I have had problem with the automatic gearbox changing from 4th gear up into 5th & 6th gears when going up through the gears at around 3,000 rpm. I have taken it up to the redline before pulling back on the speed and changed gear manually. My local dealer looked at this problem for the first time back in April this year when it was in for service. They said they couldn't replicate it and all was alright. The car was back at the same dealer for a recall and fix some other problems in late May. I asked them to look at this same gear change problem again, but still denied it was happening. The other problems they fixed back in May had gone wrong again, and still I had the gear change problem. The same dealer sent out their senior technician on test drive with me and he experienced the problem and agreed that it was a cause for concern. The car was returned to me later that day, and I was told that I had fitted the wrong tyres to the front and it was this that was causing the problem. Both front and back tyres are the same (225, 55,17) apart from the rear set are 97W rating where as the front are 101W, a difference of just over 4% on the load distribution. The company who supplied the tyres have hit the roof as they stand by what they have fitted, pointing out that they supply the Citroen dealer who made the diagnosis.
My question is: Has anyone ever heard of such a situation, and could somebody explain to me how such a small difference in tyre spec. can make such a difference. Citroen UK at Coventry are backing this theory to the hilt.... Read more
Just wanted to say I have had exactly the same problem with my 6 year old C5 HDI tourer, and found all the comments very helpful. My local 'oily rag' garage solved the problem immediately when I told them of this Forum, by swapping the rear wheels for the front ones. Gearbox works perfectly now. It was interesting that the semi auto/manual gearbox was fine, even when swapping from auto to manual whilst cruising. Citroen dealer just sucked their teeth, and blabbed on about computer software updates at huge expense. My oily mechanics scratched their heads when the wheel swapping worked, no idea why or how. Still it hasn't put me off the C5, just ordered a brand new one. Lovely car to travel in and drive.
New to this but read column. Checked on Audi website and there seems to be a lot of problems with the MMI system. Mine just shut down this afternoon. The screen went blank , no telephone, radio,cd sd anything. When I got home I reset it according to the handbook but still dead. Nothing spilt near or on the operating knob. Any ideas out there. Taking it to Audi apparently can cost up to 1K according to their forum.
Thanks to anybody/everybody who answers... Read more
Post this on the VWAudiforum.co.uk in the appropriate section. Regards Peter

Is this a good buy?
Ford S-MAX Titanium, 56 plate, 99,000 miles, panoramic roof, part leather trim. The car is immaculate inside (almost as new), has full service history, and the dealer is asking £7,995. Read more
Seems expensive, I can vouch the smax being an excellent car however. We commute to south of France as a family and average 55mpg when fully loaded with 4 adults plus boot full with wine at 55mph in 6th gear with cruise on.
Front tyres (continental sport contact) 25k miles and rears last 40k miles. You will only achieve these nbrs if you drive like a driving instructor however (which I am) as the cars heavy. If your driving is "enthusiastic" for want of a better word, you ll be burning rubber at twice this rate at a cost of gbp180 per corner and mpg down to 40mpg or less. I average 50.5 mpg on combined rural road driving.
Smax Winter steelies for the snow plus it carries more than a Discovery which could not achieve more than 29mpg. Plus the Land Rover was in the garage 4 times from brand new in first year.
Smax Interim oil service is gbp29.99 at Formula One. Major service gbp300 at Halfords plus tyres.
Yet again my car is holed up at the dealership due to failed injectors. These replacements have taken 5 days to arrive and now they announce that they can't get them coded ( or something like that)
It is 2 1/2 years old and this is the fourth set of injectors.
I thought I was buying into a premium brand. Never again!

Had new Spheres fitted to the suspension last year but now feel every bump in road from front nearside . Someone suggested it may be Strut problem.
Any comments would be welcome Read more
It's possible the rubber membrane inside the sphere has ruptured. This would normally separate the suspension fluid from the nitrogen gas & give the suspension movement & damping. A new sphere would be required.
Otherwise possibly a bent strut.
Front nearside door is shut and will not open. Tried the external and internal handles but no good. Tried the remote and the internal unlock button on the dash, no good. The solenoid sounds like it's moving but can't open the door. As the door is shut can't get the internal trim off to get at the workings, any help or ideas welcome. Read more
