OK, this is a little odd, but I have my legitimate reasons:

1. Can you insure a car owned by someone else. If so does the "someone else" need to give authorisation?

2. Can 2 drivers be insured for the same vehicle, each having their own independent policy

Thanks, this is related to a separation / divorce situation. Read more

edit: In reply to Cliff

But also different risks.

The Drive other vehicles cover provided on a comprehensive policy usually has two key clauses - 1: third party risk only on the other vehicle, and 2: The other vehicle must be insured in its own right by someone else.

While in theory the cover of the vehicle and the driver are different things the reality is that policies which cover any driver at full risk on a given vehicle or any vehicle at full risk for a given driver are not commonly available and will be very expensive.

Last week whilst travelling on the M180 i past a parked police motorway car checking for speeding cars the old fashion way. I could not remember the the last time i saw this, aprt form 1986 when i got caught on my way to work for speeding. When was the last time anyone else saw an old fashion speed trap. Read more

I've often thought the M180 was the quietest motorway in the UK, but the most likely place to get nicked.

Hi Guys,
The problem we have is at 40 MPH there is a vibration through the car, not the steering wheel though. It happens in any gear at any revs, but always at 40 MPH, worse when the car is under load i.e. going up hill or fully loaded.

Any ideas what it could be or where to start looking?

Thanks, Dave

Thanks for your help/suggestions,

I'll start by swapping the wheels around to see if the vibration changes.

Sorry forgot to put the year, and now can't edit it, the year is 2004.

I got my new tryes and picked up a set of second hand powder coated wheels. I took them to my local garage and when they went to fit the valves one of the holes was a different diameter from the other 3! The valve holes should be about 12mm dia and one of the wheels the hole is approx 16mm dia. The garage said they only have one size of valve.
I am about to plod round the local tyre fitters and see if you can get a larger dia valve.

Does anyone know if you can get larger valves or suggest a solution?
I was told that some Vw have larger valve holes.
Only thing I could think of would be to fit a tube. Read more

Good luck with the powder coating, personally I detest it as it doesn't do what it says on the tin. A Plymouth wrought-iron company near Cattedown will only powder coat garden furniture if it is galvanised beforehand so I think that sums it up. As to the tubeless tyres, I am not a professional tyre fitter, I am a retired engineer and I find that a lot of tyre fitters are useless. The talk about the tube walking around the rim is IMHO baloney. Add talcum powder. Incidentally tubeless tyres are supposed to be fitted on safety rims. These are marked H2 for double hump although there are allegedly single hump H1 rims about that only have the safety hump on the outside. Without the hump potholes, roadworks or kerbing can cause the tyre to come off a non-hump rim. If you don't have a humped rim please fit a tube, trust me I'm an engineer. Alternatively keep it pumped up very hard, bear in mind that you are still living dangerously if you do this.

Whilst on the subject of wheels I'd like to mention a good dodge for curing leaky alloys. (1) Don't think that liberal amounts of tyre soap is the answer because it isn't! The real cure has to be done at home. (2) After removing the tyre and valve clean off all the flaking paint and black aluminium oxide and try to get down to shiny metal. The alloy now has to be primed with Special Metals Primer (etching primer). (3) After this has hardened, paint over the primer with "Smoothrite" and allow it to harden for at least a day if it is summer (in winter drying times are much much longer and artificial heat will be needed). OK the painting and drying may take a week but it will be worth it. (Putting paint directly onto alloy won't work properly as it will flake off just like the OEM paint job). As to the tyre, I use manicure clippers to clip off any "bobbles" in the tyre bead area. If the tyre bead has old paint or dirt stuck to it use glass-paper to sand it off. Once the bead looks as if it will make a good seal, soap it and fit it in the normal way (fit the valve first!) Done this way the tyre should stay hard for at least three months. Good luck!

evening folks, ive stripped the rear axle off my 1989 535 sport so i can go about replacing some of the bushes. whilst it's all removed ive took the diff out with thoughts to clean it up and paint it silver to make any future leak spotting easier. whilst ive got it on a bench if i rotate the front prop flange once per full rotation there is a noise, im quite sure it's a metallic noise (being pessimistic here, it could just be air bubbles popping in the oil), my first instinct is to remove the prop flange and check the inner gears for signs of breakage and run a magnet round to see if i can find any lose fragments. my question is does anyone have any idea to a possible cause of the noise? and secondly what is the torque figure for retightening the front prop flange nut?

cheers

They will only 'work' electrically when powered, but they are still fundamentally mechanical, which why you can here them with no power.

Sorry for off-topic post, but I just had to mention that Honest John just won the 5.35 at Aintree. :-)

14-1, I couldn't resist backing it, so cheers Honest John!

Given the way nanny has taken over the roads, I think one horse-power on some good turf is the best way to enjoy some speed these days, apart from a track-day. My old grey mare is still in fine heart!

I have just bought a 1.9 JTD Fiat Doblo and everything thing is in great condition except for a baffling technical problem. I have just stripped all the brakes down and checked the pads. The sensors have been removed from the front pads. The fluid level was slightly high, but I took a little out to try and solve my problem.

The problem occurs when I do a hard right hand turn, my handbrake / hydraulic clutch light comes on, even without braking or using the clutch. After driving straight for a moment, the light will go off.

The brake fluid reservoir is shared with the hydraulic clutch, according to the hand book.

Any idea what is causing this???

Common fault with these. We have 2 doblo's and have had this problem. The mesh is too fine and blocks easily.

Have you noticed every time a replacement model comes out its bigger than the model before, no problem there but there doesn't seem to be any more room for passengers.

Not pointing any fingers, most of the mainstream makers are the same.

Is the new mondeo any more roomy than sierra or mondeo 1?
Vectra any more so than cavalier 2?
407 over 405.
C5 over xantia.
Primera over bluebird. etc etc.

I've given the family type saloons as examples as i'm really looking at the rear leg room, the boot on many of the new vehicles is huge, and if the rear window didn't have come down at such a stylish angle, the rear seat could have gone back at least 6" on many models or even have been adjustable like some mpv's.

But the newer cars just seem so massive now with so little increase in internal space, or is it just me? Read more

But I bet you'd be struggling to get more interior space than the Maxi / Austin 1800 - even the Austin 1100 - masses of rear legroom to which every BMW owner can only aspire.

Last time I was booked for speeding ( a few MPH over thirty on a newly restricted road between villages about 8 yrs ago) I sat in the car, was cautioned and given the lecture which I took `respectfully`.

There was a visible relaxation in the officers as I was then allowed to speak and was, in effect unchallenging and apologetic.

Some conversation followed, but as I was about to leave the car ( this is the point of the post) then I was asked a very oblique, well crafted semi question, which if discussed would have revealed that i was no `virgin` in the past speeding dept.

So what was that about with the formal interview over and some light hearted chat from the officers after that.
I knew I was still under caution though and said nothing and it was not persued.

It felt like a well oiled trap to get me to say I had been there before, but surely not?

I was also recently stopped on the M53 for speeding, which I was. When I got into the patrol car I was asked why I thought I was stopped, " Speeding" was my reply, " How fast he quipped", Oh 85ish I replied. "Try 5mph short of a ban" was his retort, "yes your probably right" I returned.
BIB " Have you got a clean license"
ME " Yes"
BIB " Would you like to keep it that way"

> If gullible consumers stop using 'fabric conditioner' altogether...

I was wondering when someone would suggest this. I used to use it, then about ten years ago, I ran out and just washed my clothes without it. There was no noticeable difference and I haven't bought the stuff since. Some things - notably towels - come up much better for not using conditioner.
I've also found that one Persil tablet in the machine (even in a hardish-water area) works just as well as the two the box tells you to use.

Here's another one: I've found recently that I drink less beer and more whisky. I hadn't thought of it as an eco-statement, but...

My sympathies, of course, go to the lorry drivers I'm depriving through these economies - although I've probably done my bit to make up for them in other areas.
