April 2008
We've had a AA Warranty on our car since we purchased since 2002. We have recently sold the car. I telephoned the AA to cancel and because it was least renewed in March 2007 and we made a claim shortly after we have to pay the installments to March 2009!
In the terms and conditions that were sent to use when the policy was renewed it states
You may cancel this Insurance within 14 days of the conclusion date and obtain a full refund by contacting our Customer Services Department. If We have made a claim payment to You or on Your behalf during this time, You will have to return the money to Us. After 14 days You may cancel Your Insurance but no refund of premium is available.
I believe the conclusion date is 14 days after the commencement date.
On the website the TOC has now changed to
You may cancel this Insurance within 14 days of the Issue Date and obtain a full refund by contacting our Customer Services Department. If We have made a claim payment to You or on Your behalf during this time, You will have to return the money to Us. After 14 days You may cancel Your Insurance but no refund of premium is available and any outstanding premium instalments must be paid to Us in full.
However we were not informed of this change to the terms and conditions
Can anyone explain if we are covered by the new terms and conditions, even if we weren't informed of them?
Regards
Gary H

I have a Renault 1.9 dci Scenic Expression Y reg ? water pump has just gone ? was only replaced 9 months ago ? done 6 000 miles in that time.. They are replacing pump / timing belt under parts warranty but are telling me that the thermostat breaking would cause water pump to go. Is this correct?

Only if it failed closed, pressurized the system and blew the seals out of the pump.
I was playing around with the Volvo at the weekend, and noticed that when I switch the rear fogs on, I get a "Bulb failure Fog Light" message on the panel. Checking around the back, I found I only have one rear fog light working (offside).
I popped into Halfords last night and picked up a replacement bulb. On popping the bulb cluster off the back of the nearside light, I was surprised to find the foglight bulb missing. I fitted a new bulb, left the bulb holder loose, and switched on. Sure enough, the new bulb lights up, and goes off when I turn off the fog lights. Perfect - two working foglights, and it's cleared the bulb failure warning on the panel. Great.
On attempting to refit the bulb cluster, I found that the hole where the new foglight bulb would poke through into the light cluster itself is blanked off, making it impossible to refit the cluster with the new bulb in place. This certainly explains why there was no bulb present.
The blanking plate in the light cluster is plastic with a perforated edge, so it shouldn't be too hard to pop out. Any idea why this light is left out, and would I be doing any harm "re-enabling" it? Also I'm curious why not having the bulb there should trigger a bulb failure warning, when it's clear this is how the car left the factory. It also seems odd not only having the bulb holder for the nearside fog light in place, but wired up and live.
Any ideas?

Thanks all. I'll pop the plastic blank out and put the bulb in. I just wanted to make sure that it wasn't going to cause any problems further down the line.
I can't say the eccentric linkage-d LHD wipers on the Scenic give me any problems at all (apart from as a matter of principle). I'm 6ft 2 and don't notice a blind spot. We once owned an early mk2 Golf on a B plate which had standard LHD wipers though, and that was a big problem.

While looking at the private adds on Autotrader for a Cooper S I was struck by one advertised for £4801, it being a 2003 with 30k miles and supposedly in excellent condition. It turned out that the seller had bought the car in the UK but was now selling it from Switzerland. The price was low I was told because the owner had tried to sell it to Swiss dealers but they were not interested in it because it was RHD. I was further told that the owner would go halves on the shipping and insurance charge, this being about £600. The payment method I found puzzling. It was suggested to me I should use eBay's Protected Payment system which I was told would involve sending the payment to Ebay, who would then hold this until the car arrived at my address with the full logbook etc. Only after I was fully satisfied with the car would I then instruct eBay to make payment to the seller. I am registered with eBay but was only aware of the PayPal method.
I would welcome further comments Read more
I dont mean to sound rude but anyone who expresses even the vaguest interest in this sort of clap trap deserves to lose their money to these scammers.
If they are that dim but dont do a deal on this scam they will without doubt plunder their money into something equally as phoney very soon

Watched this last night. I was already going to the 3rd lane when overtaking HGV's anyway (foreign or not) after seeing a car get side swiped some years ago by an HGV.
This is even more reason to do so.

Followed a convoy of non-UK trucks for over an hour today on Welsh twisty roads. Too closely bunched to allow a safe overtake....well in my car anyway......needs the elastic fully wound to contemplate anything as rash as taking three in one go. Had a look a few times but decided to be patient for a number of reasons.....
1/ they were all LHD which scares me
2/ they were tight up against one another
3/ my car when fully laden is fairly slow
4/ scameras everywhere so couldn't risk "slingshot" overtake.
upshot......late again but alive !
PS - no sign of uniformed persons lurking in any form of farm transport with a camera, much to my disappointment. ;-)
Is this for real or an April fools?

Let's see, it's now April and Richard Brunstrom is behind it, so that's all the boxes ticked for tha latter option even if it's not a windup.

Hi eveyone, I've just bought a 2001 mondeo 2.0 TDDI LX privately and last night it literally died on the A1! The diesel gauge still showed plenty but the car just lost power, stopped and won't start again. I put more diesel in just incase and checked its still coming through the injectors, but still nothing, anyone have any ideas whats wrong??? Read more

I saw that BMW ad in the Times yesterday, and couldn't work out which was the April Fool - The dog wee bit, or the shape of that new BMW (X6?).
Goodness me, that is one hideous car!!
My Mondeo TDCi has been pretty reliable, once the Ford people had sorted out the usual camshaft position sensor trouble and had dealt with an auxiliary belt tensioner that has broken up at 32k miles. It was nippy enough, too, for a 2-litre diesel, averaged 45 mpg and had a decent (Zetec) spec.
But...
1) I was getting increasingly fed up with it sounding more and more like a tractor (it never actually went wrong but had a knack of sounding like it was about to);
2) I was also conscious that through a change of role at work I was no longer doing regular, lengthy motorway trips, and now that B Jr. has minimal need for his pushchair the only thing that went it that huge boot most of the time was the shopping;
3) I was using this big ol' car just to drive by myself to work and back, 60 miles a day on country roads which have never been where it gave its best economy;
4) I was bored of being "family hatchback man".
So at the weekend I went to see my friendly Fiat dealer (hats off to PDH in Hassocks) who sorted me out with a pre-reg Panda 100HP (57 plate) in New Orleans blue metallic.
Am I mad? Probably.
Do I like it? Ohhhhhh yes. It reminds me in all the good ways of my '00 V-reg Mk II Punto Sporting - but with more poke, way better brakes and even sharper handling.
I didn't think in this day and age any car could put a silly grin on my face just driving to work and back, but this one does.
That is all :-)

I think you've cracked it. I've been vaguely looking at a Panda for ages (along with lots of other cars). The sort of mini Range Rover look works really well and the thought of one that could go side-ways at highish speed did make me think. Mrs O, however, has used her casting vote to say that we need something bigger for long journeys than a Panda or her Micra so I'm keeping my Almera for the time being. Unless James May wants it.
Ive been quoted for a used car from a main dealership a price 'excluding road tax' - is this a sly negotiating tactic by the salesman or is it customary for tax to be added on to the cost of the vehicle?
If the latter, do you usually get a years tax thrown in when you buy a used vehicle?
Thanks Read more
Common practice, unless the vehicle has just come in, they (or the previous owner) take they tax off and claim a refund.
When part-exchanging, it is common practice to keep the tax disc of the car your bringing in for a refund, and pay the sales dept for new tax on car you are buying(if you give them a copy of your insurance certificate or they arrange for temp insurance).
Otherwise make it clear that you want to negotiate an on the road, drive away price taxed and tested.
You are not covered by any new terms or conditions of contract that you have read somewhere else, only the T&C that you have been supplied with by the contracting company.
Although I cannot see the difference between the two you stated above except that you would have to pay outstanding payments if they imposed the new T&C on you.
As I see it, basically both say you can change your mind and cancel the insurance within 14 days of taking it out and get your money back, unless you've made a claim during the 14 day period. The second T&C adds that if you are paying by installments (e.g. monthy) then you have to pay any outstanding payments to the end of the term, which is the same as saying no money returned if you had paid in full rather than in installments.
I can't understand why you have to pay the installments until March 2009 though, was this a condition of making a claim ? or is the term of the insurance 2 years ?
