Look at it this way, from someone who is a former parts manager during these cars early life. You will get some service parts cheap, but if a coil goes, better to replace all of them because of cost of labour, some would say just replace the 1 that has gone, but basic question If you get a big repair are you prepared to burn £3700...

There are many very expensive faults lurking, just don't go into it eyes shut because it is a pretty car, (which it certainly is!)

It's a bit like going into a casino to play at the tables. If you walk in with an amount in cash you are prepared to lose knowing you will have a great time whilst it lasts, you're onto a winner; if you take in your cheque book expecting to win, then you will lose heavily.

Nothing wrong with what you want to buy as long as it is with your eyes wide open - ie you will love driving the car but it will likely cost you.

Absolute money pits stay well away unless you have lots of free time and money deep pockets. The only one worth considering is the later diesel even these can be a nightmare ,with plenty of other reliable cheap cars about why on earth would you want to chose one of these.

Lovely car i own one myself. Mine is a post-facelift (the facelift was in 04) 3.0 SE Auto on a 56 plate and ive not had any trouble with it. Early ones (99-01) did have a lot of problems but if they're still on the roads they've probably been fixed but a solid service history is vital. 3,7 sounds a bit much for what it is though but it may be old enough to avoid new tax bands (mine is £460 a year). Most of its well known problems have already been listed but i'd be looking at a post 04 model even if it is higher mileage personally.

Driving it is terrific, its extremely comfortable and quiet inside, i recently spent most of a day in it on a trip to Portsmouth and back and when i got back it was like i'd just popped to the shops. Autobox is very smooth, its got good power. Ive driven the 2.5 and i think its slightly lacking, get the 3.0 if possible. Its more economical than i was expecting, im getting about 27mpg out of it (properly verified, not computer) on average.

They are a risk, you may find yourself not being able to sell it on in a couple of years due to the rising cost of motoring so before you buy it make sure you're prepared to not see that 3,7 again.

Feel free to link us to the ad so we can have a look at it :)

Keep in mind an 03 plate will land it in VED band M (or L if its the 2.5).
