Hi all
please be gentle, not much of a poster :-)
Whilst driving home the other night the auxillary belt tensioner sheered off, causing the belt to come off the pulleys and hence no power steering. Theres never been a problem with the power steering before and no strange noises so would i have to change the whole unit or just the tensioner bit that fell off ? It looks like a complete unit though. And to get to it one of the pulleys is in the way of a bolt (typical). So would i have to take the pump off to get the tensoiner bit off.
Is the pump easy to replace ? Is there a knack to getting the tensioner bit off?
And any pictures about of how the belt goes around the pulley system?
any help and tips greatly appreciated. (apart from "get a haynes manual" - got one and still cant work it out :-) )
Thanks in advance Read more

They could just switch to the method used in many countries where you have your own personal plate(s)?.....
I am about to carry out an oil change, whilst I can find the drain plug, the oil filter is not too obvious.
Can anyone point me in the right direction and precise location.
Many thanks. Read more
Thank you for the info. Haynes it is.
Often when the weather is colder, but it seems to happen more and more; when coming up to stop, the revs fall lower than they should and the engine stalls. Annoying rather than dangerous, except when coming to a junction and wanting to move off with an approaching car bearing down on you. I am planning to replace the car with a Focus soon, but wondered if anyone else had this problem at all. Read more
Auto or manual? Have the wires on the power-steering pressure sensor broken?
Just passed a newly-ploughed field, and very nice it looked, too, in an earthy sort of way.
Got me wondering what vehicle could drive across it?
Bear in mind the furrows (agricultural term, that) were quite deep and the sods (another one) were quite large.
I reckon anything short of an agricultural tractor would struggle.
Land Rover with chunky tyres, perhaps? Read more
If you drove a Golf, or any other car across a ploughed field, you would come to a quick stop. It wouldn't do much good to your car either.
If the field had been ploughed and harrowed and was dry, you could probably drive a car across. If the soil was wet you would bog down and get stuck.
It's the first time on HJ that we have had a farming question, I am glad to help!
Hi
Friend of mine has been having some Problems with her Car. Hyundia Accent 1.3
This Started early last year when the Engine Management Light came on.
Car was running a bit erratically had it diagnosed as an Exhaust Problem garage fixed it light went out for a Couple of days came back on.
Car was running but not great on acceleration. Start of this year Car went in for an MOT & Service came back running worse than ever. Then the Battery Died.
This is where it gets interesting. We replaced the Battery which was about 3 years old at that time with a New one from Halfords. Car was OK for about 2 Days then started having real problems sounded like it was running on only 3 Cylindes or less.
Had it taken to the Garage they diagnosed the Coil Pack new one fitted. Car running fine
next day battery flat as a Pancake. Jump satrted it ran for about three hundred yards started to lose Power Rev Counter not working nor the indicators or clock eventually conked out. Put a Spare battery on everything fine. Drove it this morning no problem
this afternoon DEAD..
So the question waht is killing the Batteries ?
Any help would be gratefully appreciated.
Regards
Ian.H

If the battery isnt getting charged, so the engine is running off the battery it wont last long at all.
Could be othre problems but that needs checking 1st
I notice that my present car , an Audi A3 , demonstrates, depending on road surface, highly variable road noise levels. Tyres are :Dunlop SP Sportmax 225/45 ZR17 (standard suspension).
They are quiet(ish) on smooth roads but are very noisy on some B roads. I have never noticed such variation in any other car and having driven many car/tyre combinations (I am an old git ) would like to know of other people's experiences. Read more
Mine has Pirelli P Zero Rosso - same size. As you have identified road noise is more related to the surface then the tyre. On motorways with porous tarmac very little road noise, on other surfaces there is more noise, concrete motorways being the worst.
MG ZTT 135 2.0litre diesel 2003 bought in January2004. At 3weeks old cut out after 250 mile journey at approx 60 mph very frightening for lady concerned! Only the start of the problem though. Sat in main dealers awaiting repair for 2 weeks returned to us with no explanation other than a fuel problem done under warranty. Six months later cut out again whilst in the outside lane of the M6 doing 70 mph having already done a journey of 140 miles half an hour later it righted itself and started.Very frightening again for lady driving it ! Ran for three more days perfectly, enabling us to journey into France,Where the same thing happened, all power lost at speed. Transported to main dealer near Caen Waited 2 hours for someone to look at it by which time it started no trouble and we continued on our way,yet again!By this time beginning to loose all faith in the car but felt unable to change it due to the Rover bankruptcy and the huge loss we could ill afford to incur.Since then we have had another loss of power at high speed in the outside lane of the M25, rescued, another episode whilst towing a caravan, middle lane of the M25,each time taken to main dealers in the local area by breakdown company and supposedly repaired either by fitting new fuel lifter pump.Had all work done last year in france again when it failed again after running perfectly for 12 months. Ran for 12 months and has now done the same thing and needs another pump we have been told.We have done 34000 miles and wonder if this really is a fuel pump problem or could it be electronic/electrical.

Dave - this problem only affects the petrol models, they have a different type fuel pump to the diesels.
Raybee - If the pump in the tank has failed or has been running weak, this causes the lift pump under the bonnet next to the battery to have to work harder, this causes it to eventually fail, which is a poosible problem with your car
hi i have a Peugeot 307 hdi 51 plate. i have been having problems with it no power and then eventually gave up on me in January. had it in at a peugeot garage and can only find a fault on the fuel pump. since then i have sent my ecu away and that has come back fine. hubby plugged ecu back in and now the car is running but it has all lights on dash board such as air bag fault,, anti pollution etc etc etc i do not dare take it anywhere just incase it conks again do i need to get the system set to remove these lights or do you have any idea of anything else thanks

Tell your hubby to leave well alone - he's stomping about in a minefield and causing havoc. Sorting that mess out will be bad enough - and then there's still the original fault to address.
Diagnosing any HDi needs many thousands of pounds worth of kit wielded by an experienced diagnostics expert who fully understands their fearsome complexity.
If your dealer hasn't got anyone that can get their head around them; then find a good Peugeot independent or a diesel specialist.
My car has been making a sort of scraping sound at low speed as if the pads needed replacing. I had all the pads replaced (these needed doing anyway), got the front wishbones replaced as they were about to drop off. However the problem still persists and is getting worse.
The problem is very noticeable at low speeds it is almost a grinding sound, it is not the brakes.
My mechanic has heared but sods law meant that it wasn't evident then!. He suggested it could be to with the gearbox but it dosn't really seem to be any specific gear and its only low speed.
I am thinking drive shaft or gearbox problem? Any ideas? The car is driving normally. Read more
Idler gear rattle-but that is not what the OP was talking about.
You may "not be much of a poster", but at least you got the basic information into the subject which seems to challenge even the old hands here. Welcome !
