So, here we have dozens of motors parked at night, without lights, along an unlit, national speed limit dual carriageway. So bad is the problem the boys in blue get the (trunk) road closed!
Fair enough, but why were no fixed penalty tickets issued? And why did the area have to suffer serious congestion for hours after the vehicles causing the problem had departed. ... Read more
Had an e-mail from the fair fuel price peoiple who reckon that the planned increases in fuel duty in January and August will increase the cost of fuel ''by 33p a gallon'' don't know if this is scaremongering or if there is some truth here. I worry for young familes who are struggling already with higher prices on heating and food etc etc. Read more
Eek. I'm putting 70-ish litres in my tank and paying about £89 for it. I think the article means the average tank and clearly there are very different prices around the UK!
I cannot for the life of me remember the name of the Mazda sports model that has the rotary engine fitted and I was about to post a enquiry about the car to enquire if anyone had experience of running this model as a day to day car. You cannot help wondering if the engine is troublefree, when first introduced there was much talk of other manufacturers going along this route, however I am not aware of any others.... Read more
Like Paul says, it's a Mazda RX8 with 'suicide' doors. They are very cheap to buy as they get something like 18mpg anecdotally (have a friend with one) and have really high road tax so nobody wants them! The Mazda RX-7 used the W ankel rotary as well. The poor fuel comsumption comes from the engine shape I believe; they don't quite combust all the fuel properly, but Mazda have come up with ways round that in recent years.
I agree that they are nice looking and the W ankel engine is an interesting idea and certainly a talking point. ...
I was driving My van when something must of hit the oilcooler-punctured it and drained the oil. 1st thing I new was the oil light came on at about 60mph. I depressed clutch and waited recovery. Replaced oil cooler but engine REALLY noisey. Need a new engine but wondered how flexible I could be with alternatives. I know the peugot and fiat are same, but will anything else eg 2.2 or older engine fit. The year of mine is 53 It has only done 62K!!! but has the newer lights.
Any help appreciated. I had a mobile mechanic who started to strip the engine. He has taken bits off, but I havent seen him for 6 weeks! so repair by 3rd party pretty slim I would of thought.... Read more
Thanks all frustrating which way to turn, quote is 400ish for 3rd party to remove and put in so going to do this and send for a quote from a re-builder. 1000 quid hopefully will get a lot of parts but at least I know the engines history. Worse case its a new one- thanks for the heads up on the sellers!
I am in need of advice please. My 406 has just been written off cat c.
If I buy the car back from the insurance company. What do I need to to do to get it legal & back on the road. I have done a few internet searches but I am still confused. I know I would need to get a vic check done by vosa, but what else do I need to do to get it back on the road. Does it need to be re mot'd ?? or is there another inspection it needs to go through.???... Read more
Hi,John,
The first thing I would do is try to work out how much repairs and vic testing would cost for your car.
I think the 406 was last available new in 2004. Likely value for a good one today £1000.?
Perhaps it would make financial sense to take the insurance payout and find a low mileage replacement.

Cheers for that Doc.Contacted Ford dealer today. They confirmed that this built in audio does not require a code. Hence none in handbook pack. Saved me a few quid.;-)
Hello All,
Im looking at a low mileage (30k miles) 2008 one of these with the old 8v engine mated to a 6 speed autobox. I know its very old school technology from the engine viewpoint, but maybe thats in its favour.... Read more
I wouldn't hesitate to have the petrol to be honest. 4500 euro more!!!! - it's a no brainer! Sure, the mpi is old tech, but the 8v pulls nicely and it's a straightforward unit, no turbo, no direct injection, no piezo injectors et etc. it's all fixable off e bay - which matters to me as I will keep it 6 or 7 years. I did think about 3 year old diesel 1.9 tdi ( to avoid the DPF probs) but then there's no warranty cover and a single big bill will wipe any savings made. Also looked at the tsi options, possibly a bit more fuel economy but pay back still a couple of years for me, even on the 1.2. . And there are quite a few issues with them- not sure i would want to own one 4 years down the line until they're better proven. Good luck anyway.

My x-reg Citroen Synergie is completely gutless below 3,000rpm, above which it pulls nicely, but under that there's almost nothing there - really sloooow to accelerate.
I've heard of other people having lag problems traced back to something called a swirl or butterfly diaphragm (costing around £50 to replace), but our mechanic has diagnosed something wrong with the turbo, requiring a £600 recon replacement job.... Read more
The first think I would look for would be air leaks in the turbo piping.
I have been driving through specs controlled road works on the M1 M25 etc for a couple of years now and as I travel at 50 by my satnav; I am constantly passed by cars lorries vans and bikes who all seem to be unconcerned about these camera. Do they actually work? has anyone been done using them as evidence?
Another worrying development is the habit of HGV;s to travel in the middle lane of these road works, often undertaking traffic in the third lane.... Read more

I would have thought in the circumstances a breathyliser unit could have been well deployed in the close vicinity.
Quite out of order in my humble opinion.
Nick em!
PS
Yes I tink a road closure Order requires quite some forward notice.
