Last time I was booked for speeding ( a few MPH over thirty on a newly restricted road between villages about 8 yrs ago) I sat in the car, was cautioned and given the lecture which I took `respectfully`.
There was a visible relaxation in the officers as I was then allowed to speak and was, in effect unchallenging and apologetic.
Some conversation followed, but as I was about to leave the car ( this is the point of the post) then I was asked a very oblique, well crafted semi question, which if discussed would have revealed that i was no `virgin` in the past speeding dept.
So what was that about with the formal interview over and some light hearted chat from the officers after that.
I knew I was still under caution though and said nothing and it was not persued.
It felt like a well oiled trap to get me to say I had been there before, but surely not?

Not sure that they were trying to get you to admit anything Oilrag, or at least i hope they weren't.
Some years ago 3 of us as usual cruising down M1 at the usual 70 (3 trucks i should add), couldn't go much faster cos of cars in the way.....
I'm at the rear of our well spaced convoy, got pulled by the b i b, and given a very salty rollicking and told to pass it on to my mates in front, immediately followed by amusing banter and well wishes.
I hope i too come over as reasonable, apart from the odd instance i've always found the b i b to be perfectly reasonable, and they like most of us respond to being treated with a little respect.
Are you now going to spill the beans over your chequered past? That should keep us occupied for some time methinks.
All the best.

Its either 3 or 4 Gordonbennet, not sure.. over 40 years or so. All back in the 70`s apart from the last one, where a 60 limit road between villages was `lamp posted` and went down to 30. Never been let off despite respect and politeness ;)
Actually, just remembering one as typing. Early 70`s bought a scooter (Vespa 200) and went on a scooter rally to york. Got `picked out` of a line of cars doing 40 just before the zone increased from 30mph.
There was seemingly a crackdown on the rally by the authorities and it taught me a valuable lesson in conforming to societies norms.
Of course now I`m retired there are no real constraints and I`m not far from running a Harley though Leeds centre at night on open pipes...
Well.. At least mentally, I feel the cold these days ;)

The most common 'trap' laid out by the officer who has pulled you over is to exaggerate the amount that you were over the speed limit...."Sir, do you you realise you were doing 60mph in a 30mph zone?"
Typical response, being a mixture between fear and honesty, would be "Sorry officer, It was no where near 60mph, it was more like 40mph!"
That admission is all the officer needs.

Paranoia! If you are going to get nicked you will get nicked. The evidence in respect of speeding is either there or not.
One area where you could talk yourself into a prosecution is mobile phone use. A bobby might see you and be almost convinced that you were using the phone. On being stopped an admittance could seal your fate whereas a denial could elicit some form of "Well I'm almost certain you where but will give you the benefit of the doubt."
What you do not know is the 100% certainty of the bobby and what they have seen before you start playing mind games.

I was stopped 4/500 yds after a road junction and pulled over as I had run a red light. I had actually turned left at lights and got caught with my nose out in traffic and the lights changed/ After the "Green Man" changed I looked both ways and signed to the drivers on my right that I would come out - thereby clearing their route.
The Policeman and Van 2 behind thought differently. He was very polite, as was I, and he said he would issue me with a £60 fine & 3 points. At this I was amazed and horrified (clean licence & no points in 42 years) - I then remained calm and said that I would not be paying as I would plead not guilty and have my "day in court" or "fame for 15 minutes".
I agreed with him on the moving through red and he agreed with me that other drivers on my right were aware of what was going on and there was "no danger". I then said that what happened was an interpretation of the same story rather than a difference in what had happened.
I was then offered the £60 and 3 points again and then almost in the same breath he gave me a stern warning not to run redlights and let me go.
What was in my favour? Being polite and the thought of the PC having paperwork to fill in and a court appearance as one of the 2 police witnesses.
Nice bit about Scotland - you need 2 x police or 1 x police and AN Other witness as 1 Police word is no better than the citizen's.

That's something I didn't know. I bet you can't get a parking ticket through the post you know nothing about either. A more civilised place in some respects.

I was also recently stopped on the M53 for speeding, which I was. When I got into the patrol car I was asked why I thought I was stopped, " Speeding" was my reply, " How fast he quipped", Oh 85ish I replied. "Try 5mph short of a ban" was his retort, "yes your probably right" I returned.
BIB " Have you got a clean license"
ME " Yes"
BIB " Would you like to keep it that way"
Me " Yes please"
BIB " Off you go then, and thanks for stopping"
Me I could not reply to his last statement, I was somewhat supprised
