I have just taken delivery of a new A3 and I'm now booked up to take my new car to Holland.
I understand that I need to use headlight deflectors if I use my dipped headlights, however I plan not to do any night driving as at is my first venture into driving in Europe.
I have two questions with regard to this. As my new car is fitted with LED DRL's, this will cover me for lights during the day if visibility is good. So if I am not going to use my dipped beams do I still need to fit headlight deflectors, or can I just have them in the car to be fitted if I do need to use my dipped beams?
Also, will the headlight deflectors work with the xenon headlights (not the adaptive ones) on the A3? Read more

In my experience it's only in France that the police seem to check headlamp beams and even then it's a question of really bad luck to get caught. There are occasional checks at borders, and les flics theoretically can carry out on the spot checks for things like Hi-Vis jackets, insurance documents, GB stickers or EU-style registration plates, etc. The Dutch police are nowhere near as ruthless in this respect. On the spot fines are possible but nowhere near as common as in France.

You say that you are not planning to drive at night, but why not just fit the beam deflectors anyway? You may drive after dark; you may encounter banks of fog and it may rain (it does rain in Holland!) and driving along dazzling every other driver you pass on the road is not exactly courteous....

When the similar gearbox mount failed on my Fiesta 1.4 Tdci, I could move the engine by a couple of inches by hand. Seems like yours is still good. I've repaired the failed mount by cutting small rectangles out of an old bicycle tyre and sticking them down the sides of the rubber which had broken away from the metal frame, and then filling around it with a black compound called "The Works" from Screwfix (£10, but then I had it in for another job, and my local garage wanted over forty quid for a new one). "The Works" sets in a similar manner to Sikaflex 252, but is cheaper. Now let's see if the repaired mounting lasts!

Buy yourself a 3 year old BMW for £8000 and claim the miles.

I purchased a ford focus c-max 2.0 tdci, 42,000 miles seen on auto trader from a dealer about 100 miles away from me. I agreed a price on the promise that the car was sound and it was delivered to me at a mutually convenient location. As soon as I received the car I noticed an alarming knocking sound from the car and I immediately informed the seller via text message that I was going to have the noise checked out by a garage local to myself for an opinion.

My first very own insurance on my 1.6 Focus after passing (with husband on policy) was £480 ish, at 24.5 years of age. We're talking 2008 here.

Sister is trying the same; she's 25 and will be using a Clio. £1500 is the least she could find....

I visited my local branch several times last summer, I figured I needed to add at least £600+ to the hammer price to get the car on the road to cover fees and charges, tax, MOT, servicing and transportation. And then there's taking a day off work with the chance you may not actually buy on the day, so all in all I reckoned it would be costing me around a grand. Given the high hammer prices I was seeing it became obvious its actually cheaper to buy from a garage.

The engine cuts to limp home mode and the orange engine warning light comes on for no apparent reason - very unwelcome on a motorway.

If I turn the engine off and restart, it fires and runs as normal again, but the orange light stays on for a day or two, and then goes off. ... Read more

I'm sure that this is a familiar situation but it's all new to us so I'd welcome any advice/comments.

I wasn't there but this is what I was told. A relative's Citroen was alongside another car, facing a red light and waiting for it to change. A third car came up from behind, between the first two and collided with both. My relative's car was a write-off, losing a rear wheel in the process but no-one was injured. The third car driver seems to have remarked that he was distracted at the time. ... Read more
