Hello everyone

I have a golf gt tdi 130 bhp 02 plate... its done 106k... Automatic gearbox

Few months ago i coudn't put the gear into reverse, i switched off/on the car then it started working.

A week ago, i was driving normally, i stopped on the side of the road to reverse and it went back few yards but felt something has slipped and car just stooped and would not engage into reverse i switched off/on the car but reverse woudn't work...Now each time I put the car in reverse it feels like the engine gets pressure but and slowly tries to move back but its like in nuetral. its a 5 speed gear box all the rest of the gear works fine with no problem

Surprised you haven`t checked level, colour and smell of oil?You need this info to know which direction to head :) .If any of the above three checks reveal a large inconsistency, bearing in mind your symptoms, then you may need of a replacement service-exchange box.Sometimes you can top up the oil and get away with it;the fact you were on a steep gradient when poblem appeared might prove to be a lucky warning!

If these are all ok then find a cheap, reliable mechanic and ask for a quote(not estimate)to check the linkages. They should disconnect the main linkage and operate reverse independently. If it subsequently works ok then they should be able to make adjustments to/replace worn linkage components.

I have for some time been looking it to this clicking and have at last found the problem it is the lower ball joint is loose and this allows the drive sharft to move in and out witch is making the clicking sound also will give uneven tyre wear .

may be worth a try just cheak u cant turn the nut on the end my one i could turn with my fingers and the hole thing spun....

Hi all.

have heard the small missfire could be from the EGR valve sticking or the coilpack, still no EML when it jerks - any ideas before i buy both?

We had the MOT done on friday and it has failed on emissions!

They said they were 80% sure its the lamber sensor. They replaced it and it hasnt solved the problem.... Read more

I have owned the above car from new since 2005 and it has covered just over 35,000 miles and been serviced by an Independent Peugeot Garage. Within the last couple of weeks I find that on switching the engine off a continuing whirring noise emanates from the engine and lasts for 6 secs approx. The garage informs me that the fly wheel is at fault and that I can expect a repair of £800.What is your opinion

I did consider that but springs do not whirr and last 6 seconds this is why I asked if it winds down ot just stops. As you say it is strange that the garage diagnosed this as a DMF problem. Perhaps the garage were looking for the whirring but noticed the dreaded DMF rattle when turning off so there may be two faults and a communication problem. Regards Peter

Hi, anyone had experience wit this code on above car? read a few things about only using a genuine cat on the car as pattern ones dont work? engine light is on and will not turn off! this code is permanent, thanks in advance for any help. Read more

unthrottled

All 3 way cats work in pretty much the same way. You simply have to make a reasonable job of picking the right flow capacity for the engine. If the cat is known(!) to be good, look further upstream. Are the O2 sensors working (they are pretty durable)? There should be two-one upstream and one downstream of the cat.

After that, you need to investigate the MAF. I have to say though, the first thing I would do is get an MOT style emissions test down. The results are very useful for fault finding.

Hi everyone

My golf keeps cutting out when i slow or stop and is very lumpy when idling and sometimes also cuts out when idling i have replaced within the last month as follows spark plugs and leads, oil and filter, i cleaned the throttle butterfly, air mass meter, collant temp sender, and both lambda sensors (very expensive)... Take it to a VW indy and ask them to clean and recalibrate the throttle body. Needs to be done hot and takes about 10 mins. They can also check for any recorded faults at the same time. AFM's are problomatic on this model but so are coolant sensors and throttle bodies.

I've been looking around for a cheapish used car and earlier today viewed what seemed in all respects an excellent 2001 Avensis at a very good price... BUT when I looked at the dipstick (engine was hot) there was no oil showing at all! Owner looked genuinely shocked and admitted he hadn't checked the oil for 'a very long time'!

The very silly thing is, by that time I was already feeling so enthused that I proceeded to go on with the purchase anyway - though have only paid £150 deposit as yet. Now, with a cooler head, I'm feeling rather worried and thinking perhaps I should have run a mile... I could still pull out but with perhaps a £150 loss (the seller is a solicitor...!).... Read more

You'd have bought it if he topped up the oil seconds before you got there!

I have phoned various dealer ships and none of them have a clue, One salesman said chain- clearly trying to sell it, others said a belt- one said needs doing at 60k/4yrs other said 80k/ 4 years. I have looked under the bonnet and it clearly has a plastic cover around the timing area seems like a belt to me... Does anyone know for definite? Read more

MikeTorque

It's a belt, 100% certain.

Hi All,
I just got a text form a VW dealer I have used once to say my car needs an aircon srvice. I can't find anything about aircon services in the manual. It's an 09 at 35000 miles at the moment.

While this dealer is convenient I always go elswhere as they are overly expensive.

Any thoughts?

We have an 04 Passat we've owned from new, slightly over serviced but not by much, a 10 Fiat and a 10 Subaru and the Passat has the coldest aircon by some measure. The aircon hasn't been "serviced" or regassed but is used all year round.
