Hi All, i was hoping someone could help me out with a dilemma please?

I am looking into getting a BMW 1 Series for my every day car and i do around 1000 miles a month. I usually keep cars for at least 5 years before thinking about getting a replacement.... Read more

My main reason of going for bmw is i am a software developer and the bmw platform is very coder friendly so i plan on tinkering with that side of things, i am a nerd :)

Are you saying that you want (and more to the point, allowed) to connect a computer and tinker with the iDrive system? That will just cause all sorts of headaches when it comes to servicing, repairs and insurance.

What exactly do you want to do? I work in IT myself and can handle techno-babble....

Had the shock of my life when going to view cars for the first time in many years today.
Apparently you don't get a spare wheel anymore, just an 'inflation kit' !!
Now I feel old !!

Ok, so I got over that shock, but then found myself totally bemused by how that played out in the boot compartment.
I was veiwing a 2015 Vauxhaull Astra Estate; at 'AvalailbleCar' of all places - what can I say, it was convenient.

Anyway, on opening the luggage compartment, you get the usual 'false floor' under which the spare wheel is, sorry 'was'. Now this floor was almost an inch thick in itself. Under there, there was almost 2 inches of ... erm .. nothing !!Basically a space an inch or two narrower than the width/length of the false floor itself ans 1-2 innches deep.
And then beyond the nothing, the huge great casm where the spare weel used to be.

Can anyone explain any of this ? I simply cannot understand why so much potential 'space' has been wasted.
I mean, I can almost understand the fact that they have left the well for the spare wheel (almost). But really don't understand why the false floor does not sit directly on top of that, but instead floats an inch or two above. And why the flas floor so thick ?

If you could drop that flase floor, by bike would go in the back almost without having to take the fron wheel off !!

Is anyone running a Megane MK4? I am thinking of one but don't see many about despite having three main dealers within ten mile radius. The engine I've seen is the 1.3 tce, as I only do 3000 miles a year the diesel makes no sense. I am slightly concerned about this modern trend for small highly-stressed engines, the 1.3 kicks out 130bhp but I expect you have to wring its neck to get that. I have not driven it yet, I admit.

I would rather have a larger lazy engine, such as the marvellous 2.0 petrol that was fitted to the 18 GTX we ran years ago. When we bought our Megane MK2 the petrol choice was 1.4, 1.6 and 2.0, likewise the Focus we also run had the choice of 1.4, 1.6 (two power outputs), 1.8, 2.0 and 2.5. It seems manufacturers are reducing the options for us! Read more

Hi My car is a Peugeot 307 1.4 petrol 2005 model with around 80k miles.

I will be driving steadily along at say 60mph all is well. Then, suddenly, the STOP light flashes and the temperature gauge rises to the red zone, its like that for like a second and then returns back to normal. I then stop the car, there is nothing actually wrong (i.e. not overheating, water fine, oil fine). Turn the ignition off, restart and the car is back to normal.

Then it can happen again, it is really sporadic as to when it happens, it can also happen at low speed too, but definitely no over heating.

The other issue is the heat blower inside the cabin does not provide heat anymore, it is very minimal.

So far I have had the temperature sensors replaced, engine temperature sensor, coolant temperature sensor and a replacement thermostat, none of this has resolve the issue, even my mechanic is puzzled.
Any ideas as what this could be?

thanks in advance for you help. Read more

Temperature sensors are pretty easy to change.

Take out the battery and its on the side of the engine, held in by a circlip....

I am just about to look for a second hand car 3 to 5 years old - probably a Toyota Avensis Estate 2.0D4D diesel. Would buying a car with a tow bar already fitted be a no-no for people, or just another variable to take into account? My concern would be that towing does put some extra stress on the engine/clutch and good maintenance and sensible driving are important.

Would people be happy if the service history was all up to date and there was no signs of any damage round the back end? Buying second hand always carries the risk of how good the previous driver(s) was (unless you are buying from the local vicar). I do want to have a tow bar, so buying a car with one already fitted will save money, but for the sake of £500 or so, I do wonder if this is a "risk" worth taking.... Read more

You have my great admiration, GWS. I'm only half-Scots and would have chosen the feeble option and used my car to pull the trailer. :)

But what about training as an HGV driver? There's a national shortage of around 45,000 drivers, and new rail freight terminals and warehousing complexes are being planned by developers, so no shortage of work.

Don't believe the hype, there's more than enough HGV licence holders to fulfil any shortfall, there is a shortage of skilled competent drivers and a shortage of those prepared to work for minimum wage, the only companies who can't attract or retain staff are those paying peanuts...you do not see quality jobs advertised and you never will.

True enough we continue to build ever more huge industrial areas, but these are almost entirely warehousing and associated support, built to store and distribute Chinese/Indian/third world made tat that lasts 5 minutes, and food processing plant (rural areas, not not the Cotswolds) to feed the unsustainably growing population.

A few weeks ago we had the fuel filter replaced and when the garage carried out a road test afterwards they noticed a vibration in the steering wheel when the wheel was turned left. Previously we had noticed this vibration but didn’t think it was anything of note. The garage believed it was power steering related and believed the power steering pump is failing because the rack seems fine. They quoted a repair cost of £1200 and we need to be confident this will resolve the problem. The current symptom is having no affect on driving and is only felt at less than 20 mph. We have looked at other forums related to failing power steering pumps and the vans symptoms don’t seem to match what others have experienced. We are equally unsure of the implications ignoring the vibration could have.

The van is a 14 plate,
101,000 on the odometer,

Any advise would be greatly appreciated,

Kind regards

Yes and also check the inner and outer CV joints, if a CV joint is running dry it doesn't necessarily have to be noisy with it.

My thanks to the three people who came back on this. Sorry had not realised it was a diesel otherwise would not have looked at it. My mistake.

I was attracted to it on the forecourt as it had a narrow body and a large amount of space in the back. Would get into my single garage. I would have used it for motorway journeys and local. ...

Hi all, so I recently purchased a Vauxhall insignia 1.8 2010. Really happy with it until error code 3 app reads on the dash (low coolant) I did a bit of research and found two common problem relating to this. One being a cracked header tank with I have replaced. The other is the egr/cooler. Which also could cause bad mpg. I’m currently getting 21 when google says I should be getting 37 I think.

My question is, do I have a egr? If so what’re the locations of it and the cooler?

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Read more
