I bought an 08 Passat with 90K on the clock 18 months ago and was disappointed with getting an average 40mpg doing 20K a year on mostly long motorway runs. It was recalled in January 2012 for new fuel injectors after which the consumption increased to almost 46mpg. As VW have known about this injector problem for some time do you think the is a case for compensation for reduced consumption to that advised by VW? Read more

Railroad.

This is because fuel injector nozzles become worn over time. As the nozzles wear the fuel pressure reduces, and the fuel then doesn't atomise quite as well leading to reduced combustion efficiency. A new set if injector nozzles will give the engine a new lease of life.

Pumps don't create pressure, they create flow. Opposition to flow creates pressure, and that's why the condition of the injector nozzles are so important.....

Lewis Hamilton says he is leaving "boring switzerland" to move to monaco, but when I lived there and we had several celebrity clients with jaguars and range rovers, plus diplomats, they all appreciated that we left them alone if we saw them in the Garage or the shops or wherever. Whats up lewis, not enough people grovelling at your feet? (light heartedly said) Read more

I need to replace the reluctor ring on the RHS driveshaft of a 306.

I attempted this a few weeks ago and got to the stage where the hub carrier needed to come off and was unable to do so because it was stuck solid. I tried drifting it off and bent up a homemade gear puller in the attempt.... Read more

I've only ever used a hammer, with the nut covering the driveshaft threads, & usually come apart with the first good wack. ( If youv'e got 2 hammers, put the ball end of one against the end of the shaft then hit that with a bigger hammer )

I havn't had a 306 but other Citroens have just needed the bottom ball joint removed to get enough movement in the carrier to extract the shaft & CV....

Last april, I had a minor scrape on a roundabout, where someone pulled out in front of me when I was already on the roundabout, (it was quite a big roundabout) I managed to stop safely and tooted my horn. the other person also stopped, (no contact at this time) looked at me then drove off and as he moved away his trailer grazes the front of my nearside wing, minor scratch. He attempted to drive off down some back streets and into a parking with a high wall, but I just saw him and followed him in and confronted him. He was agrressive and after a few minutes he said ok, the police are down the road, lets go there, so we did. Upon confirmation that no-one was injured the very helpful pc did a check that both vehicles were insured, (yes) and told us to get on with it. the other person refused to give me his details until he was told he had to, his excuse was that i would not give him my peronal phone numbers, which I don't have to by law, and it saves all those irritating texts and calls from accident management companies. I informed my insurance company immediately of the incident, and it was touched up for not very much locally, so no need for me to claim. 6 months later, as you have all guessed by now a PI claim for whiplash! As I denied liability and there seemed to be enough pointers in my favour the insurance company sent out an investigator who turned out to be a very competent ex-policeman with much experience in traffic, We visited the scene, and we had 2 hours where he took me through everything, took a statement and told me I had nothing to worry about. On the basis of this my insurance company denied liability and told me that if nothing more was heard in 6 months the case would be closed. Now on phoning for an update, as suddenly I have been getting texts and calls about making a claim myself in this case, i was told by my insurer that it could drag on for 3 years before they close the case and restore my ncd if the other side do not reply.

You do need to check ALL the comparison sites though - some of them are owned by insurance companies.

eg Confused.com is owned by EUI Limited which also owns Admiral, Bell Direct, Diamond and elephant.co.uk

According to my handbook my manual 6 speed has Castrol BOT130 at new (4 years ago). Since this oil is unobtainable I have just drained and filled with Ford oil (WSD-M2C200-C) as the gearbox is a Ford. All logical but the outcoming oil looked red ; could Volvo have used anything handy or is BOT130 red? Do all manual transmission oils mix happily? Synthetic and non synthetic? I didn't have enough oi to flush; should I be worried? Opinions welcomed. Read more

No, I did not smell fags on inspecting the car but a pleasant scented smell - obviously a temporary mask like Febreeze had been used. It has taken the full £55 intereior valet to eradicate the smell and valeter agreed a masking scent had been used. If I had realised prev owner was a smoker I probably would not have bothered to go and look....

Use this as your guide - its what all insurers should be following.

In most cases, we assess the market value as the retail price which the policyholder would have had to pay for a comparable vehicle at a reputable dealer, immediately before the date of the damage/theft....
