I have read of some autos, esp i x20 and Venga having 'flat spots'. What does this mean? Is it significant ?
Thanks for advice. Read more

Bromptonaut recently had a thread about being drunk (actually under the influence of drugs) whilst being in charge of a car. I fully accept that the person (not Bromptonaut) was not going to drive but that is not the offence. The matter was not pursued although he was in the front seat whereas many drivers have been done for taking a nap in the back seat in the pub car park.
I have always wondered what “in charge” actually means.... Read more
Fair point. Did you see the top gear one, the locks and unlocks automatucally within a certain distance of the car, hell if you like to double check by trying the doors
Remember - Top Gear is an entertainment programme. They will ham things up if they think they are amusing. However ......
Be very careful if you go to get a crit-air sticker, like the british gov sites, there are some convincing copies, one of which charges 29.75 euros.. (for 4.8 euro sticker..)
One in bristol.. 45 euros... Read more
Merci. Très gentil à vous.
Tackles the task of cleaning the back of the car with 2 under 6’s who spend their time in the back. Cleaned most f the stains although struggling to get the black plastics, on the back of the seats free from mid? Anyone used any recents products for hard plastics? Read more
Dogs being sick on interior plastics etches into the plastic. When the plastic is dry you can hardly notice it.
When its damp it really shows through. It also does the same on leather.
Suppose your car won't start without choke in current conditions (Imagine you don't have fuel injection, if that won't give you bad dreams)
Is it better to turn it over a bit first without using the choke, to build oil pressure, or just use the choke straight away?... Read more
V8 only I think (or at least that was specifically the context it was mentioned in). It was a forum post though so I can't be sure its true.
My choke operation doesn't actually involve fuel wash, because I recently replaced the (non-functional) original with a simple improvised device that uses butane. ...
We currently have one of these as a courtesy car.
Having owned an original B class for 5 years and 50,000 faultless miles I was interested in how this measures up.
Looks well with AMG alloys and lowered suspension.
Interior is a vast improvement in terms of quality. Attractive double stitching in red to black seats which are as expected very supportive.
Safety improved with various systems to try and save you from crashing it!
Engine more than capable, manual box very smooth, just as good as the old one.
56mpg today on a 120 mile trip in mainly country A roads.
However when looking at the equipment, for a £27,000 vehicle it is poor.
For that money you do not get the following which were standard on my old model SE.
Front fogs
Parking sensors (camera instead)
Self park
Auto dipping rear view mirror
Folding mirrors
I was also surprised it didn’t have:
DAB radio
Xenon headlights
Heating to the standard fit leather/alcantara seats
I mentioned the safety fitments. I’ve turned them all off. The autobraking was far too sensitive and I don’t want constant warnings about being too close to the vehicle in front, if a car pulls out in front of me I can hardly help it!
I didn’t like the the ‘ipad’ style screen when the car was launched and having tried to live with it its a pain.
Its position means the climate controls are now very low down behind the gearstick and the buttons are tiny.
Turning the screen off when it is dark to reduce glare means fiddling with the mouse controller far too much for my liking.
The mouse controller is where the handbrake would be, ideally placed to be caught by your arm when changing gear. If you have turned off the screen it turns back on again, so more fiddling to turn it off.
There are three ways to change from eco, comfort, sport modes. A button on the centre console, through the screen and through menus on the speedo binnacle using steerimg wheel buttons. All of them mean taking your eyes off the road for too long. To change from eco to sport on my Subaru I press a button on the steerimg wheel!
Electric handbrake is to the right of the dash and for some reason you press to activate and pull to release. Needing both hands to engage gear and release the handbrake is madness, it is not auto release when you engage the gear and start pulling away like the Jaguar and Audis I have driven.
The 18 inch wheels and sports suspension handle potholes quite well, but road noise is noticeable. Typical diesel rattle when ticking over, but fine once running.
Interior is all black, including headlining and its depressing. now the sandwich floor has gone it no longer has an MPV style higher seating position. Its an A class with a higher roof.
In short a vast improvement in terms of interior finish, refinement, but poorly equipped for such an expensive car and far too complicated to operate systems whilst driving.

Was reading a review on the new A class yesterday and It pains me to see how far Mercedes have fallen since the cast from granite 70’s and 80’s when quality was the number one priority. They’ve now started using the rather dated (launched 2003) Renault 1.5 DCi motor in the A180 diesel. Who would pay £20k upwards for a posh small hatch that’s using the engine from a fifteen year old Renault Megane? Fine in an £8-9k Dacia but a heavily overpriced premium hatchback... badge over brains.
Hi all has anyone ever experienced this?
Issued a penalty charge notice in the form of a ticket. However the driver was not aware of the ticket being placed on the car as was not on the vehicle when the car was retrieve. ... Read more
It's worth pointing out that in the case of Parking Eye vs. Beavis the amount in question was fixed at £85.
This was after an appeal to the Supreme Court, where it was decided that a clause in any parking contract demanding a charge for breaking its terms (and thus acting as a deterrent) would be acceptable if it ‘serves a legitimate purpose’ and is not ‘manifestly excessive’....
It looks good, really good and keeps all the practicality and space of its predecessor.
Excellent news that it will be offered in Multispace version in both a standard and long wheel base and a 7 seater version is being reintroduced after it was pulled as an option in the UK around the summer 2016.
And a new 1.5 Diesel engine, can’t wait to try it out.

Vauxhall demonstrators to arrive at dealerships in the next 2 weeks with a provisional plan for a launch event on the weekend of the 8th September.
Amazing how different road horns are from one car to another.
Both my previous cars have been Fords, and both had good, loud, non-embarrassing horns. Not often used, but on those few occasions I did so, never the sort of thing to make you crouch down in your seat, red faced. ... Read more
Honda’s all have weedy horns. Our 64 plate CRV sounds like Noddy’s car.
I did once fit dixi airhorns to an old Mondeo for a General Lee look banger challenge entry. Sounded great and would definitely suit a Honda Jazz.
Thanks for the helpful posts. I drove a 4 gear auto in the original A class. I liked it. As with many things, the variety on offer now confuses me. I like things simple.
The ix20 and Venga both appeal - just about right size and higher seating position. Would prefer auto but wonder if manual better, safer for driving. Not unduly concerned about m.p.g....
