have now received a letter from the MIB advising that they believe i was the owner and driver which i was clearly not. I don't have much documentation to prove the sale as it was 2 years ago and just thought it would be a normal sale.

I have already advised the third party company that the vehicle was sold but it seems that due to dvla not changing my name off the logbook at the correct time they keep on wanting to pursue me. I have now requested from the dvla details of when the vehicle was taken off my name. It seems as though dvla does not update records on time which from experiences of other people on other websites are experiencing quite a bit.

It seems as though whoever had the accident is trying to pull a fast one and i am being blamed for it. How can i defend these allegations if the dvla have messed up with the records. By the looks of it after 2 years they are now looking for a scapegoat. Do you think i should contact a solicitor as it seems that this situation is getting a bit out of hand now.

Would appreciate a reply with advice.

Best regards

My Forester lives outside. We live up in the Pennines, and it gets jolly cold sometimes. My wife wife finds it infuriating that the doors will often be frozen shut, and the screen/windows covered in solid ice.

A perfect solution would be some kind of heater (car specific), which plugs into the mains, that runs on a timer, which will kick in at a preset time and warm the cars interior before the school run. Therefore getting all the frost/ice melted off, hopefully freeing up the doors that little bit too.

Any ideas? I can only find things that run off the 12v socket as supplementary heaters.

I know that we could pop out 10mins early and leave the car running, but Mrs Seadog hates doing that. Read more

"If you don't unroll it the current draw of a heater will turn it into a melted smoking mess!"

Yes, that's axiomatic. There are sometimes two current ratings given for the reel, one with the cable IN and one with the cable OUT....

My ford fiesta zetec is leakng alot of water. The leak seems to be coming from under the engine rather than the radiator at the front. I am having to fill up water every day. Do i need a new water pump and if so, is it a big job that will cost a lot? Could this also be linked to cold air coming from my air conditioning even when turned up full on heating? any advice very welcome! Read more

I expect this question has resurfaced because some moron wrote to HJ in the DT motoring section saying that they used it and it had worked and Hj published it.

The catalyst ahead of the DPF is platinum lined and, unlike this snake oil, it's not a total-loss system.

Ford are claiming that a spark plug is responsible for bore damage leading to a replacement of the no.4 short block. This has led to a bill of £3500 which dealers have agreed to pay half. They are refusing the claim because spark plugs are only vcovered for one year. This is despite not proving to me that it was a plug and not some other cause . Read more

If the spark plug that allegedly caused the damage was fitted by a Ford dealer, then that dealer is liable in law to pay for the damage caused by that faulty spark plug.

If said Ford dealer is reluctant to pay 100% of the cost of repairing the damage remind the dealer of their obligations under the sale of goods act.

Am looking at buying a used A3 up to 80k miles around 55 to 57 plate. Was initally looking at a 2 litre for a bit of poke but while looking I have come across a couple of reasonably priced A3 Quattro V6s at about the £5k to £6k mark.

This seems such an amazing price for such a high performance care fully kitted out with sat-nav, full leather, etc.... Read more
