Hi all my little car has never gone wrong before in the past but now she is starting to play up with a passion!
Cold morning she will start first time revs upto 1500 then drops to 1100 rpm, once she warms up she sits at 1000/1100 rpm.... Read more
Hi, could the problem I have just be an electrical malfunction or is the gearbox finished? The car can drive normally in towns, out of towns when you get above 40/45 miles an hour it can start behaving erratically. When are you going up a hill and trying to keep at a steady 50, the revs go high, it comes out of gear and goes into safety mode. I stop the car, restart it and it drives off fine. Sometimes just before it fails the rev counter flickers. I took it four times to bmw garages who kept giving me the car back as all they did was stick it on a diagnostic machine and said there is no fault. After paying for the last inspection, it failed again 30 mins later and this time they say it needs a new gearbox and that is obviously not cheap. Before I agree to any work I just want to make sure that is actually the problem. Today the engine management light has come on too.
I've had the car from new, always been serviced at bmw garages with a full service history. It has done about 90,000 miles but I bought the car because I needed a reliable car to do that mileage, would never have bought it if that was considered to be a high mileage for a bmw. Got a letter from BMW Germany and bmw services here. Read more
Not the service I expected when I bought the car.
Indeed....

Run the car in re-circulate mode for a day and see if it reduces. Has the plenum chamber been cleaned and the bungs removed which they should not be, they should be cleaned only. This can cause engine compartment engine fumes to be drawn into the plenum chamber where the air it taken into A/C Unit. Check the flexi joint in the front of the exhaust. Regards Peter
Reading the demise of Saab on onther post got me thinking of names no longer with us. I remember on the radio years ago for you to salute if you saw an Armsrong Siddely. I can think of Simca... I had one....NSU...Lada. there must be so many. Read more
Yes, it was the low compression van engine they fitted in the Bond in a vain attempt to keep the front wheel on the ground.
It weighed nothing, you could lift the front by hand....
Can any one can help?

Hi quadrant,
are you talking from experience?...
Son is buying an Octavia 1.2 Tsi SE. It has 205/60 R15V tyres fitted as standard. The selection of replacement tyres available is very poor compared to the 205/55 R16V tyres fitted on the SE Plus or Elegance Models. In particular there are no major brand winter tyres and no reinforced options as well as being more expensive.
My question is that if he fits 205/60 R15H tyres, a much better selection becomes available, including reinforced (95 vs 91 load rating), but will his insurance (Direct Line) allow this? H ratings are good to 130mph and the car he will have has a top speed of 119mph, so I dont see why not.... Read more
>>>Also will fitting a reinforced tyre (with a load rating of 95 vs 91) have any adverse effect on handling etc.
Not that you'd notice. It will be a bit stiffer (sidewalls) so perhaps a little bit noisier at speed but that will depend on the make of tyre (check tyreyest dot com for comparatives for comfort, interior noise if concerned) and slightly better at shrugging off pot holes than a softer tyre.

Hi there I'm about to move to a hilltop village in the Chilterns. We've been advised to get a 4WD as it can get cut off in winter. Is this really necessary? Next question will be what should I get. Or can I get away with front wheel drive? Read more
I'd probably go with the winter tyres instead. Braking works on all 4 wheels anyway; 4WD might get you going a bit quicker but you'd need the grip from the appropriate tyres as well. I guess ground clearance is their main advantage.
Turn the ignition on for 30 seconds to prime filter via lift pump in tank, it will self bleed
Hardly a showstpper problem, but does anyone know where the daylight sensor for the automatic headlights is?
SWMBO's headlights stay on in the daytime with the switch in "auto", so either the sensor has failed or something is obscuring it. Read more
OK thanks - must be in there with the rain sensor for the wipers (yes even on a Micra).
