Selling private / cherished number plates - crjos

Can anyone suggest a good way of selling private number plates other than the usual dealers. The ideal would be to put them in an auction, but DVLA only sell their own plates and I haven't seen any regular auction houses doing a plate sale.

The plates have been valued by a few dealers at 7-10k but the only dealer to offer cash only offered 4k.

Thanks!

As Andy says,Ebay.

Maybe worth putting a reserve on for what it costs, although sometimes this puts the bidder off.Alternatively start off auction at 99p and if they are good numbers they`ll soon pick up,but put a proviso in your description saying advertised elsewhere, then you can pull the auction if no favourable response in bidding levels are forthcoming.

Also check out auction affiliated to Regtransfers, not always the best place to sell but often a good place to buy.Previously noticed people buying plates and sticking them back on,obtaining a tidy profit....but usual gamble.

Thanks for your replies. Both eBay and regtransfers seem to operate at the lower end of the market, which I suppose is unsurprising.

A question now is whether anyone else is interested in consigning plates to an auction (a real one like DVLA run rather than internet based)? I can't be the only one trying to raise a fair value from my plates.

Maybe we can start a revolution!

Like many businesses, a profit is being made.

Enquire of a plate selling dealer how much for a similar plate.

Then enquire the next day for a value of a very similar one you want to sell

Then see how much profit is to be made. However, they do spend a lot on advertising and paying retention fees of plates they can;t sell..

I sold a plate via a dealer many years ago and his profit margin was 50%!

Best to sell by other methods if possible.

you can advertise your plate on prideofplate.com for a modest £14.99. They will let you list until sold and will not take any commission or charge any fees.

You will have to manage the sale yourself but they will put your plate in front of a large audience and hopefully find you a buyer. They are available to help if you need it (although the process is relatively straight forward)

Hope this helps
