Using various terms I have searched the forum, but have been singularly unsuccessful.
I understand it is legally permissable to drive up to 15 yards off the edge of the Highway* to stop for a recreational purpose, such as having a picnic.
* I am unsure which term to use here, Highway, Road, Carriageway, or something else.... Read more
I bought a Ford Mondeo about 6 months ago from Ebay, and so far it's cost over £1000 in repairs. After about 4 months both rear bearings went within 2 weeks of each other, and then a month ago both front springs went within 2 days of each other!
I'm tempted to think its a bit of a lemon, but none of the faults above could really be temporarily fixed, especially as it took 4 months for any problems to come up.... Read more
The garage I took it to could not find any fault with it, so took it to a Bosch specialist, who actually trains Ford technicians, so is pretty much top of the tree. It was returned with a bridging wire fitted as he stated that there was a fault in the bridging loom, but after having it back a day the problem came back! It's charging ok, and from talking to him on the phone it can only be the ECU, as I've looked into the symptoms a bit more. Basically the red light will come on after about 20 seconds, and stay on; after about 10 miles, if you switch the ignition off then back on, the red light will stay off; it also stays off if you drive the car within 24 hours-ish of last driving it. As I work shifts and live in the middle of nowhere, it's got to be fixed, and on that basis is the ECU repairable, or simply a like for like replacement, for big bucks?
I've been going to replace the trusty FIAT estate for almost 2 years, but it just keeps going and going and going. With 330k (km) on the clock, my luck must eventually run out so I've decided a change is needed.
Mileage is likely to increase due to work commitments, and given the high second hand prices here in Spain I'm looking for a new car which will be my workhorse for the next five years, by which time it'll have 250-300,000km on the clock. An estate format is the most practical for both dogs and shopping, and of course mpg as I'll be spending more on fuel than the car. I'll want a mid-high range diesel for drivability - nothing underpowered as the mpg is rarely worse for the bigger diesel engines in any case.... Read more
Good luck with it Sid, and I'm sure you'll love the Superb when you get one. That's two out of three moderators with Skodas in the household - come on Boris, let's be having you!
We're looking to buy a used honda fr-v, and think that the diesel is probably the best for us, but can only really afford ones with 100k on the clock. Will we be being stupid if we buy one of these?
Absolutely not stupid at all on the basis of mileage alone. This engine will take miles and miles if properly looked after. And the rest of the car - well it's a honda.

Allegedly, there is a bit of a fiscal crisis on the go at the present time.
I would have thought that people might have been shying away, then, from making major purchases such as new cars and suchlike, and so, one might imagine, that garages would be having a hard time shifting metal, and might be correspondingly flexible in their approach to discounting, in order to clinch a sale?... It's threads like this that remind me why I buy cars the way I do -- buy as cheap as possible then keep until it's only worth slightly more than scrap. This way I don't have to deal with either side of the complaints raised here.
This is good in theory, but if you need a reliable car for long distance driving it doesn't stack up really, unless you like beeing stuck on the M6 150 miles from home ! My job depends on the ability of my car to often do 400 miles in a day and I would,nt want to do this in a car that was close to being scrap value !

I have a wheelchair adapted Partner Tepee which delivers the most awful ride to parrengers and driver alike. The suspension bottoms out on the slightest road surface imperfection and as for speed bumps.... I have to come to a dead stop and roll very carefully over them to prevent grounding out. I have been advised by a friend who owns a Fiat Doblo that he had the same problem which he overame with spring assistors. I am as mechanically minded as a goldfish, so would appreciate some further advice as the only info I have read about these assistors say that they can cause the springs to break. Any advice would be gratefully received. Thanks...... Read more
The spring assitors that are more prone to breaking the road springs are the rubber ring type that fit between the coils.
I have used the above in the past, not very good. I have also used air assisted shocks, excellent, and air assisted springs ( air ballon inside spring ) these are very good or air bags to fit on the bump stops. You can also buy secondary springs to fit inside springs that take the weight , these are very good as they dont spoil the ride height but in your case as the weight is permanent I would contact these people,...
Hi all,
I hope you can help me, I will try to explain my problem clearly. My knowledge isn't very best with cars but I am now trying to learn how to sort problems on my own as I can't afford to keep taking my car to the mechanic for every little issue.... Read more
I apologise for the bad description, Typing tired isn't a good mixture. The best way to explain it was that its a white soggy stuff, sorry for the lack of description I don't know how to word it.
I got home by letting it cool and drove again because I was a minute away from home. When I had to refill the tank it took 2 litres to do it. It has started to do it again when I went to work, it seems to increase in temperature more when I am in gears 1-3. When I am driving at 40+ in gear 4 -5 it seems to reduce the temperature....
Reading through various forums, am a member of several chevrolet forums and avidly read the mg rover forums, (can't quite face buying a "6" yet....)
How many of us are actually satisfied with our car once the first impressions wear off or we get the first scratch or bill?... Read more
I haven't much liked any of the 26 I have owned and am so disillusioned I will probably not buy any more. The only car I really liked was one provided by my company, an armoured Jeep.

Thanks Andy,I did check some of their old threads but looks like I will have to join and ask the members outright.Perhaps it`s such an easy job that nobody has bothered to comment, maybe I should just wing-it!

You will usually do better if you ask the question you want answering.
What you want to know is about Green Road legislation. It has very little to do with "stopping off the carriageway" which suggests a metalled and adopted road....
