Honda certified their Stratified combustion vehicle with the EPA in California for many years and advertized that fact. What they did not advertize was the fact they were not offered for sale to the public.
hi, could anybody tell me why there is uneven wear on my rear brake shoes . passenger side shoes are showing about 4mm of wear left on both shoes but the drivers side are down to the metal but only on the one shoe. ive been to my local fast fit centre who says this isnt normal but doesnt know why!.vehicle has done 51k and the old pads were ferrodo Read more
OK, I'll stick my head above the paprapet:
The side with one shoe down to metal. Would this be the 'leading' shoe? In which case, it will wear quicker than the 'trailing' shoe.
The side that's not so worn. Sticking piston?
When I slow down approaching a roundabout / junction, the revs drop to below 500, battery light comes on and I have to give it a little gas to stop it cutting out - battery seems fine, not low on fuel - engine management light does not come on. Why the drop in revs? Any ideas anyone? Read more
I had the same problem on a 1996 Golf. The throttle body was gummed up. Cleaned it with a kitchen wipe. Sorted, so worth a try.
I'm going into semi-retirement soon, and the boss has very generously allowed me to keep my company car, a Feb 06 VW Passat SE diesel with the 1.9 engine.
It's a brilliant car, which as done 37,000 miles in the past two years, and which gives me up to 55mpg on a run.
However, I'm conscious of the fact that servicing and repairs are expensive, and as I'll be doing much reduced mileage (a run to the supermarket once a week and occasional outings) I'm wondering if it will pay me to sell the car and buy something that will cost me less in the long run and put the sale/purchase balance towards my retirement fund.
I'm a complete ignoramus on cars, but John has often referred in complimentary fashion to the new Panda with the 1.3 multijet engine. I have very fond memories of driving an old Panda in years gone by, and I know it's a completely different car, but does anyone have any observations?
Or would I be better of just spending a couple of thousand on a Mondeo, insuring it for third party only and running it into the ground? Read more
Personally, id look around and see what the majority of older owners drive, they usually go for the most sensible choices.
If your not doing many miles, then no diesel is really worth the extra you pay.
Have you thought about a Daihatsu Sirion? The 1.0 has emissions below 120' and as I understand it, they are likely to be slapping a 5 year warranty on it aswell as they have with the Subaru version.
An awful lot of Daihatsu owners are older because its a very dependable, cheap to run choice which suits retirement and lower incomes. Worth a look if nothing else.
The story is here - really surprised!

You nicked that off the late great Les Dawson ---- he'd be happy to hear it re-told though !
Any ideas please:
A while ago, I tried (by mistake) to start the car in gear. The car gave a lurch and the Hazard lights came on.
Since then the remote locking has not worked.
Both myself and Citroen have been through the key-reset procedure to no avail. it looks as though the car has turned the remote facility off completely.
I feel that it is a software problem somewhere. Cirtoen say that it MAY be an aerial or an ECU problem., and have quoted me around £150 for the ECU and a further £100 for fitting.
It seems to me that £250 is a very high price to pay for something that may not solve the problem. and that it cannot the "the ECU" as I would expect the Engine Control unit to be about £300.
Are there a multitude of 'ECIs' on the car? Does the price sound right?
I have heard of a 'BSI' unit - any connection.
So does anyone know how I can turn my remote locking on again for a reasonable price. - The remote fob is definitely working properly.
many thanks
Found year & engine info via a forum search. Good job I'm in a generous mood. I could have just as easily deleted this as per mention in the 2 sticky posts

The remote locking on my Xsara did this after a fast-fit monkey whipped one of the battery leads off without giving the BSI time to shut down properly. I took it to a dealer who plugged it into their computer and reset something in the BSI, its been fine since. Only snag was they needed the code card which was missing when I bought the car so they had to get the code from Citroen for £15. Total cost was about £60.
hello
This one is a real headache. It started a few weeks ago, when driving if i was to floor the accelerator there would be a slight miss fire, it was more apparent when slowing down then flooring it. So i took it to the garage they said it was the air flow sensor pipe charged me £110, only for it to be even worse. Now when im even in neutral and just floor it the engine will nearly cut out and then kick in but more severe than before, this happens in any gear that i want quick acceleration.
Another garage has looked at it that has all the diagnostic equipment, and according to the computers the car is running sound. So the next thing is he is going to do is call a Auto electrician. Any ideas please. Read more
No 1 oxygen sensor was probably sooted solid from the rubbish MAF's over-fuelling.
Still; glad to hear it's fixed - at a price....
My 405 TD needs the primer bulb pumping before starting. It then fires after quite a lot of cranking. Within a mile, it starts to judder, and dies, often if idling/at low revs. Prime the bulb, and it will go again. If kept at cruising revs it seems to be better, and runs OK. The probelm seems to be far worse when the engine is completely cold.
When priming you can hear the fuel flowing into the filter chamber. The filter was changed three days ago, and has made no difference.
It is running on veg oil/diesel, mixed, but this problem has only recently occurred, after several months of veg oil use. It has a Bosch injector pump, which should tolerate veg oil.
My gut feel is that the injector pump is partly knackered, but do BRers have other ideas? Read more
Gives about 8 miles to the litre driven briskly ...
Even driven briskly, that's pretty terrible - 36mpg from a PSA diesel? Is veg-oil a particularly poor fuel?
I am wanting to have Powerflex polyurethane bushes fitted on my Ford Ka, and have been told that is necessary to remove the axles in order to do so.
I was surprised to hear this. Is it really true? Read more
Thanks all.
I've had the work done, and must confess that I have not noticed any significant change in ride, handling, or noise. Ride may be a little firmer, but it is pretty marginal.
And does he give two hoots? No.
