Hi,have just bought Renault Megan 1.5 diesel 06.
Looking to get max mpg, averaging 58.
Selecting 6 gear at 30mph,revs just over 1000.
Do you think I'm gaining a bit more mpg at expense of potential clutch failure.
P.s any gradient down to 5 gear.
Your thoughts please. Read more

Skid pan I am a skin flint,I don't tend to spend much on cars 600 pound max ,but whilst your mpg figures are good,my old polo 1 litre ,I use to get 45mpg,without all the complexity, more to go wrong, bought car at 100 000, died at 175 000.

But the cars we had were far bigger and faster than a one litre Polo and would carry more people/luggage over great distances in comfort.

A modern small petrol city car will do way more than 45 mpg, its called progress.

Got a used kit the last time I was in the UK. I'd guess a lot of these are surplus due to the owners buying new un-maintainable cars.... Read more

It’s a flexible rod as you describe, the end that attaches to the plug lead has a male thread on it with a shaped bit below that would snap into a plug lead. The threaded bit accepts the screwed cap off an old plug from an MX5.

Thanks. Could be I just didn't push it hard enough. Can't remember.

I'll try it again, but PM 2.5 Air Quality Index is over 150 right now and I don't have a very good mask, so I'll leave it until the air clears a bit.

The video was taken 19 05 2014 according to the screen. It was definitely not taken late in the year, the grass at the side of the road is freshly cut and the trees are in full leaf.

Someone needs to get their facts correct.

That means the car was MOT'd and taxed at the time of the accident.

That does not mean that the driver was not a total lunatic but whoever writes this stuff needs to check their facts first.

Brilliant presenter :-) !! The review was informative and very funny ! Thanks so much for that ! Off to SEAT now.... Read more

Bought one of these, delivery in a few months.
I’m really liking the idea of a two tone paint job, plus 1.0 auto. Petrol.
Would have preferred an electric, but the joke of a local council have no inclination to put electric charge points nearby, so gone with the next best thing.

My 120k miles Fiesta has just started showing signs of clutch failure.

I first noticed a rotational rattling noise whilst waiting at a junction with the clutch depressed yesterday. Gear selection has become more difficult (but still fine with the engine off). No unusual noises with the engine running in neutral with the clutch up.... Read more

Is that clutch hydraulic or cable actuated?

If its cable it might just need adjusting.

Anyone else tried pressing it while the car is still moving? I had a renault scenic hire car some time back, thought I'd give it a go on an empty road at about 15mph. It braked as though an elephant had left foot braked!

If you have, are all these systems the same? Read more

The problem with using an EPB to stop the car is that it's basically on or off, there is no feeling the handbrake and applying steadily to the point of locking and holding it there, and we all know what happens when the rear wheels lock solid.

As i haven't tried such an experiment (and have no wish to own such a contraption either) i don't know if the ABS or stabilty control has any input on parking brake application pressure, something i doubt because the application time as the motor(s) pull the brake pads in wouldn't, i imagine, be fast enough reacting.

Regarding people having to place there remote key in a faraday bag to avoid toerags boosting the sensor, I have a Lexus, if having locked your car you hold down the lock button and press the unlock button twice, it disable the fob and the vehicle can't be opened, pressing any button reactivated the remote. I'll also stake my claim for a uniquely feeble horn. As mentioned on another thread, mine is so pathetic that it would struggle to shake the cups at a Liliuptian tea party.

However, the thing I'm so far most proud of on my Jazz is the secret compartment under the back seat. Lift the seat in magic mode, turn two buttons and there's a place big enough to take an A4 jiffy bag. No room to put anything IN the jiffy bag, but beside the point....

Scandanavian's do usually have good taste in colour and design, but unless you were reading a Scandanavian motoring magazine at the time, the XC40 in question probably wasn't specced by a Scandanavian. And unfortunately car manufacturers have to cater for people with bad taste as well as good!

Re Piano Black, I blame Apple and most smartphone manufacturers for that fashion, though you are right it's not ideal, even on phones, but you can buy cases to help there.

We all welcome safety improvements. I notice an increasing number of cars with collision avoidance automatic braking of the car if a crash is likely.

The theory seems excellent. But what happens after a few years to its reliability ? How do garages check it's state ? Are some makers better than others ? Any data on accidents caused by malfunction ? Is it just one more thing which needs expensive maintenance ? Interestred in all views. Read more

BUT what if brakes are applied wrongly ? Could cause a serious collision and I expect responsibility will be with the driver.

Spot on Scot, hence the reams of small print above explaining what the driver should be aware of why the system might not function as expected, putting the onus on said driver, the buck stops with the person behind the wheel and it always will, you can guarantee there's a legal get out clause somewhere transferring full responsibility to the driver whatever the system does....
