Hi all, first post here!

I'm looking to buy a 2nd-hand gearbox to replace my failed one, however, if a problem arises, I don't want to be caught between the supplier and the mechanic both pointing the finger at each other. I definitely don't want to go down the 1st-hand route as that'll cost double.

Anyone know what I need to look out for in a 2nd-hand box/supplier? Just how often do problems arise with them? All knowledgeable replies welcome.

Thanks,

JB

agreed.

I;m not totally clear what you have - Im assuming a saab 96? despite the 900 header.

If you are going to go to the labour cost of replacing the box then I would be looking at anything else that has to be disturbed and thinking about the age of the car and the cost of replacing it now as opposed to in a year or whatever.

Gearbox linkage would be one thing - or do I misremember that there is a weak point on the reverse selection on these due to linkage wear?

Hi,

Over the last two weeks I have noticed a what can only be described as a mild boingy noise (like a springy type noise) when putting full right lock on and also on the rerurn to centre. You can also feel the "twangs" through the contols. It apears to be coming from the drivers side spring mount under the bonnet. You dont her or feel it at speed just close manouvering as it only happens at more than 50% full lock on right.

Any ideas what it may be . new coil spring, or maybe needs tightenting??

It doent feel like somethings loose and drives as normal it is just the noise. I will get checked but want to have a idea mysef what it is?

If a replacement is immenent, is it wise to get both sides done?

it's possibly the suspension spring moving on the strut, likely due to a failed rubber component (which if any depends on saab setup)

A local rag reported that a Mercedes CLK collided with a tree. The driver, male, was unable to climb out. He was dressed as a gladiator in a red skirt, armoured breastplate and sandals. A passing taxi driver stopped and pulled free the driver just before the tyres of the Mercedes exploded, setting fire to the trees above. The gladiator then left the scene aided by three other males in a minibus. The next time the gladiator was seen he was in the hospital A&E accompanied by another male dressed as Superman. In a recent court case the defence lawyer, female, said that it was doubtful that the gladiator was driving the CLK.
Two questions
1. Who was driving it ?
2 Why am I never invited to parties ??

This must be a fabrication by the gutter press. Such things could not happen in Prestbury, surely. ;}

A friend has recently been refused purchase of a single tyre (puncture damged) when he took the 'spare' tyre to a tyre outlet. They were insistent that he could only buy a 'pair' for a single axle. His french is adequate, and no amount of discussion would allow the purchase!

This is similar to a recent thread of an exeprience of somebody in Eire, but I dont think it was ever fully resolve as to whether this is a legal requirement or a marketing sales opportunity.

Interesting situation if you are in the habit of swapping tyres around, and have a car with a 4 good legal and matched tyres and the spare is requiring replacemnet for whatever reason.

"The spare was a skinny so could not be used as a replacement."

Which is why I stayed in a skinny spare on the Mondeo - I know the lease company game. if my car I'd not want a space saver.

"When I asked them for a letter to accept responsibility in respect of any incident or accident affected by the different tyre makes on the same axle.."

Exactly what I did and they backed down almost immediately.

I have a friend who has spotted a privately listed Mercedes A-Class in Autotrader. It is about £2K under the Glass's website's guide price (adjusted for mileage) which would make me walk away. I don't want to post the ad because it might be completely genuine but the basic details are that the car is coming up to its 3rd birthday but has the mileage you might expect on its 10th birthday. It?s has full MB service history.

I?ve told the friend to contact the dealer who carried out the servicing and, when they look at the car tonight, to note the VIN on the body and the engine (any pointers to where these might be on an A-Class?) to make sure everything ties up before doing an HPI check. Am I too suspicious? Is there anything else they can do to make sure my suspicions are unfounded?

Why does the noisyness of diesel vehicles vary so much for identical makes/models.
Some cars are quiet and subdued at tickover whilst other examples of an identical car can have a sharp percussive clattery sound to them.
Any views, driving style, fuel brand etc ????? Read more

Oh forgot to add, the engine is much less grumpy below 1.5k rpm when on Shell too, unlike Esso.
