They might not use as much fuel from the fuel tank, but they'll need the power station to use more fuel. You don't get owt for nowt.

...and of course the electricity will have been generated by power stations fuelled by coal supplied by US mines which largely defeats the purpose.

and when everyone has bought into the idea of having a plug in car they will invent a special tax or bump up the price of all domestic kwh usage to cover the massive carbon footprint being created by the fossil fueled power stations

This isn't true. With the typical European mix of power generation a plug-in car will emit around 1/4 of the CO2 of a car with its own prime mover. Power stations are relatively efficient - and this is kind of obvious because if it weren't the case we'd all have diesel generators at home for power generation instead of taking power from the grid.
If someone charges the plug-in car from 100% renewable sources (I buy my electricity from Good Energy - 100% wind farm) then the emissions are zero.

Featuring tremendous improvements to driving range, power, weight and efficiency ? and boasting a low-slung, dynamic and sophisticated appearance, previously unachievable in a fuel cell vehicle ? the FCX Clarity marks the significant progress Honda continues to make in advancing the real-world performance and appeal of the hydrogen-powered fuel cell car.

Plug in/electric cars will be the savvier of our national grid within the next few decades.
Recharged over night and providing local power in peak periods, a kind of power buffering service.

And the government will have to find some other way to tax them, which is why they're still desperate for road pricing.

Honda certified their Stratified combustion vehicle with the EPA in California for many years and advertized that fact. What they did not advertize was the fact they were not offered for sale to the public.
