local deesel prices in Hampshire are almost up to 150p a litre. The latest protest by the fairfuel organisation has seemingly fallen on deaf ears. Motorists pay so many taxes it would be interesting to work out how much the average owner pays a year. Road tax, fuel tax, VAT on parts and labour, VAT on the fuel tax.....anyone know the whole score? Read more

There is an old saying in the UK put brain into gear before you open your mouth.

One must ensure that one's brain is engaged before telling others to put their brains into gear....

I have a VW polo sport 1.4 year 2003 done 74K miles. I bought when it was 65K miles in Sep 2010. In around mid last year 2011 I got yellow engine sign in dashboard. I took it to garage. They put it in computer and they changed the EGR Valve (labour £60 & part £108). Again in end of Jan 2012 the same light came and then the same garage replaced Lamda Sensor (£60 labour + £150 part). Now from yesterday that light came again. I don't know what to do now. Whether to go to same garage or different garage. Last time when he replaced the lamda sensor he said if problem comes again then they wont charge me labour cost. I have already spent £450 on this repair.Should I go to another garage and have it checked. how serious is this problem? If I leave it without repair do you think this light will go after sometime. Do you think if I do mechanical breakdown cover insurance will it cover this type of engine emission fault. Please advise. Is this an non repairable fault. Should I get rid of the car. I can't keep spending money on like this. Please help Read more

Thank you for the reply. Yes the car is running as usual. I checked the manual and it says that when you get this light take the car to the nearest garage urgently. I have been doing regular service. I dont do that many miles as well. What do you suggest.

I have owned this lovelly little motor since mid feb 2011 and picked her up with 28k on the clock. She is is just approaching 34k now.

About two months ago I detected smell of gear oil when parking and saw few drops coming off under tray. Closer exam revealed oil weeping from n/s diff oil seal which gradually got worse to such an extent I got her up on ramps and drained the original oil out to find that i had lost about a litre or so.... There is a filling station near where i live where if you pull in at night and you leave your sidelights on a voice comes over the tannoy asking ypu to turn them off. Presumably they won't switch on the pump until you comply.

I've never experienced this at any other garage and wondeed if this is a new thing that is beginning to come into being due to the obsession with H&S.... Read more

I suppose the thing is, if you fall over and break one of the lights, you'll set fire to the neighbourhood, with all the fumes swilling about. Could well happen if you'd been out for the night.

You've been watching too many 'Final Destination' movies.

Hello all

I've just been in an accident where I rear ended another car and mine looks unrepairable. I'm really scared I'm going to lose my licence as I've only been driving for a year and also worried at how much this will all cost me. I was hoping for some advice and possible outcomes from all this? I hope this doesn't seem too War & Peace...... Read more

And there should be NO requirement to mention the "Driver Alertness Course" on your next insurance proposal.

First thing in the morninig the engine engine coughs and splutters a few times before it fires up. The when you set off it tends judder a few times. Once running it is fine. All the pencil coils are ok and when i did a recent service one of the plugs was oiled up. This as been going on for a while now and have noticded that the same plug has been oiled up before. The engine has only done 39 thousand miles. There are no warning lights on and the car has passed its mot. Any clues? Chris Read more

Cloning number plates happens a lot. My daughter got an NIP similar to zeff. She swears she has not used that road for months, so we requested a picture. There was a Transit van with the same number as my daughters Golf!!! I photgraphed the Golf and photocopied the V5 and sent that off. Never heard another word. Also reported to local plod to cover ourselves from future incidents. I think the signwriting on zeffs van proves conclusively it was not your van. Follow Tony G's advice and photograph the vehicle at a similar angle to the police photograph and try to find the receipt for the signwriting. If you are in business you have to keep your accounts and reciepts for 6 years so your accountant may have it. Report it quickly and get a crime number, that should be some insurance against future problems. Let us know how you get on. Good luck. Concrete

I don't know why there doesn't seem to be any information about economic write-offs on the Internet - I have really searched and found no help whatsoever.

My car was a Cat C economic write off and it has now passed its VIC and MOT. What else do I need to do so that I can get it insured and where I can legally drive it on the road, please?... Read more

Some years ago I took a car battery back to Halfords with the receipt and the in time guarentee and was told by the manager that a) I had to buy a new one and b) it would be returned to the manufacturer and my money refunded if it was faulty. My reply was "come with me sunshine and read that notice on the wall. Out load!" He read "no quibble guarentee" and was told he was "quibbling" and I intended staying in his shop until he came to a different conclusion. He handed me a new battery and I insisted I be given a new gaurentee! I resolved then NOT to be fobbed off in future.

Today, same story up to b) they tested it with their standard green tester and told me there was nothing wrong with it and it was my alternator not charging it or charging too much. Figures given were under 12 volt or over 14.5 ( which I said was far too high)and I would have to bring vechicle in for a test. This showed battery at 12 point something, with engine running13.6 and with "everything" on the same 13.6. I was now told there was no manufacture's fault and nothing could be done as it was over a year old. They were told that as it was not holding a charge it was not performing as a car battery should etc as per "sales of goods act" Result but with same guarentee running out as on old battery. Why do they try it on???? Read more

Never understood why someone would buy a battery from Halfords - unless it was a distress purchase. Halfords advertising and large high street/retail park premises have to be paid for by someone. A local factor will supply one of equal or better quality cheaper, usually from functional premises on an industrial estate.

Halfords know their market. Have a look in the car park - it's chavland.
