While on holiday I was talking about my W124 estate having a tighter turning circle than my Octavia. I couldn't really explain the reason, apart from the fact I believe fwd driving through the turning wheels tends to push them out and its to do with the steering geometry.

Can someone provide a definitive answer? And am I correct in thinking rwd cars tyres last longer? Is this for the same reason? Read more

"I think that it's probably more related to the design of the front end."

Yes, and also the thickness of the tyres. SWMBO used to have a Honda Civic 2.0 S, a very good car but with a turning circle which was much worse than the 1.6 which had skinnier tyres....

Can someone please confirm that the Suzuki Swift's automatic gearbox is unaltered in it's latest reincarnation ? I have owned an 09 reg model from new and am considering replacing it with a 1.2 sz4 model - and read of gearbox issues - I have had none such with my older model....Also, will I miss the extra 300cc ? The new 1.2 engine puts out 93bhp (what a 2 litre produced 30 years ago) - whereas my 1.5 produces approx 10 hp more

Suzuki are currently offering VAT free prices on all Swifts - so now appears to be a good time to change cars ? Read more

VW GOLF GE TDI PD 150 - 139,000 miles

I have just had the top half of my engine rebuilt as the Cam Shaft had worn. At the same time the garage changed the Head Gasket, Cambelt, and skimmed the head. They found when they test drove the car there was no power till 4,000 revs. All 4 injectors were
then changed. They then said everything was fine.

When I got the car back I found there was no pull/power till 2,000 rev. The car used to take off like a rocket in low revs as it had been remapped. Also in 6th gear around 70MPH the pull has reduced and so has top end speed.

Is there anything else that could need changing or could be at fault/damaged like delivery of air, fuel or engine management ect? The car had a remap about 5 years ago so could this be the problem after the rebuild?

The car also need 2 attempts to starts at the moment.

Have a read of this article, about the effects of tiny changes / adjustments to the cam timing on a PD motor.

Hello everyone. I've just bought a Corsa C 1.0L, and had this initial problem, the right electric window doesent work. It doesent work frome bouth commands (driver and passanger button). Any ideas? i checked the fuze box but the one responsible for el. windows is ok. Could be a snaped wire? Read more

1litregolfeater

Could be.

Is there some way the windows can get out of synch and need a reset? Maybe but don't think so....

Outside the remit of cars, but hopefully an answer can be supplied. We live in East Anglia, regularly visit our children in Sutton, Surrey, in our superb VW Transporter Van, registered in 2001. From Jan 2012 we shall not be able to do this, unless we pay up to £2,000 to have fitted whatever is needed to allow us to enter the LEZ, or pay £100 per day while in the LEZ. We are pensioners, we cannot afford to buy a new van, and will struggle to pay for whatever conversion needs to be done. Are there any solutions to this problem of which we are unaware, please? The VW dealer I use claim that VW only provide a warranty on shock absorbers for 6000 miles from new. No, that is not a typo that is genuinely a tenth of the normal mileage warranty.

Needless to say both my front shockers are leaking at 51K miles and 2.5 years old and VW have refused to replace them under warranty.... Read more

Does the German warranty exclude (or attempt to exclude!) defects at such an early age? Can imagine shock-absorber failures due to issues other than wear and tear! My German isn't good enough to be sure, and Google translation is rather aproximate, but I can't see anything as blatant as VAG UK, on the German language site.

Doors: The passenger door on my Peugeot 1007 won't open automatically and needs to be manually opened. The contacts have been sprayed with WD40 but to no avail. There is no problem with the driver's door which works fine. Seatbelts: An over-enthusiastic puppy has chewed the rear seatbelts!! Does anyone know how to fit them? There doesn't appear to be a haynes manual for this car .... or maybe there is - but we haven't come accross one yet. Read more

Car has intermitient starting problem.. Starter motor and battery fine. When it finally catches it runs llike a dream. No spluttering, stop starts etc. therefore unlikely air in fuel or dirty fuel problem. Have been told there may be a fault in sensor to fuel solenoid.? No warning lights, or black smoke etc.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Read more

Thanks for reply. Problem occurs warm or cold . Had battery checked and its showin 12.5 v (after it had been sittin all night) which i'm told is ok. F-in-law noticed that oil dip stick was vibratin against couple of wires and on a few occasions engine started when wires were moved but not every time. He is a retired heavy plant fitter but not too sure about this type of engine. He just feels that a sensor is shutting off fuel on occasion but no idea why. Any further views greatly appreciated.
