Yes. This is just so obvious. Unfortunately Local Authorities (eg Gateshead, with the Whickham scheme) could not see this. Hopefully this report will help them to see what everybody else knows and understands, and that more intelligent, effective, approaches to reducing accidents will be now applied. Shame about the £gazillions wasted in the meantime though, not to mention the frustration to (normally) decent and law-abiding road users. Read more

In our area of Stockport 20mph speed limits have been set up on some roads and given cycle lanes. What amazes me about cyclists, most motorists drive considerately and give bicycles a wide birth. Unlike some cyclists I have seen this week riding through red lights, riding in the dark with no lights and not wearing any protective clothing eg, helmets and they are always bleating on about motorists, perhaps if they thought their lives were worth saving, they would abide by the law and spend a couple of bob on lights and helmets and maybe get some insurance.

Hi all is there anyone out there who has put a bike rack on the back of the XJ to transport 2 bikes. I know you can’t used a tow bar can’t put anything on the roof due to the glass roof. But I know there is the Sarius bones or such that strap to the boot.

Just wondering if anyone has done it or can suggest a method to carry the bikes with the Jag

Thanks All Read more

I'm getting a sense of de ja vu here, didn't this very question get asked a month or two ago?

You're correct badbusdriver. The OP asked about bike racks for the XJ X351 here:...

It's also quite interesting to see the connections between insurance companies e.g Churchill and Direct line both under the RBS umbrella - perhaps the reason why some companies can immediately offer a price comparison?

Well my question is what the subject says! Does the Nissan Note use a Renault catalytic converter?

Why am I asking? Well long story but... I suffer from chemical sensitivity meaning that I react very badly to various fumes that a normal person would not notice at all. And said fumes can be in tiny quantities and still 'do me in'.

So... that makes buying a used car problematic. In some cars I'm perfectly ok, in others quite the opposite. Sometimes i don't know what i'm reacting to but my repeated experience is that french cats are generally more smelly than others when the car is starting from cold, which of course I want to avoid, given my uber sensitivity to such stuff.

Now the Nissan Note could be a good car for me but i know Nissan have merged with Renault so I am wondering if the Note uses a french cat. Anyone know? Read more

fThank you for the replies. Much appreciated.

Earlier today I viewed/drove a Nissan Note that I'm interested in and there was no hint of CAT smell - even to my abnormally sensitive nose! So that's one box ticked. Thanks again.

As per previous comment you should never be able to smell what is coming out of your own car's exhaust unless you are driving backwards or you have a hatch seal leak. However you do smell the cars in front. I have an issue following some diesel engined cars that have a major Woodbine habit and get annoyed with people reporting that they have deleted their DPF. Hopefully the new MOT will get these cars off the road....

I’ve just spent the last week playing with the new Suzuki Jimny, and, I have to say, it’s brilliant off-road. Even on standard road/summer tyres, the traction is phenomenal - even when you think it won’t go any further, just hold a steady 1500/2000rpm and it’ll usually find grip by braking individual wheels.
Inside, it’s a big step forward from the previous car, with good connectivity, climate control, heated seats etc. The only thing I can’t comment upon is it’s on road performance, as I simply haven’t driven it far enough. After four days, my car has an average speed of 4mph! Read more

Re. NCAP - I could see why you might not want the electronic safety kit (ABS brakes and anti roll technology excepted) but to have a structure that deforms round the door pillars during testing seems so last century. The Austin/Rover Metro was bad for that sort of thing - but surely we've moved on since then?

As a fairly regular user of the M25, I wish there were more service stations on the western side. In a clockwise direction, there are none between Cobham and South Mimms. That is equivalent to numbers 7 and 12 on a clock face and it covers one of the busiest stretches where the M3, M4 and M40 all join. Unless you choose your time to travel, which as a retired person I am lucky to be able to do, covering that particular stretch can take some time as the variable speed limits are almost always in operation. Add an accident or breakdown into the mix and you can spend an hour or two waiting to get through.

I can’t be the only person who isn’t blessed with a camel bladder and some of the hold-ups I’ve been caught in have led to another type of near accident (if you know what I mean) whereas many people would crawl as far as the next service station if there were one and then turn off and give the hold-up a chance to clear.

Things are different in America, in the mid-west at least. There are service stations every few miles, or so it seems, and some are no more than a small car park and a toilet block, immaculately clean and with somebody always in attendance. I appreciate that large areas of the mid-west are undeveloped and there is plenty of room for rest areas. Contrast the area surrounding the M25 that I’m referring to: prime real estate in Surrey, Hampshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire. Either the landowners don’t want service stations on their estates or the price of the land rules out any developers’ interest. Whatever the reason, the need for additional service facilities can only increase as the traffic on the M25 increases.

I can’t speak for the eastern side of the M25 as I never use it, but I see from a possibly out of date road atlas that there are services at Thurrock and I know the Clackett Lane services as I pass them on my occasional visits to Kent. What seems odd by the way is how close the Clackett Lane and Cobham services are when the others are so spread out. Read more

Also it's a straightforward detour to get to Beaconsfield services on the M40 - at least it is after you've done it once!

The same service area serves both directions of the M40, so no problem getting back on the motorway to go back the way you came.

Are the early Zeta/Zetec engines found in the Mondeo and Escort, non-interference engines? Read more

Nope. But much confusion comes from the fact so many very different motors are badged as Zetec. The Mazda derived 1.8/2.0 in the Mk II Focus is non-interference but the Ford designed motor in the Mk I will be ruined.

Car is a 2003 Renault Scenic 1.4 Authentic (run out model of the original style Scenic). We had it from new and it gave great service with minimal problems. It was serviced by myself. When we pensioned it off last year after 14 years and 100K we sold it to a mate at my work who runs bangers. It's continued to give good service but now has a airbag light on. Codes are both DF040. One is Passenger lateral sensor circuit no communication and also Passenger lateral sensor circuit faulty.

They make sense and I want to have a go at fixing it for my mate. My questions are... Read more
