hi, ive just bought a 2005 Renault scenic grand today, on the way home from the garage i noticed the computer said "check parking brake", i went straight back to the garage, and was told that when it went through its pre sale service the computer wasnt reset, and to drop it back for the day so they could reset it, i was just wondering if this was correct, as ive had a lot of problems with electronics on cars before,

appreciate anyones info,

I think you should be very wary. Scenic handbrakes are infamous. I've owned 3 Scenics, all MK 2. The cost of replacing these is significant. They are quite a complex item with their own ECU that communicates via the multiplexed network. At a guess I'd say the garage doesn't have the skill or tools or is unwilling to spend money to get this fixed. I'd ask a MOT station if such a fault light is a fail. After all it is part of the braking system. The car has a fault and should be fixed unless you bought it knowing it had this fault. My current Scenic occasionally throws up such a fault which means it doesn't auto apply the parking brake when turning the engine off and leaves the cooling fan running. Such faults can stop other seeminly unrelated systems working as they should.

Hi there, I have just recently bought this van. Now the problem i am haveing is im feeling a slight loss of power every now and then like diesel is blocked for 1 sec or so, but now it's also cutting out whilst driving (Car with spanner going through it sign lights up). It restarts right away and drives and the cutting out seems random.

Ive been and got the codes but the mechanic said he cant tell me what part it is exactly as its a new system and codes and not on the computer as of yet.

He has said 9 times out of 10 its the sencor on the engine but i have 2 on mine and he doesnt want to waste my cash by replaceing one of them and it being the other.

Dont know where else to go to get these codes read except Vauxhall who seem to hold these codes back till they are abit older to have a monoply on the repairing at 160 pounds an hour.

The codes are as follows,

P1191 - Rail pressure to low

P1093 - Fuel system malfunction

P1191 - Rail Pressure range/performance

ty in advance.

Whilst out and about tonight, the rather over-dramatic bleep and bright orange light on the dash of my 2003 Polo 1.2 (12 valve, 64 bhp) brought the need to refill with petrol to mind.

The gauge shows approx. 1/8 of a tank remains, which by my calculations this should mean at least 40-50 miles left. Obviously it would be better to fill up ASAP, but I wondered in an emergency, how much further would I have left?

I wondered if anyone out there has a posher 1.2 Polo than mine fitted with the trip computer, and if so what is usually left showing as the range at the point of the dreaded bleep?

Thanks, Tom. Read more

I've had a a petrol can, but have never used it in the many years I've owned it. However it's built to survive most incidents...:-)

In late June I rented a new Peugeot Boxer to move the contents of a flat from Oxford back to North Yorkshire. I am not sure of the exact model, but it was mid length with a high roof, and, most importantly, a 6 speed box. Average consumption was 39mpg, which considering the duration (and speed) of motorway use was amazing. Light years ahead of my previous LWB HiRoof Transporter, which, admittedly, was a '97 model. Very refined with subdued wind, road and engine noise, plus a decent stereo, and was more than happy in the overtaking lane....

Bit of a retro question this but where has Duckhams oils gone to ? I know they belong to an era of TR7's and Rover SD1's etc . Can't find anything on the net about them.

I note they are sold by very few (handfull) on retailers who are specialist in Rover parts etc

Is a brand from the 70's like Mobil 1 from the early 90's that will pass into history ? Read more

Your so right Steve there are and were far better oils available.

Hi.

The Exhaust System Warning Light has lit up. I'm a little suspicious as it's happened at the same time that the automated warning for the next ('Long Life' at ~60,000) service and will be 3 years old soon (i.e. first MOT).

The warning light is NOT flashing and there's is no misfiring so I'm assuming there is no danger of damaging the Cat (which was replaced under warranty in January).

1) Am I safe to wait until the next scheduled service is 1,200 miles/4 weeks?
2) Is there a probability that it's a false warning? e.g. faulty Lambda probe.
3) Can the Warning Light only be reset electronically (garage/dealer) or would it go out if (only) the problem itself is rectified?

I can't think of any related problems with the car. I've had it from 6 months old with 5,000 on the clock and am at 58,889 and nearly 3 years old. Previous service dealer as always and 'Long Life' last October at 41,255 miles.

Cheers,
Matt. Read more

Whatever it was, the Dealer has phoned to say it's all been done under Warranty. I'll make sure I get my Long Life Guarantee stamp in the Service Book!

The stereo's 12v switched circuit is only reading 0.2v as oposed to 12v and the stereo will not switch on.

1. Does anyone have a diagram of the fuse layout in the fuse box so i can double check the fuse?
2. Does anyone have an idea what could have caused this if the fuse looks ok?

Many Thanks,

This could be an ignition switch problem. With ignition switched on ,try pushing the key in gently towards the lock to see if the power to the radio can be restored.hth

I've had this limp mode (Turbo?) problem on my Ford Galaxy 1.9tdi for over 12 Months now intermittently, had car from new only done 22k miles genuine, Ford Garage originally said suspect Turbo fault (didn't trust them), so i let my local Diesel specilist have it to sort out the problem.

First time they had car they said wastegate was sticking and underboosting said should be o.k. now, but it wasn't.

They had car again said now stripped turbo to inspect, free tight vane assembly, re assemble and test, said again should be o.k. but still has the same problem goes in limp mode (lack of power) mainly occurs going up hills and gradients.

Returned to so called diesel specialists for a third time, there report as follows, interrogate EDC System (KTS 650), boost pressure above limit, remove belly plate, check turbo wastegate, remove supply + fit 1 boost converter, re-assemble, start clear fault road test no fault recorded.

On return to me, the fault does not happen as often but it's still there, and it's a dangerous fault to have especially when overtaking!, the last time it happened i only turned the air con. on and the car went straight into limp mode, pulled up switched off and back on again fault cleared, yes VW Sharran rubbish, garrett turbo i think, are these garages missing the obvious!, surely turbo faults at less than 20k are not right.

To add from one of the above visits to my so called diesel specialist, the car seemed to acquire a whirring noise on revving engine.

Hi i have just had the same problem its been in to be tested and the only thing they came up with was a worn bearing in the turbo, i have a AA 5 star cover and when the repor went back to them they said its not coverd they say its wear and tear the garage wants £850 to replace the turbo but will it cure the problem of loss of power mine is the same turbo cuts out turn off and restart and its back, how could that be a turbo fault its no joke when your 68 just cant get into my head that if you turn it off and re-start it runs again when the turbo is a macanical ??

Hi all,

I don't have a car at the moment as my last one died about 2 months ago.

My car insurance ran out shortly afterwards so I had no reason to renew it but now, as I am about to go car-hunting, I don't know where I stand with regard to having insurance to test drive any cars that I look at?

Some people have told me that any test drive that you do from a new/used car dealer means you are covered by the dealer's insurance but, um, that sounds more like an old wives tale than legal reality?

So what do you do if you do not have a car yourself, and hence no car insurance, but you wish to go and test drive some cars?

Thanks for any advice,

I've never filled out a form for test drive

It depends on dealer. In my town, only Toyota asked me to sign a form with £500 excess.
Others (Honda/Suzuki/Kia/Ford/Nissan/Hyundai) didn't ask me to sign on anything before test drive, although some did take photocopy of my license.
