Road tax on used vehicle - bartsimpson
Ive been quoted for a used car from a main dealership a price 'excluding road tax' - is this a sly negotiating tactic by the salesman or is it customary for tax to be added on to the cost of the vehicle?

If the latter, do you usually get a years tax thrown in when you buy a used vehicle?

Thanks

It depends , not for a £500 p/x clearance , possibly yes for a £20 k motor under warantee , though dealers will try and avoid the expense if possible .

They generally exclude Road Tax so as not to be liable for VAT if the cost (for which you've agreed to pay) is included in the sale. If they agree to pay for it, then they tend not to show that on the invoice so as not to incur VAT on that portion.

They used to add on cost of number plates as well.

They will generally do as much as possible to reduce the price they quote to you because they expect everyone to be comparing quoted prices. So expect to pay for all the extras at some other point.

Common practice, unless the vehicle has just come in, they (or the previous owner) take they tax off and claim a refund.
When part-exchanging, it is common practice to keep the tax disc of the car your bringing in for a refund, and pay the sales dept for new tax on car you are buying(if you give them a copy of your insurance certificate or they arrange for temp insurance).
Otherwise make it clear that you want to negotiate an on the road, drive away price taxed and tested.
