I'm looking to buy a used Jaguar XK8. I saw one that I liked in Birmingham so I travelled from Cheshire to view it.
Mechanically & structurally it seemed perfect: just what I wanted! All the documentation seemed to be in perfect order. The last service stamp was from a local Main Dealer: I rang the dealer up and they confirmed that they had in deed serviced this vehicle and, when asked, did not mention any issues.
The Registration document was not in the name of the seller. The seller described himself as a Trader, trading from home. The seller said it was HPI clear but did not have any documentation to proove this.
At the end of the viewing, I said that I would definitely buy the car subject to my own HPI Check and would pay cash the next day. I did not leave a deposit.
When I got home, I carried out an on-line HPI Check; Shock Horror: It came up as having outstanding finance!
I contacted the seller about this who continued to maintain that there was no outstanding finance on it! Over the next 2 days there was numerous phone calls between me, the seller, HPI and Lombard Business Finance. Lombard Business Finance stated that the car was subject to 'Unit Stocking' finance from them; but the next day Lombard declared to me that this had now been cleared and that they now had no interest in car.
However, this did not show up on the repeat HPI Check - still listed as outstanding finance from Lombard. Both Lombard and the seller agreed that it was possible that it was just a matter of waiting for the information to go from Lombard to HPI and the computer system up-dating; no amount of persuasion from me succeeded in speeding this process up!
I am very interested in this car because it is the best bargain I have seen so far.
My question is: If the HPI Check finally comes up clear, is there anything else that could go wrong on the legal ownership side?
The car is publicly advertised (with its number plate visible) and parked just off a busy street.

I have a 2.0 hdi 406, suddenly began struggling to engage in gear, garage said new clutch, was fitted today. but now the engine management light stays on with the message appearing on the onboard display "Engine Anti Pollution System Defective". The garage checked the car over & over to see if any sensor/cable was left unplugged but everything was fine. They dont have a diagnostic machine so cant diagnose the code. Mechanic thinks its becase of replacing the clutch and the code just needs re-setting or clearing from ECU but he hasnt equipment. Gonna take it to a diagnostic place on Monday but any clues here to what it might be? Read more
If its an 8 valve 2.0 Hdi it doesn't have a DPF.
Was in B&Q last night. Noticed a white C-class estate with serious rust on both driver's side wheel arches. Glanced at other side as I pulled away, and nearside front wheel arch was just as bad.
Is this common? I know I've seen rusty arches on late 90's E-class Mercs, but on a '52 plate? It's only 6 years old.
Anyone else seen this? Read more

Not sure if the following information will help or not?

Recently i have noticed power loss when accelerating. Particularly noticable uphill where i need to change down to get up the hill, whereas i used to be able to steam past others before!!
Nothing seens to have happened, no new engine noise etc, except it sounds like the fan (that blows air into the car) gets louder as i accelerate, which it did not before. the fan noise is direcly related to acceleration.
Any ideas? Much appreciated before i take it to a garage.
Thanks

Hi can you tell me if you've found your prob and what it was as my '54 mondeo ghia 2.0 tdci is beginning to do the same thing and it would help if i know where to begin looking. Cheers
AIUI, the law allows one to carry more adult passengers than there are seat belts, as long as the car isn't overloaded. Children up to 135cm high must use "child restraints", e.g. a booster seat and belt, though, so the number one may carry is limited by the number of seat belts.
One could legitimately carry in a car two adults and four children, as long as the children were secured by belts in booster seats, and the extra adult did not cause overloading of the car.
Is this the case? Read more
swmbo has a car with only two seatbelts for the back seat not three
the insurance specifies only allowed to carry 4 passengers, the 2 up front and 2 at back
so even if it were legal to carry 3 in back, one with no belt, then she wouldnt be insured
making it illegal anyways
Morning all,
The police in Calais were checking vehicles this weekend.
As well as checking for deflectors they also asked to see that you have all the correct safety equipment.
Headlight deflectors. Are there any info sites, links etc., available that shows you how to make these deflectors yourself and where to correctly place them on the headlight?
I saw several MG cars with plain black tape applied to the headlight units and this is why I am asking.
Thanks,

Cheers Michael. It`s here, look forward reading of your trip.

As I am going to have to transport SWMBO, with leg in plaster, a considerable distance, it would be better if she can sit in the rear with her legup.
To do this with effective seatbelt restraint will require the removal of the front seat. Sitting across the back seat with a seatbelt is neither comfortable or safe.
What problems are likely to occur if the seat sensor and (side) airbag connectors are disconnected? I assume it would be wise to disarm the the front n/s airbag if this is possible.
Will the Airbag control module try to disarm the whole system?

Am I alone in thinking that a 'system' that disables the whole airbag system, purely because of detected fault of only one part of the 'system', potentially a bad design. We all know that seat connectors have history of coming apart, so why not design a system that only disables the defective part?

A 4x4 has been branded 'inherently dangerous' by a coroner.
The comment came at an inquest into the deaths of two women who were killed when their Japanese-made Mitsubishi Delica 4x4 crashed into the central reservation of the M6.
The Kendal hearing was told the vehicle was designed for inner-city use and not motorways.
If this is really true how did this vehicle get imported and released for use? I was not aware that there are or could be rules to say that vehicles are urban use only. Common sense sugests that going up a motorway in a G-Whiz or similar small/slow vehicle might not be too clever but it isn't illegal.

The Range Rover Classic (1970-94) was a popular vehicle used by traffic police on many motorways. However a top gear demonstration in the 90's showed how easy it was to flip it over if sharp steering inputs were made at speed. As others have said its often how a vehicle is driven that determines its behaviour (1980's 911's wet roundabout too much power= exceeds the drivers talent = spin and crash)
I bought a 54 plated S-Type Diesel Auto SE in Jan 07 this was an early 50th Birthday present to me! The car was bought with 44,655 miles on it for around £20K. I?ve just sold it after 18 odd months & thought the overall experience maybe of interest to others.
The car came from a main dealer, who were very pleasant to deal with. The car had only just arrived when we first saw it & I was advised it would be thoroughly prepped before we collected. On collection we found a variety of chips in various areas predominately the doors & a small dent in the bootlid! The valeting job wasn?t the best I?d ever seen either. The various paint issues were dealt with a little while later & while it was in I had a Jaguar Audio Connect module installed. This gives iPod, USB key & 2 x phono connections into the head unit. This unit has had a 2gB USB key plugged in for all the time I?ve had the car & makes long journey?s much more relaxing with around 600 tracks on it. I average around 22-23K a year so it soon started to rack up mileage.
Everyone who rode in it from customers, to friends & colleagues all loved it. With everyone amazed it was a diesel.
Servicing, this is due every 15K so the first service came up at the 60K mark & this included a brake fluid change. Total was £500. At this service I reported a squawk noise when in full throttle kickdown & this was dealt with by an additive in the gearbox. The final service in my hands was at 76K and was a wallet thumping £1080! As it wasn?t just a service but rear brakes (discs & pads), a suspension bush, wipers, a hose on the intercooler & a couple of other minor things. Whilst being serviced they loaned me a 2.2D X-Type Auto as I?d wondered if that was a reasonable down size option, although all my friends loved it we didn?t & it just didn?t feel like the S. The only other item to fail was the heater valve which meant the heating was at full hot all the time, this was fixed in 90minutes whilst I waited under warranty. Tyres were needed all round at just under 60K and these were Pirelli Powergys at £130 each fitted.
The only other trauma was in France I managed to fill it with unleaded (badly marked pump is my excuse!) & I then drove it 35-40miles. It sounded unhappy so I investigated & doing the sniff test found what I?d done. Phoned Jaguar Assist & they had someone out in 90 minutes, he took me to Calais where Jaguar Assist had got me a booking (I was on the tunnel originally) & they had me collected in Dover & taken home all at no cost. In the morning I collected our jerrycans & by ppulling a pipe off the diesel filter drained the tank completely & then refilled with diesel. A local factors had a filter in stock & it started after some cranking & has never seemed to be any the worse for it!
Fuel consumption whilst we?ve had it has always hovered around the 35MPG mark, although if you fill it when hot & do a reasonable run up say the A1M then you?ll see 43MPG or so on the trip. It?s been run 95% on Shell V Power although it makes zero difference to the consumption it does make it run a little smoother & since I also get fuel vouchers every 2-3 months it?s worthwhile.
So it?s sold back to the dealer it came from, they valued it as a buy in with 84K miles at £7K but actually gave me £10K for it against another S So to overall costs, including 4 x tyres, insurance, finance costs It has cost 29 pence per mile if you use the £10K valuation or 37 PPM if you use £7K. I loved it to bits & it has to be the first car I?ve EVER owned where I was happy to buy the same again & have just done so (details later!)

Yup I just use the Loyalty card, I don't pay for fuel & use loads, doing 23K PA so V Power gives double points most the time. The fuel vouchers normally top up what I need to put in the Porsche, which only does 3K max!

That would be my view too.
Consider the alternative scenario: that you do your HPI check, it comes back clear and THEN the trader gets a loan against his stock item. My goodness, that's really worrying.
Except... the last time I bought a car I did a basic HPI check on it (£3.95 or whatever it cost me) imagining that it provided some sort of insurance... NO! If you buy a car from a dealer, and he signs a declaration that it is free of outstanding finance THEN the finance company apparently cannot come after you.
What can I say: I bought my lovely Legacy in January slightly above Glass's "poor" trade-in price from just such a trader: no trade plates, no licence disc, just a FANTASTIC price. (And a mate with a petrol station and a debit card machine which made the "cash" bit much easier.) And the bits of string and tape holding it together are still holding it together and haven't yet revealed themselves...
