Mazda Rotary engine. - foxmoth

I cannot for the life of me remember the name of the Mazda sports model that has the rotary engine fitted and I was about to post a enquiry about the car to enquire if anyone had experience of running this model as a day to day car. You cannot help wondering if the engine is troublefree, when first introduced there was much talk of other manufacturers going along this route, however I am not aware of any others.

The Mazda ceratinly looks good and when one overtook me earlier this week it certainly displayed plenty of performance.

Anyone owned one care to post their thoughts?.

The engines were originally disappointing because of rapid tip wear, especially as they revved very high, but that was several decades ago.

MAZDA RX8.

AMAZING REAR DOOR DESIGN...

1.3 LITRE ENGINE... high emisions and poor mpg.

and still suffer from rotor tip ware....(its been mentioned on this website in past. months..)

Lady here at work had one....over 400/ year road tax...sold it and bought the turbo nutter 200+hp petrol mazda 3 instead.

and of course you'll never get tired of mates saying "i have a straight 4, or boxer engine...and you'll be able to boast about having a w***le" hmmmm grin.....

Like Paul says, it's a Mazda RX8 with 'suicide' doors. They are very cheap to buy as they get something like 18mpg anecdotally (have a friend with one) and have really high road tax so nobody wants them! The Mazda RX-7 used the W ankel rotary as well. The poor fuel comsumption comes from the engine shape I believe; they don't quite combust all the fuel properly, but Mazda have come up with ways round that in recent years.

I agree that they are nice looking and the W ankel engine is an interesting idea and certainly a talking point.

Mazda had a lot of success racing with these engines fitted; they're really light and have fewer parts than your standard piston-based engine. Good for small aeroplanes!

If you were mad enough to buy one i.e. didn't mind the running costs but had small capital outlay to buy the car, you could get yourself a handsome looking bargain.
