A close relative of mine has just purchased a brand new Mazda 6, 2.2 diesel. I haven't clapped eyes on it yet, but he hummed and haahed between the Mazda and a Jag XS, eventually going for the Mazda, I'd like to think, based on my advice regarding the reliability of the brand. Advice which, I hasten to admit, I accumulated not through personal experience, but through reading positive comment about Mazdas on here.

He's blissfully happy with it so far. He tends to hang onto his cars until way beyond the point where they're worth much, previous example being an 8 year old 2.2 petrol Vectra which had about 65k on the clock and which developed a fuel problem that nobody could get to the bottom of without spending more money than the the car was worth. So he traded it in for scrappage on the Mazda. ... Read more

Good advice as always.

And yes..having it from brand new, at least I know exactly how the 6 has been run and serviced so if it were treated poorly ,which it isn't, then tis nobody's fault but mine....

Hi all,

I have a 66 plate E class from new, i do mostly motorway miles and recently started getting a shuddering in the steering wheel when i braked, it didnt happen everytime i braked which i found unusual. There are currently 44,000miles on the clock and almost time for my third service.... Read more

As an update on my Apr 2018 post on my clearly better quality thirteen year old Audi A8 brakes, the slight judder on fast hard braking has disappeared. This is because while fitting new front pads last year to replace the well worn originals at 70,000 miles, I serviced the original discs.

With the three wheels on the ground chocked, I engaged the EPB and gently put into D. This caused the front disc to rotate (not possible on lesser MBs with only rear wheel drive). With a carborundum wheel drill attachment, I removed the lipping and also applied it to the polished working surface of the disc, working as evenly as possible with minimal pressure on the rotating disc, thus removing any visually undetectable irregular deposits from the old pads which can cause hot spots resulting in a different coefficient of friction in that area, sometimes erroneously described as 'warped discs' - which of course is nonsense....

First it was my farmer friends who told me that the engine in their 2012 TDV6 Discovery had blown.
They said the warning light for low oil flashed up but before they could do anything the engine had blown.
The car has an electronic dipstick and no manual check.
First of all the Main dealer quoted .15k for a new engine.
Searches for a second hand engine came to nothing so they got the engine rebuilt, which involves lifting the body off the chassis to access the power plant.
The cost was almost 10k

Now my neighbour who is LR mad has had the same thing happen to him and a question to HJ on this months HJ advice column confirms that there is a problem of excessive oil consumption with the Ford sourced engine.

As LR don't seem to be accepting any responsibility for this fault do you know of any class actions from unhappy customers.

But will nothing dampen these LR s fans enthusiasm ? My neighbour has already ordered a Defender !

It's body on frame, essentially a blank canvass built like mecchano! If Jeep can do it to the Wrangler, Mercedes to the G Wagon, Toyota the 70 series and Ford about to release a Bronco, there was no reason Land Rover couldn't keep the Defender going in its latest guise.

I heard that the Defender couldn't pass the latest crash safety regulations. I don't suppose the 70 series land cruiser would pass either even though as a vehicle it runs rings around the defender for build quality....

Looking ahead at the service schedule it says that the Timing Belt will need to be changed at 80K miles or 8 years.

My question is, does anybody know if it is a Chain or rubber compound belt.... Read more

The 2.0 is a belt and the newer 1.7 a chain. As said in the schedule it’s 8yrs or 80k.

Wrong.

The older 2.0 diesel fitted to the the earlier Tucsons, Sportage, Ceed (plus others no doubt) was a belt but when the new 2.0 CRDi Euro 5 compliant engines were introduced in early 2010 for the ix35 and Sportage (and no doubt others) like all recent Hyundai/Kia engines (inc the 1.7) it was fitted with a chain.

Was driving home and on the m1 somewhere between sheffield and leeds there has been roadworks going on, i seen a sign that i thought said 60, so i slowed down, then i got towards the boards and they actually said 50 as i seen a flash, however the flash came from infront of me somewhere i didnt see exacty, do the cameras on the m1 face forward aswell as backwards and therefore can catch you front facing? My speedo is out by 3 mph and i may not have been doing 60 bang on but rather 68(65). Read more

A local police force have confirmed in the press today that they have full control over the M1 smart motorway speed cameras in their Yorkshire patch.

If they need to set the camera to 'police' the 70 limit they will do.

I have a 2011 BMW 520D Touring which seems to be struggling with a DPF issue. Hoping to get some good advice here.

The car has done 118,000 miles. MPG is way down on previous models- 36mpg urban and 44mpg on motorways. ... Read more

I'd try getting it professionally cleaned before replacing it. It has to be removed from the car to do this.

It should be possible to tell if it's blocked by anaysing the pressure differential readings. ...

I bought a 2018 Polo a week or two ago. After five days the front wipers stopped in torrential rain on a dual carriageway. Five minutes earlier I was on the M3 and it would have been very dangerous had they failed then. I collected a loan car last Saturday and this evening on the way home from the ice rink the front wipers failed, then restarted but only on the slow speed. And the auto start failed. The car was the same apart from the colour and wheels. One such failure is not unreasonable given that faults do occur, but two in a short time scale on two different cars? It suggests the car has a systematic problem. Read more

I wouldn’t completely write off a 1.6 diesel Berlingo Multispace if you can find one with proven service history and get the seller to knock off the cost of an engine flush and new oil.

These engines must have regular oil changes at no more than 12,000 Miles or 1 year.

The 1.6 petrol in the Berlingo is okay but sluggish if you need to move, this makes driving the vehicle more of a chore.
The 1.2 putetech petrol is simply brilliant, loads of power, good fuel economy and pulls the Multispace well.

“If the vehicle has had the VW emissions fix in the last 2 years, VW should change it for free.”

They recently did with my 2012 Polo 1.2 TDi. Quite a big job and one I’m glad I didn’t have to pay for.
