In this morning's Telegraph there's a review of the new Renault Grand Modus.
As is often the case the writer goes on for more than half the article about something else, in this case the consumption of diesels against the Prius. When he gets to the car he likes it but doesn't say what mpg he got. He quotes the theoretical maximum from the official figures. The interior shot accompanying the article is nothing like the car in my local dealers and looks like an earlier model. There must be alot to say about the car, so why not say it and give people a decent review? Read more
Hi, wanted to get some extra BHP on my Zafira. Had it imported from Holland in Dec 02 from new. Feels a little underpowered. Had a chap round but he said it did not have a Bosch ECU so he could not do it! Any ideas? Read more
Alright masterjee
I just had my 1.9 litre alfa remapped at red dot racing in watford loadsa extra torque and hp now, and fuel consumption seems to have improved.
you can find their details on the web.

Having sorted out the indicators on my car I'm now having intermittent starting probs.Every now and again(and up till now its only been the first start of the day)the starter motor spins but then stops spinning with a horrible screech/crunch,engine not starting.Engine always starts second time..up till now.Any clues, anyone? Is this a sign of impending starter failure, and does anyone know whether the replacement is a standard "remove cable, bolt off, bolt on, cable on"or something horribly complicated and home mechanic unfriendly?
And...does anyone know where I can get a manual for this model,as Haynes arent doing one yet?Not the owners handbook, which Ive already got but which only gives basic info.
Cheers in advance. Read more
Cheers, problem is only intermittent at present(hasnt happened today,as yet) but Ive priced a replacement unit just in case.
I have a 1996 ford fiesta 1.25 ghia zetec automatic and each time i rev the engine the rev meter doesn't never goes beyond 3000 and most times the car loses power even though i've got my foot right down on the accelerator, then all of a sudden it picks up again. the car has been serviced and i have added injector cleaner but still the problem persist. i will appreciate it if anyone has a similar problem on here and how did you deal with it. Thanks

Yep another vote here for fuel filter or knackered cat.
The fuel filter is under the back near the fuel tank.
Just a quick note to offer thanks to the authors of this site for the selling advice which they provide (free of charge.)
I followed it to the letter to sell my A6 and yesterday received a cash deposit and a draft for the balance, together totalling the full price I asked. Car to be released by me only on receipt of irrevocable cleared funds.
And a note of irony - on the very day I contracted to sell an A6 Quattro we got six inches of snow. Read more
1996/97 2.0ltr can anyone tell me how to determine the if the car is OBD1 or OBD2 compliment. It is fitted with a 16 pin socket.

It's neither; both are US-only - despite what the socket cover says.
Volvo-specific protocol; no DIY readers for these available until 2000/01.
If you were driving 15,000 miles a year, travelling, primarily, at traffic-free times on A roads and motorways, would you plump for a petrol or diesel engine? My choices are a 1.5 or 1.7 petrol or a 2.0 diesel, with automatic transmission, in a 2 year old Mercedes A Class.

Their reliabilty and repair costs are so awful;
The latest model is considered a *lot* better than the previous one.
They're available new on pretty good PCP deals from MB.
One thing you could do if buying a 2-3yr old one is to buy Mercedes ServicePlus. This covers pretty well all service and repair bills until the car is 6yrs old (120K miles max). It shouldn't be too expensive for an A Class.
My S reg. Corsa 1 litre will not run smoothly. It doesn't idle at 1500rpm - it runs from 1000 to 2000. If you try to hold the revs. at 2000, it runs from 1500 to 2500. This carries on throughout the rev range. I have changed the stepper motor and throttle position sensor but this has not made any difference.Has anyone come across this? Any suggestions? Read more
Dave, thats the point, it does'nt idle.
Hi
I am hoping someone is going to be able to help me. I bought my c3 1.4 sx from new in November 04. It only has 16000 miles on it but I seem to be plagued with problems.
While it was still under warranty it had many trips to the dealers because the engine light kept coming on only to be told there was nothing wrong with the car and the light still being on. It still continues to do this and will keep coming on then going off a couple of days later.
Secondly there has been problems with its acceleration. I can put my foot down to the floor and get a maximum speed of 5 miles an hour. There seems to be no power in it at all but when I start it the next time it will start normally.
Thirdly there is this clicking noise which sounds like it inside the dash. It started off just doing it when I turn the engine on but now it does it in a kind of two tone clicking and sometimes it will do it continuously. Tried turning the air con off but this doesnt make any difference.
I am slowly losing confidence in this car and am seriously thinking of getting rid but i would love to know whats up or if anyone else has had this type of problem.
Thanks
Kaye

The C3 has to be the least reliable car I've owned since I started buying cars in 1971.
My C3 has the same symptoms as Kayes. The EWL comes on, the car usually goes into "limp home mode" and is downwrite dangerous to drive with as close to zero power as you can imagain. Sometimes the light comes on but drives normally.
Citroen UK just do not know how to diagnose this. They read the error codes, and say "looks like the coil" or "looks like the spark plugs" or "looks like a wiring problem" or "change the accelerator pedal and see if that fixes it".
The fault goes away for a few days, then sure as eggs, its back with the SAME symptoms. The parts replaced have had no impact on the problem.
Of course, Citroens strategy is to replace something and generate a bill. Then change something else... and generate a bill. They clearly do not have a clue how to troubleshoot problems like this.
I doubt that they will ever fix this (well, till even the wheel nuts have been replaced), so I'm starting legal action
I know one thing - I'll never EVER buy a citroen, even if they give them away with sugar puffs!
Which of those antiquemobiles were the best before they were given round styling in the 2000's?

Id say the 240 GLT estate. It is what Volvo was known for doing so well and the purest form of civilian tank building. There are still many around which says all you need to know about how well made it is.
The GLT had a reasonable turn of speed and leather if memory serves, so prob the best of the bunch.

Car reviews do have their uses, but helping you to decide whether it's the car for you isn't necessarily one of them.
Most people use reviews to either confirm their prejudices, or add to the bank of their own data. Rarely are they the decisive factor.
I'll give the Telegraph and the Sunday Times' Drive top marks for all-round entertainment (with a certain DT contributor offering unrivalled consumer info), Autocar and What Car as the best of the mags (though Car's website has its moments) and regional evenings newspaper motoring supplements giving you the best guide to what's on sale locally.
Why, though, do so many of them seem to rely on the 'combined' fuel consumption figure? Everyone in the industry knows that the figure most people are likely to get close to is in fact the urban figure.
